Hispanic Activists Urge GOP To Follow Gingrich's Lead On Immigration

Hispanic Activists Urge GOP To Follow Gingrich's Lead On Immigration Newt Gingrich's call for 'humane' approach to migrants earns plaudits from Latino voters – but propels the former speaker into an increasingly hostile debate within the Republican party

Ed Pilkington 23 November

Newt Gingrich's appeal for a "humane" approach to US immigration in the latest televised debate has propelled him into the thick of one of the most bitterly divisive issues within the Republican party, at the same time earning him plaudits from Hispanic activists battling against new legal clampdowns sweeping across the southern states.

Latino groups in Alabama and Arizona, where some of the harshest anti-immigration laws have been passed in recent months, welcomed Gingrich's comments as a sign, they said, of a changing tone in the debate. In Alabama, where police officers are under instruction to round up anyone they suspect of being undocumented, campaigners embraced his call for a new attitude.

"It's about time that we moved away from extremism and take up, as he said, a more human approach," said Gwendolyn Ferreti, a researcher on immigration who has been campaigning against Alabama's new law, HB56.

Until recently, the prevailing view among the Republican leadership was that a way had to be found to bring up to 12 million undocumented Latinos in the US into the legal fold. Both for economic reasons, to ensure a supply of cheap labour, and for reasons of political self-interest given the growing size of the Hispanic electorate, a compromise had to be reached.

As soon as we do it, the ACLU will sue for voting rights.

This is exactly why I don’t want Gingrich to be the Republican nominee. We meed someone like Bachmann or Santorum, solid conservatives who get it and understand what we face. The last thing America needs is another RINO in the White House.

“Activists’’ my ass. They’re paid agents of the Mexican government agitating on behalf of their own selfish interests and intent on shipping their poor and under class here as a source of foreign capital— sending back billions in remittances, money taken directly from our economy. Bloody racist parasites. It’s infuriating watching and listening to these invaders violate our laws with impunity and a pugnacious pride and at the same time demand not only the protection of the law but they seek to prevent their being applied and enforced in our own country. It’s a veritable act of war.

Just the knowledge that Alabama intends to enforce immigration law in the future has sent illegal aliens packing.

Alabama reaps huge rewards from immigration enforcement bill

Maybe Newt will schedule a Q&A for La Raza so he can explain his plan further and address any concerns they might have.

I'm surprised that you don't remember that all the illegal aliens that Reagan granted amnesty to in 1986, immediately registered to be life long Republicans.

It really works! Grant amnesty and and all Hispanics will vote Republican FOREVER! Legal, illegal, just visiting - BAM - new Republican voters.

Newt, since when is enforcement of existing laws inhuman ?

You’re a great expositor Newt, I’d love to hear the reasoning behind your implication that other Republican’s advocacy of enforcing the law is inhuman.

I hope this is not race politics, I thought that was more popular with the left.

First I want an ironclad clause that anyone who enters the US illegally will be permanently barred from citizenship and voting. I also want laws prohibiting people who have entered the US illegally to be permanently barred from using our social services, including using any amount of Social Security beyond the exact dollar amount they pay in. I want rigidly enforced laws that deport anyone who has entered the US illegally and breaks other laws, including traffic laws. I want anyone who employs illegals to be prosecuted, fined, jailed and made to forfeit property involved in the commission of the crime.

Is Newt serious? Nope.

But, all of this is for naught. Newt would never seal our borders, and therefore, nothing else he is proposing will ever be done. SOP.

You just know that during the German invasion of France, somebody was telling the french leadership, “its only a few Germans and they promise to be good”.

Yet that appears to be beyond the comprehension of too many posters here. The other day, they were having apoplectic fits — alternating rage, name-calling hate-filled things, and using the “Christian card” — anything to allow their beloved illegal aliens to stay, and to excuse what Gingrich said.
