A president's most solemn duty is to protect America and her people -- a responsibility that, in a time of evolving security threats and unsustainable debt, will only grow harder for the next administration.
In the aftermath of the failure of the super committee, we are facing cuts in defense. Yet there has still been little discussion about overall defense spending priorities and how we must transform our defense infrastructure for the 21st century.
Some of my opponents suggest maintaining the status quo, thus avoiding the tough decisions. Others advocate retrenchment and isolationism through draconian across-the-board cuts, which brings greater

So many stories about Huntsman, is he the MSM darling now?
CNN especially loves the guy
Is there a reason for evaluating a 1 percenter?
With the proper make-up and lighting, he would make a great Dracula.
Jon Huntsman is not my preferred choice. However in his defense, he has done a very good job as governor of Utah, if past is any guide. At least he is not a constant flip flopper like Romney and Newt. He looks trustworthy to do what he says. Can’t say the same thing about Newt and especially Romney.
What exactly has been Huntsman’s stance on illegals?
Huh? I haven’t kept track of Obama’s love child’s doings on the campaign trail.
Excuse me!
Is he the extra spray on tan Democrat with the bright yellow ties who keeps crashing the GOP Debates?
I guess with RINOs Romney and Gingrich having problems with conservatives, some folks are shopping for the least objectionable RINO. For some, Huntsman more than fills that bill.
Huntsman is running for VP slot. He would be OK by me in that position but...I don’t know about him in the White House. he doesn’t get my heart to beating. He isn’t Reagan, nor Palin or even a good Dole.
It says something that people know his girls more than they know him.
Who cares what Huntsman says.. Those on “the View” may think he’s “deep”..
What was the trigger to explain the bounce on intrade? What did I miss?
Agreed on all your points.
Cut the number of warriors by 20% and the number of civilians by 5-7%. More dependence on the Guard and Reserves. Just a couple years ago they wanted to add troops to the Army.
I'm not buying any of this. If they want to cut the military they are just going to have to cut down the number of places we are fighting. It is pure and simple.
Even more critical is to stop nation building in foreign lands, using money borrowed from China. I can’t think of anything more foolhardy and dumb.
As far as I am concerned, Huntsman came up with one really good response in the last debate....we can’t implement sanctions, no-fly zones, etc. in Iran because China holds our debt. And China backs Iran. Even I, a private citizen that is not running for president, knows that.
Other than that, I don’t see his value.
Cutting our military is a very dangerous idea.
*chuckle*
Good point.
