I think they were heard muttering something about how their government union pensions weren’t paying them enough.

I agree. I mean these folks keeping the kettle are doing this for charity. I am not saying that stealing from non charity organization is any better, but stealing from a charity has to be the worst of the worst.

I wouldn’t be so quick to buy this story. we had a couple of incidents like this in Norfolk VA last year. Turned out that the reformed dopers the SA hired to ring their bells weren’t as reformed as they should have been and had staged their own robberies.

Either a big ass, or truly desperate.

If you were a bell ringer, and some destitute looking dude came up asking for help, what would you do — does the Salvation Army provide them with cards directing inquirers to their public assistance offices? Not that there’s any excuse for robbing, but still the question suggests itself.

Police Sgt. Frank Kemp tells WJW-TV (http://bit.ly/vPzm84) the four men, all wearing dark clothing and hoodies, threatened to use the knife.

Tall, short, young, old, white, black, fat, thin?

The police want information and this is what they post as a description?

Come on, man!

Hoodies is a good start on the identities. Interesting how “hood” is a root word.

Hey they’re the cops, they can be cagey (and when the city management wants, politically correct). I doubt this was a racially integrated team of hoodie wearing robbers, if you get my drift.

You don't give them money. You can't anyways, because the kettle is locked, but you don't give them money. Crackheads are notorious for coming up with convincing stories of woe.

I think that’s obvious, but you’d probably want to let them know where the Salvation Army office that does deal with such cases are. Anyhow this wasn’t a one man operation, from the report.

The Salvation has a problem getting volunteers to ring the bells, so are forced to hire people. Locally, I see the same FEW volunteers all the time. I also see these same people at nursing homes, and everywhere people need people. They are devoted, hardworking, God-loving people who deserve more support. I always help the Salvation Army when I can, not just at Christmas.

I usually ask these bell ringers if they are hungry (someone only comes around with food for them occasionally) and I will by them lunch or a dinner sandwich

The past two Decembers we’ve had the same kettle ringer at our grocery store. She stands outside and yes rings the bell, but she also belts out Christmas carols at the top of her lungs. Bless her though, she doesn’t carry a tune all that well, not so bad like the church pew behind you, but not choir bound either. It is a joyful noise.

I always bring her a fresh cup of hot coffee on my way out.

I stand behind the bell ringer, and when you deliver the food, I distract them and steal it.

I wait for you to do this. It's the only way I can eat.
