Rep King: House Won't Defund Obamacare Because Leaders ‘Afraid' GOP Will be Blamed for Shutdown
CNS News ^ | November 21, 2011 | Pete Winn

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) says that Congress is not going to cut off funding for Obamacare or Planned Parenthood because House Republican leadership is afraid of the threat of a showdown with Senate Democrats and the president – they’re afraid that Republicans would be blamed for a government shutdown.

King said the House GOP leadership, if asked, would say that they did pass a repeal of Obamacare – and would blame the Senate, which didn’t take up the measure.

But King also said House Republicans “didn’t use the leverage that we should have used.”

“We didn’t bring up the maximum leverage because the decision was made by leadership to avoid the prospect of a showdown with the president or Harry Reid that could result in a potential shutdown of government,” King told CNSNews.com in an interview.

“And that rationale – and it wasn’t my rationale – is what brings us to this point -- that we’re still funding Obamacare to the tune of $23.6 billion dollars in the first two years, we’re trying to find $1.2 trillion in cuts, there’s $1.379 trillion in cuts that are there automatically if we just cut off the existing programs within Obamacare and resolve the problem with the Super-committee,” he said.

Here's a bunch of things I'd cut...

This is why it's so hard to keep a republic, I suppose. At least Mussolini made the trains run on time. ;-)

Who elects the political leadership? In order to solve a problem, the root must be reasoned with.

In other words, you’d cut every program except the ones that provide benefits to you, is that about right??

As far as the GOP leadership, it's too late for them. I don't see any way they can redeem themselves. They fear the Rat leadership more than they fear their constituents. They need to be broomed.

Reread the first sentence of my post(Here's a bunch of things I'd cut before I'd cut military benefits and medicare)

Do you all have a problem with cutting the items on my list
or do you believe illegal aliens, foreigners, and the alphabet soup of regulatory agencies who bypass congress in regulating our lives have priority over retired military and those who had money confiscated as a condition of their employment with the promise of an annuity at retirement?

IMHO they fear the loss of their share of the booty.

This is why we must support Romney. We need his Churchillian Courage.\s

It’s time to take the first logical step; DEMAND BOEHNER STEP DOWN! This worthless crying incompetent has led the GOP House down this feckless road of compromise. Don’t forget, Boehner gave Obama another $2 Trillion in petty cash for nothing in return. We are funding Obamacare and Planned Parenthood, RIGHT NOW! Why aren’t Rush and the other conservative talking heads, calling for Boehner’s head to roll?

No, not at all. I got no problem with your choices. The point I was trying to make is that it’s easy to say I’d cut but difficult to say we’ll cut... that’s all. Sorry, didn’t mean to be mysterious.

(1) I have no problems with cutting all the things you mentioned.

(2) Cutting them all will postpone the Social Security/Medicare day of reckoning by a few years at best. What then??

(3) No one was "promised" an "annuity". Unless you believe Democrats, that is.

I wrote 'I'd', hoping others would agree with the choices. To me, 'we'd' would have been presumptuous.

Perhaps I should have been less cryptic. My point was there is an incredible amount of money that hopefully we'd agree to cut from the budget first, from places our 'illustrious' politicians never mention. In fact I would love to see Ron Pauls's proposed budget as a starting point for discussion.

Something tells me Paul would have lots of military cuts too. After all, you don’t need to prime the muskets until they come over the wall.

Here's Paul's summary chart:

As I said it would be a good place to start discussion.I haven't come by a better split out of his cuts. IIRC he would cut funds for 'nation building' over seas.

My list is derived from articles I started collecting and putting in a folder 'where our money goes' with a few of paul's recommendations re shutting down federal regulatory agencies.

Something to ponder... imagine you got your way and there were massive cuts. Unemployment would go through the roof as all these unemployed gov workers hit the street. The economy would sink, sink, sink until it reorganized and improved. But I don’t think the economy would be given enough time to heal on its own. Instead, we’d see another massive shift as the Democrats would be blaming the crappy economy on us “cutters” and they’d be right back in office “helping people” back into their government jobs. The American public isn’t going to suddenly get smarter and endure the pain. They are going to be pissed and vote for the next pretty face who is passing out candy. Cutting has to be gradual or it will be self-defeating.
