OK. It’s Friday. D-Day.

Can you imagine how HC must feel right now? He’s been able to discuss this with his wife from a distance, over the phone. Now he has to walk in the front door and look her in the eyes.

I’ve been married for 15 years and have made my share of mistakes. Nothing near the magnitude of this but mistakes none the less. There is no worse feeling than having to sit down next to the wife, and explain my stupidity.
I imagine his nerves are probably peaked....

Taken on face value, what he did was done with very poor foresight. At this point, we don’t know why he felt the need to pay this woman money for rent and such on a monthly basis for 13 years. Was it charity? Maybe. We don’t know what the 60-odd text messages say or even who wrote the majority of them. We currently don’t know much of anything but the speculation that is going around is pretty nuts. That being said, on a human viewpoint, it doesn’t sound good. If this were a friend of mine and he did all of the above, I would have some real deep questions for him. My thoughts would be that there is something deeper to this.
In the mind of voters, HC’s image is now tarnished. A lot of people are looking at this as too much drama. It’s going to be a very big hole for him to crawl out of. It is all going to be based on how he decides to continue.

Are you celebrating it, sir or ma’am?

No. But it is good to know that Cain is not the man we all projected him to be. Unfortunately his wife has just found that out along with us.

You don't pay another woman's rent for years and not tell your wife unless.... [Fill in the blank].

Use Occam's Razor.

I had not heard he had been paying her rent for years without his wife's knowledge. If nothing else, it has the appearance of an impropriety, doesn't it?

I can guarantee you that my wife would not be "thrilled" by it even one little bit.

I need a link on the part about paying rent for years without wife's knowledge. Do you have one?

Really, though, this is not the reason folks have moved away from Cain. It was the foreign policy gaffes, the state immigration gaffe, and the lack of constitutional knowledge that really hurt him. (I wasn't warm and cozy with his pro-choice verbiage - however much denied - even before that.)

The clincher for me was when he did the 3 hour debate with Gingrich and kept asking Newt for the answers. It made clear to me that even Herman Cain thought Newt was the expert in the room. Who was I to disagree with him about himself?

This race is over. Gingrich has risen to the top based on quality communication, debating, handling of the media, and policy substance. The remainder of the conservatives should drop out so Romney will realize that he's been smoked.

You did not, but Cain did,
and he tried to blame the bimbo eruptions on him as well.

Before marrying Marianne, Gingrich presented his first wife, Jackie Battley, with the terms of their divorce as she lay in a hospital bed recovering from surgery for uterine cancer. Gingrich had pursued Marianne from nearly the moment they met at a January 1980 fundraiser:

http://www.creators.com/conservative/jackie-gingrich-cushman/setting-the-record-straight.html

Newt's daughter by his first wife wrote the letter at the above link in which she said this:

My father, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, has been in politics as long as I can remember.

And as long as I can remember, media coverage about him has contained misstatements of facts. The vast majority are simple mistakes that are easily corrected, understood and rewoven into an ongoing storyline.

But one of them seems to have taken on a life of its own, and simple corrections have not sufficed to set the record straight. Why does this happen? I can't be sure, but I suspect that the narrative created by these untruths proves to be so much more compelling and more dramatic than what actually happened that it proves irresistible.

I'm talking about the story of my father's visit to my mother while she was in the hospital in 1980.

For years, I have thought about trying to correct the untrue accounts of this hospital visit. After all, I was at the hospital with them, and saw and heard what happened. But I have always hesitated, as it was a private family matter and my mother is a very private person. In addition, for the four people involved, it was one of a million interactions and was not considered a defining event by any of us.

My mother and I have both recently run into quite a few people who hold an inaccurate understanding of this hospital visit. Many think my mother is dead.

So, to correct the record, here is what happened: My mother, Jackie Battley Gingrich, is very much alive, and often spends time with my family. I am lucky to have such a "Miracle Mom," as I titled her in a column this week.

As for my parents' divorce, I can remember when they told me.

It was the spring of 1980.

I was 13 years old, and we were about to leave Fairfax, Va., and drive to Carrollton, Ga., for the summer. My parents told my sister and me that they were getting a divorce as our family of four sat around the kitchen table of our ranch home.

Soon afterward, my mom, sister and I got into our light-blue Chevrolet Impala and drove back to Carrollton.

Later that summer, Mom went to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for surgery to remove a tumor. While she was there, Dad took my sister and me to see her.

It is this visit that has turned into the infamous hospital visit about which many untruths have been told. I won't repeat them. You can look them up online if you are interested in untruths. But here's what happened:

My mother and father were already in the process of getting a divorce, which she requested.

Dad took my sister and me to the hospital to see our mother.

She had undergone surgery the day before to remove a tumor.

The tumor was benign.

As with many divorces, it was hard and painful for all involved, but life continued.

As have many families, we have healed; we have moved on.

We are not a perfect family, but we are knit together through common bonds, commitment and love.

My mother and father are alive and well, and my sister and I are blessed to have a close relationship with them both.

My sister and I feel that it is time to move on, close the book on this event and focus on building a great future. We will not answer additional questions or make additional comments regarding this meaningless incident, which occurred more than three decades ago.

As I said, my mother is a private person. She will not give media interviews. She deserves respect and should be allowed to live in peace.

Based on this letter from Newt's own daughter who is also the loving daughter of the wife in the hospital, it is obvious that your last post was based on some glaring errors in fact.

Because of that, and because the points of the article are based on those errors of fact, it is impossible to consider it a relevant article.

Note how nowhere does the daughter say what the conversation that took place in the hospital between her mother and father was about. She just says they went to the hospital for the visit. Her comments say nothing about what took place or the topic discussed between them. So your point is moot. I suggest you read the September 2011 Esquire magazine about Newt in its entirety. Then you will know a whole lot more about Newt Gingrich and how he operates. It’s an eye opener.

Heaven forbid should we stick to the ideals of a conservative era and forgo the progressive garbage of today's generation.

Oh, I'm sorry, a liberal democrat sponge who does nothing SHOULD get half of all her husband's hard-earned income PLUS alimony, child support, the house, extra for pain and suffering, healthcare, SS, medicare, medicaid, childcare, unemployment, etc, etc, etc.

He earned the money, not her.

lol...you ain't married hoss nor ever been divorced with that comment

i for one do not consider my money separate from my wife unless she left me

if a woman is your partner and especially is she is baby maker and stay home sort then she is not to be kept some sort of prisoner to the fact that you earn the money...sure everyone has to be responsible but my wife is going to know about big decisions I make and when I send family, friends and yes even women I know/knew...and not intimate with ever ...I am going to go over it with her first. And if perchance it was an old lover who had hit bad times and needed a hand I would FOR DAMN SURE tell her...good lord think of the consequence and trust if you don't...whew....might as well sleep with them as soon as send them cash so long hiding it from wife...the end ain't gonna feel much different

one thing my sent from heaven wife does not have a vote on is hunting expenses for me and the lads...she knows that is my province and respects that...sorta like me and her highlights and retin-a

I like Herman Cain.

I saw/heard him speak at a tea party during a Tea Party Express Bus Tour last year.

I was impressed.

Afterwards, I tuned into his radio show, I was less impressed.

Apparantly he hasn't been home to see his wife since this latest peccadillo hit the scene.

He said he is going to make a decision before Monday, which IMO means he will make an announcement on that day after talking in person with his wife.

It's a big (probably insurmountable) mistake for a married man to have a close friend that is a woman for 15 years without his wife knowing.

Especially when there is money changing hands.

He sometimes paid her rent and car payment.

Over several years.

It seems like she was depending on his help instead of taking care of her expenses her self.

Helping her IMO just kept her dependent on his generosity.

Because of all this, not to mention his occasionally clumsiness when speaking, I believe he will announce on Monday that he is either dropping out or suspending his campaign.

I'll be sorry to see him go.

He could have been a contender.

I have been around needy women before.
You help, if there are no options, and you care about them.

Normally I would help them help themselves, that’s just common sense, because you don’t want to create self esteem problems or enable bad behavior.

I would never consider supporting anyone unbeknownst to my wife.

In all of this mess, I feel so badly for Mrs. Cain. She is a classy lady, and doesn’t deserve any of this.

Neither do their children.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with his campaign. However, he was a hero of mine when he almost single handedly destroyed HillaryCare.

I’ll never, ever forget him for that.

RE: Newt...I do think he’s a changed man, morally speaking. I know he has a 94% ACU rating, but sometimes he doesn’t act like it.

Mark Levin is a very wise man, and I agree with him.
