LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

I’m still into Cain too.
Gingrich is a poor second.
Romney requires a vote for a third party.

Agree. We have the chance to elect one of the greatest leaders in years. It will take time to undo all the damage by Obama but Newt will take this nation on the right path...not a single republican running is in Newt’s class.

My thoughts exactly. It comes down to packing the House and Senate with people that will adhere to the Constitution, strictly. If we had that in place, O would already be a skid mark in the annals of history. Its not so much O that “scares” me that much, its a willing House and Senate that are letting the Executive Branch “rule”...Change the “power” to the legislative branch with Constitutionalists and O is nothing but a neutered lame duck; same goes for Mittens, Perry, Newt; anyone..

Wrong, the rats have enough files and video on newt that it require ten big trucks to haul. He would be hung out to dry like an old stained pair of his long johns.

Whatever. Just rest assured that there is no scenario in which I cast a vote for Mitt Romney.

Newt doesnt sound quite that brilliant when the rubber meets the road and he is under stress, compared to being on a stage throwing out half-baked ideas that few question. He has been known to blow the whole game by not understanding the game and how to play it, and by talking.

He blames Newt for the Republican Revolution of 1994 foundering. In reality, Bob Dole led a broadside assault against all Revolutionaries in his 1996, telling them to get the hell out of HIS party. A fiery speech by Buchanan had put Dole into the lead going into his convention speech, but Dole’s speech equated reform with extremism.

Isn't it fun that as soon as a Republican candidate has the temerity to poke his nose out in front, even briefly, he is hit with stuff from the RINO delegation until he starts to collapse? It makes no difference what sort of stuff it is, so long as there is enough of it.

I wonder why that is. /sarc

If Newt’s the nominee we’ll have four more years of Obama picking Supreme Court Justices.

The government shutdown is the example many reach for when thinking Newt would be a disaster. But remember, this was BEFORE Fox News and BEFORE sites like freerepublic where conservatives finally got a voice. Remember when your news came almost exclusively from people like Dan Rather or Peter Jennings and publications like Time and Newsweek? No wonder people turned on the government shutdown like they did.

Well, after a 3.5 year probe, after Newt paid the $300,000 fine, the IRS announced on February 3, 1999, that it found NO IMPROPRIETIES IN THE TAX FILINGS of Gingrich and the sponsoring Progress and Freedom Foundation. The IRS said the principles taught in the course were not of use only in political campaigns. "The ... course taught principles from American civilization that could be used by each American in everyday life whether the person is a welfare recipient, the head of a large corporation, or a politician."

http://www.rightgrrl.com/carolyn/newt.html

75 baseless charges were brought against Gingrich during the Clinton era as a diversionary tactic.

Gingrich was found not guilty by the IRS on an obscure tax charge.

I expect, Cainiacs, if I could have recorded you at the time in the late 1990's that you all would have been calling these charges against Gingrich a witchhunt, baseless, and vindictive.

I'll bet I could find article on Free Republic from the time saying the same thing.
