NAPLES, FL -- Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich defended his immigration policy after days of criticism from other GOP contenders – reiterating that he does not support amnesty -- on Friday night before his largest crowd yet on the campaign trail.

"I am not for amnesty for anyone. I am not for a path to citizenship for anybody who got here illegally," Gingrich told the crowd of roughly 750 people, many of whom were forced to stand in the hallway...........

"I think the vast majority [of illegal immigrants] will go home and should go home and then should reapply. I do not think anybody should be eligible for citizenship,".....

Man its like I’m here but I’m not.

Folks, what have I been telling you about Newt since day one? He was before it before he was against it.

Give it up. Your man Newt is going down from self-inflicted wounds.

Puerto Ricans are US citizens and can vote. But not inside Puerto Rico for a federal office because they are not a state. Try reading the Constitution. Puerto Ricans living in the 50 US states can vote to their hearts content. I guess you are considering a similar island enclave for the illegals so that they will not be able to vote as Newt says - Guam? Johnston Island?

And by the way, Obama will grant them amnesty and citizenship by executive order if he is reelected. He just can’t do it now because he is not going to stir up the 75% of the US population that says No to amnesty before an election.

And removal by attrition does work. Why do you think they are clearing out of Alabama etc. in large numbers.

Sorry, Newt’s history. Best you move on to other viable candidates.

Very good point.

What newt doesn’t get is that it’s impossible to give them permanent residence without a path to citizenship. Newt knows that once they have amnesty, they’ll be able to get citizenship.

5000 dollars would only work if they have to apply at the border to get in. Otherwise, it’s just amnesty.

“I think the vast majority [of illegal immigrants] will go home and should go home and then should reapply. I do not think anybody should be eligible for citizenship,”.....

I’ll step out and say this: no one who tried to steal it first (enter the U.S. illegally) will try to buy it later (apply for citizenship).

People who seek to acquire U.S. citizenship love our country and will not try to break its laws.

1. The vast majority of the illegal immigration problem is due to people who came here less than the 25 years that Newt talked about.

2. NONE of these candidates if President would search these people out and deport them. Period.

These men have been here 25 years. Newt thinks they should be legal.

WOW! What a genius! I am SO sure all those "otherwise law abiding" illegals that Newt admires so much will most certainly leave the nation immediately and re-apply the right way - they just needed someone smart like Newt to say PLEASE! (or is it Por Favor?) WHAT A GENIUS!

It’s called damage control pandering to get votes when he knows very well he stepped in it big time a few days ago.

" Get real on this “it’s not amnesty” kick. "

If Newt didn't say what Newt supporters say what he didn't say , why then ?
Why is he back tracking on his words ? or changing his words ? it's because he knew he stepped in it big time...

Once again ? If it's not amnesty ? why then is he back tracking on his words ?

"These men have been here 25 years. Newt thinks they should be legal."

The reason they are so grouchy looking is Newt said they can't become citizens.

Newt has not proposed citizenship. He has proposed 'legal status', which is the first step needed for citizenship.

'Lawful Permanent Residents' LPRs, also known as 'green card holders, who have been in the country a minimum of 5 years qualify and could apply for citizenship. ILLEGAL aliens cannot.

Hi GG!

Newt chooses his words carefully. He is doing it still. He is gambling that with conservatives not wanting Romney they will overlook his major baggage, amnesty proposal included, and vote for him.

No thanks. There are other candidates in this race.

"You can't vote unless you're a full citizen."

Not true. Citizenship is not required in many areas of the US for LOCAL elections.

“A pardon? I suppose if you think a $5000 penalty is amnesty.”

That’s exactly what it is.

How about THIS approach: if you ever cross our border illegally, you are PERMANENTLY disbarred from ever seeking legal entry. Breaking our laws should be more severe than a penalty the next Administration will waive. It should be more than going to the back of the line.

It should be: no soup for you.

Yes, your so-called fine IS amnesty.

LOL! You left out the most important thing....

"At the same time we are controlling the border we should make it easier for honest people to visit America honestly."

That does not sound like "secure the border first" to me. That sounds like his Red Card would roll out "at the same time".

“Cain is the only one consistently against the parasite invaders”

He just hasn’t answered the question yet. Not since this:

http://www.economicfreedomcoalition.com/news/press-opinion-061107.asp

where he mentioned a temporary worker program and a “reasonable program for the 12 million” already here.

Bachmann too, in the Reagan Library debate, acknowledged that this would be the way to go, rather than indiscriminate deportation of all.

Santorum: We can have that discussion later.

Cain’s no different. Read recent posts of mine (yesterday) or those of TitansAFC after the 11/22 debate for a deeper discussion of this.
