Skip to comments.Newt calls for ‘humane’ immigration policy

I do not believe that the people of the United States are going to take people who have been here a quarter century, who have children and grandchildren, who are members of the community, who may have done something 25 years ago, separate them from their families and expel them. Im prepared to take the heat for saying, lets be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families.
He added, I do believe if youve been here recently and have no ties to the U.S., we should deport you.
Newt did himself significant harm tonight on immigration among caucus and primary voters, tweeted Tim Albrecht, the spokesman for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R).
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called the proposal amnesty.

Leftist climate change and now this. Perry is much better than it guy. But Newt can yap.
Solve the problem make the illegals legal!!!.. /snark.. /snide.. /sarc..
Sarah should have got in the race.
When Newt steps in it, he really steps in it. Tonight he sounded like he was to the left of LaRaza Rick on this issue. I don’t know how someone living here illegally for 25 years is not breaking the law, but somehow in Newt’s mind it isn’t.
Perry = you have no heart.
Newt = you are not humane.
Bite me to both.
who may have done something 25 years ago,
Every second they stay here is a second that they continue to break the law. Newt, you are a moron. You and Obama should share the award for the most overated intellect. Newt needs to spend more time with his mistress and leave the country in more competent hands.
All he did was admit he has the same immigration policy as Herman Cain. Not really worth of the 50 threads it will warrant.,,,,,
Maybe it isn't too late. If voters can figure out how to spell Murkowski, Palin is a snap.
In spades! Will NOT vote for him.
Newt OTOH, watched as Perry torpedoed his campaign, yet he went on to make the same mistake!
Political suicide is political suicide, whether you're a sitting governor or a former speaker of the house.
Newt has more baggage (private and political) than the lost and found at United Airlines and both the left and right have just started sifting through it.
So what is he going to do about the border? I know people with relatives on the Mexican side of the border who refuse to cross the border to visit them in Mexico due to the violence. The violence is spilling over to the US side of the border.
This is sure to put a dent in the chameleons poll numbers.
Why would the so called conservative party want another rino in office anyway?
The serial adulterer stepped on a land mine tonight.
It's too late to appear on the ballot in several states including NH.
That is basically the same position that Sarah Palin had.
Let us all not forget ( and how easily some of the fickle FReepers do that ) that Sarah in her Univision interview that it’d “ not be humane” to deport all of the illegals.
Why can’t these guys HEAR us by now. Close down our borders FIRST, and then we’ll talk.
Sarah's position is pretty much identical to Newt's.
Even Sarah said it’d “not be humane” to deport them all.
What about a “Humane” jobs policy for the millions of legal, desperate, Americans who have lost their jobs and would do most of the jobs illegals now do, to keep their house, their car and put food on the table for their legal American families.
Would you be so kind to explain to me why Sarah didnt lose too much support when she said it’d “not be humane” to deport all illegals ?
And also why is everyone jumping on Newt for saying basically the same thing Sarah and others has said ?
Inhumane and heartless to treat foreign invaders on the dole like they are... foreign invaders on the dole... lol
Newt has said this before but it was mostly ignored. Apparently he thinks if you are sneaky enough to stay for that long, you deserve to stay. lol.
He once said “Some illegals deserve amnesty”... by being sneaky enough and living on the dole long enough I guess?
I consider Newt to be a political opportunist of the crassest kind, yet have no problem with his wording here. What? Are we saying this country does not have the resources to support hard working people who pay taxes?
This is an area where we need to be practical. Assess the illegals in terms of their devotion to country and understanding of our principles. Throw the moochers and Commies out.
It’s no easy feat to re-elect a president who has turned victory into a full-on retreat in Iraq and ushered in the worst economy in some 80 years, but the Republican candidates seem determined to accomplish it. Is this really the best the GOP can do?
Newt changes his stand depending on the political winds. He doesn’t really hide that fact either.
Didn’t take long for Newts true colors to come out.
Now does everyone remember why Newts rep went belly up? He is a RINO in Elephant Clothing.
Ask a Sarah supporter.
On June 1, 2011, Palin stated her opposition to the DREAM Act, a bill that would provide conditional permanent residency to certain illegal and deportable alien students who graduate from U.S. high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. legally or illegally as minors and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment: "The immigrants in the past, they had to literally and figuratively stand in line and follow rules to become U.S. citizens. I'd like to see that continue, but unfortunately, the Dream Act kind of usurps that, the system, that is a legal system, to make sure that immigrants who want to be here legally, working hard, producing and supplying revenue and resources for their family, that they're able to do that right and legally. Unfortunately, the DREAM act doesn't accomplish that."
Yes. But he still beats Obomney by a long shot.
Well somebody just handed newt some extra rope and he strung himself up. Dumb
No, it sure didn't. You have to wonder what he was thinking. Honesty is the best policy but torpedoing his campaign with what is known to be a 3rd rail issue -- not smart.
“He is a RINO in Elephant Clothing”. Add to that an old hack and serious gasbag.
How do we know that? Since Newt’s positions change with the circumstances how do we know he is (or will be if elected) really any better than Romney?
The FR circular firing squad continues,
We aren’t doing a thing. It has been the easiest primary ever. Perry, Newt, Paul, Huntsman pretty much killed themselves.
Cain, Bachmann and Santorum are hanging in their
Romney just taking up space. Biggest loser of all.
Cain SHOULD be our Nominee for President of the United States of America. Bachmann SHOULD be our Vice President of the United States of America.
Newt SHOULD be our Press Secretary for President Cain.
Perry SHOULD be our Secretary of Energy.....he wants to dissolve the department but maybe he can cut it by 80 percent and make it efficient.
Santorum SHOULD be Secretary of Education....Again he want to dissolve this department as well but maybe he can cut it down by 90 percent.
Ron Paul SHOULD be Treasury Secretary.
Newt stepped in it big time on amnesty and nearly called us heartless, like Perry, for not agreeing with him. I am sick and tired of being accused of not having compassion, because I dont believe in rewarding illegal activity. I’m with Cain. He gave the best and most straightforward and practical answer to this issue.
By the way, Gingrich won't be on the ballot in Missouri because he didn't file in time.
I really wish she had gotten in the race, but that said, while she did oppose the dream act, she wasn't exactly Tom Tancredo on illegal immigration.
In fact, I'm not totally convinced any of them are, I hate this, but I suspect they are all very soft on illegal immigration, only their rhetoric differs.
What makes this amusing is that we had the amnesty of 1986—exactly 25 years ago. The USG estimated that one million would apply, but the true number turned out to be 2.7 million. So Newt’s example of a family of illegals who have been here for 25 years demonstrates that amnesty doesn’t work. They arrived right after an amnesty.
Assess people who flaunt our laws by entering illegally? They also commit other crimes such as working illegally, ID theft, lying on employment applications, driving illegally, tax evasion, etc. These are not the people who should be rewarded with citizenship. We have over 4 million intending immigrants waiting their turn overseas to enter. They have filled out all the required paperwork, had background checks, and physical exams. What kind of message does this send to them? Does the Rule of Law mean anything?
