NAPLES, FL -- Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich defended his immigration policy after days of criticism from other GOP contenders – reiterating that he does not support amnesty -- on Friday night before his largest crowd yet on the campaign trail.

"I am not for amnesty for anyone. I am not for a path to citizenship for anybody who got here illegally," Gingrich told the crowd of roughly 750 people, many of whom were forced to stand in the hallway...........

"I think the vast majority [of illegal immigrants] will go home and should go home and then should reapply. I do not think anybody should be eligible for citizenship,".....

Wow, that was back in 2007, before the financial meltdown. Has he called for a guest worker program since he started running for president under our new economic reality of chronic mass unemployment? Newt has embraced the Red Card plan that does just that. Kriebel clearly wants to re-open the cheap labor pipeline. Yeah, that will be a great selling point to the millions of unemployed and underemployed.

Another "illegal is illegal" "purist".

I'm willing to see how serious you are. Compile a list of every law you broke over the last 25 years, that you didn't get caught for (speeding/littering/anything else). Once done, turn yourself in to accept any fine or punishment associated with the broken law.

So you are equating littering with illegal entry into this country and all of the associated identity-theft crimes that stem from living and working here illegally.

Quite the sorry hill you have staked out to fight on.

Chant that was directed at Newt when he was he in Naples, but none of the Newties claimed it was ever heard at his Town Hall Meeting:

“I'm a little teapot short and stout - pour me over and crap comes out”

I guess the little teapot can't take the heat....waiting for his temper to boil over at the next question on his Amnesty Plan.

The Puerto Ricans don't want citizenship!

They can have all the entitlements without the hassle.

Same with all those folks in the US Virgin Islands. However, at least in St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John they enforce the immigration laws. You don't see any illegal Mexicans coming into the communites and staying there forever!

Already tweaking his message to make it more palatable to the public.

Nope - just showing some who holler, "but they broke the law", as their fallback argument that they are hypocrites and will use any argument to keep from actually thinking about it. Since they call for "purity", they really ought to be willing to be as equally "pure", else their arguments are "Quite the sorry hill you they have staked out to fight on". "I'd wager some of self-same stone-throwers have broken some pretty big laws in their lifetime, without getting caught, and would never consider that they should pay the piper.

All these politicians treat us like we’re stupid on this issue.
Wait, its a positive economic impact because they pay into SS and aren’t eligible! Uhhh that goes away when you make them citizens.
They keep the price of goods down! Ummm but we pay for free schooling, free medical, food aid and who knows what else. Two or three kids these families are getting 30-50k in education a year. Toss in everything else and tell me they keep prices down by 50-80k a year. You can hire an American citizen for half that difference more than the illegal was making and still be ahead of the game.

Since they call for "purity",

First of all, the poster in question made no such comment - you just were itching to jump in with your latest contrived talking point.

And second, what you call purism is basic sense - the illegal immigration debate is littered with those who gave lip service to border security and enforcement while pushing for amnesty. So the skeptics are the ones acting in a reasonable manner - any talk of border security needs to be decoupled from talk of amnesty to be taken seriously.

Your purism schtick has been used to bash conservative positions from abortion to anti-gay-rights to gun rights and now this.

It has an even more sorry history than the amnesty shills.

I think he needs to get experience. Maybe a stint on the border patrol.

Yeah, but under the current system, the bill for those costs is shifted from the employer to the taxpayer, which is why those who employ illegals want a Red Card program to bring in even more cheap third-world labor.

Privatize profits, socialize costs. We see it with the financial bailouts and we see it in the amnesty debates. And both are driven by the unprincipled and the unscrupulous.

Despite what some claim, the solution to the illegal immigration problem is not complex. All it takes is removing bennies, enforcing existing laws and cracking down on those who hire illegals. Such actions would drive mass self-deportation. Just the possibility of a partial enactment of such a program at the state level in Alabama, Georgia and Arizona drove mass illegal emigration. Imagine if that kind of comprehensive reform was done nationwide.

But there is no power and influence to be gained in DC by taking steps to actually solve the problem. Which is why so few in DC are serious about taking such steps.

Pay your use tax religiously? Report as income all services, you receive. Loan someone 20 bucks. Did you report the imputed interest you received, even if you did not receive any. I'd bet your interlocutor needs some hard time in stoney lonesome for tax evasion if nothing else.

'Lawful Permanent Residents' LPRs, also known as 'green card holders, who have been in the country a minimum of 5 years qualify and could apply for citizenship. ILLEGAL aliens cannot.

Agreed. But their is more to this woeful line of thinking. If we were to give legal status to some 10 million illegals, the neo-communist organizers like La Raza and the CPUSA would have a party...and a sit-in...and an OccupyWhatever...and a riot...and another riot... Now, try and deport them! Talk about political agitation! They would not stop until their "rightful" place as citizens is gained. See the history of so-called refugees in Israel for reference.

Even if he isn’t giving them citizenship, it’s still amnesty. He’s just playing with words here, treating us like we’re stupid.

***
He figures he can just keep talking and using big words and we’ll fall in line. Positively Obamanian.

Yes the costs are shifted from private to public in this mess which is why the only solution is to say hasta la vista to them.
I did in fact state that the issue is the cost of entertaining our illegal guests as opposed to the supposed benefits.

The wheel of fortune, the government insiders revolving door amnesty.

He's not just using big words, but, tweaking as he goes along.
