Gingrich Is Uniting the Tea Party and Establishment
Weekly Standard ^ | 12/01/11 | Jeffrey Anderson

Posted on 12/01/2011 4:14:24 PM PST by freespirited

The latest Rasmussen poll of likely voters — which shows Newt Gingrich with a 21-point lead over runner-up Mitt Romney — suggests that Gingrich is uniting the Tea Party and establishment wings of the Republican Party. The poll shows that among likely Republican primary voters who do not consider themselves to be members of the Tea Party, Gingrich is winning by 11 percentage points — 32 to 21 percent (over Romney). Among those who do consider themselves to be members of the Tea Party, he’s winning by 37 points — 47 to 10 percent (over Romney and Herman Cain). Among those who aren’t sure, he’s winning by 26 points — 42 to 16 percent (over Romney).

Moreover, Gingrich is winning not only among Republicans but also among those independents who are likely to vote in a Republican primary — in both cases by a margin of about 2 to 1. Among Republicans, he’s winning by a tally of 40 to 18 percent (over Romney). Among those independents who are likely to vote in a Republican primary, he’s winning by a tally of 30 to 17 percent (over Ron Paul).

Overall, Gingrich enjoys better than 2-to-1 leads (over anyone) among those who are between the ages of 40 and 64, those who are at least 65 years of age, those who say they are “very conservative,” those who say they are “somewhat conservative,” those who are married, those who are Protestant, those who are Evangelical, those who make less than $60,000 a year, those who make more than $100,000 a year, and men. Meanwhile, he enjoys double-digit (but not 2-to-1) leads among those who are single, those who are Catholic, those who make between $60,000 and $100,000 a year, and women.

Newt is also gaining on Mitt at Intrade. Last week Mitt was at 68, Newt in the teens. Now Mitt is leading only by nine points: 46-37.

No way.

The reason the Tea Party movement was founded was to fight the policies of the establishment.

But, but, but what about all this "baggage" I keep hearing about? It's supposed to terrify people and keep them from voting for the man. Must be some weird sh*t, that "Baggage" wherever it is, but nobody seems to care too much.

I’m TEA Party and I’d vote for Newt, but wait anxiously for Sarah Palin’s entrance. I’d never in a million years vote for Myth Romney. NEVER.

The rats will spend millions to try to split them up. We have a year of the sideshow yet to come and lots of things to happen.

The media must be planning quite a trashing for him.

But man, I would pay to watch him debate Obama. Or Hillary or Biden or whomever.

No hes not. I’m Tea party and not voting for the Rino backup now that Romney been shown for the low numbered Rino he always was. Silly thing, but most all Tea party I know are independent thinkers and not easily swayed by polls or chatter from internet war rooms of other candidates.

Newt is stands for everything the Tea Party is fighting against.

Newt is a snake-oil salesman, the ultimate insider and totally corrupt.

Newt is the Establishment’s alternative to Mitt — either way they win.

There are some Tea Party people who are temporarily supporting Newt — because “he seems smart in the debates” — but most of them will soon come to their senses. The problem is a lack of viable alternatives — the Establishment has destroyed all of them.

I like Newt's speechifying, but I worry that he may not have the temperament, discipline, or stamina to be president for eight years. He is 68 y/o, a hothead, and disorganized. He even takes grand detours in extemporaneous remarks, often neglecting to return to his original point. I would like him as the “Pontification Czar.” Oh, and he's a Big Govt. Republican.
