If you’ll dig deeper into those numbers, you’ll find many segments are doing fine. Get into a “doing fine” segment. There’s enormous hiring going on in South Dakota and other “flyover country” for the full spectrum of jobs - GO THERE.
“But it’s too hard/expensive/annoying/melancholy to leave home and go to icky South Dakota!” Tough. Move. I did (to GA). If moving is too [insert complaint here], then you must have it pretty good where you are. Nobody’s gonna hand you a cushy high-paying do-nothing job.

I doubt anybody in this country really knows what poor is.
If they have cable TV, they’re not poor.
In NYC schools vocationals are on a downward trend. There are many new career oriented schools opening, but the positions require academic work beyond HS. Things like journalism, media, finance etc. The old trade schools,except maybe Aviation HS, are falling by the wayside. Yet the city and surrounding areas have a dearth of people who can be carpenters, dry cleaners, plumbers, a/c repair etc. These skills are left to the for profit schools that advertise on afternoon TV, and whose record of success and honesty is not always believable. You’re quite correct about the college for all nonsense. I don’t know how many barely literate 8th graders I saw from Queensbridge Houses who told me they wanted to be a lawyer when it was unlikely they’d ever learn enough to even serve a subpoena.
Verily, it’s a sad state of affairs in the public schools. We’re in a pendulum shift right now, and as you say, the *for profit* schools are filling that void. Perhaps we’ll live long enough to see a shift in the other direction.
In our state, Pratt & Whitney used to be the largest employer...now it is the casinos. Young men and women with or without a HS degree could get a journeyman job in a tool and die shop and live the American dream with that income. I’m hard pressed to think of a small tool shop I know of anywhere, when they used to dot every corner and back lot.
The times have produced a need, here, for large numbers of workers with rags and window cleaner to wipe down the slot machines; from observation, a lot of these workers are Orientals, probably the *first generation* Newt mentions.
Historically, 75% of the students who reach age 16 in the City of Hartford, CT drop-out of school. The *hooks* that keep them interested in learning, like shop, woodworking, small engine repair, home ec, health, sewing arts have vanished from the curriculum.
I'd like to the throttle the people out there that expect the government to "create jobs" or provide jobs and the hustlers that promise them.

We’re talking about the things Gingrich said about poor children working, not his marital history.
Actually, most of the OWS “kids” probably do have a father at home, one who is making big bucks doing something the OWS kid is protesting against. But the kid knows he can do it and get away with it because all will be forgiven and forgotten in a couple of years when said OWS “kid” wants a job with Daddy’s firm.
That’s how it was back in the 60s. It was the priviledged kids out there “protesting.” I was in college then and I knew some of this group...and I remember once being invited to the home of one of them after he was returning from a demonstration. The maid had laid out a lovely spread for us.
I don’t know what this guy is doing now, but I’d assume he’s probably a successful lawyer/media person/investment banker - and is the father of one of these OWS goombahs. The reason they’re doing this is that know it doesn’t mean anything, but it makes them feel important for a moment and lets them symbolically rebel against their fathers. Freud was wrong on most things, but he was right on this.
He’s correct. Most of the poor neighborhoods are black neighborhoods and unemployment among black youth is the highest it has ever been as long as those records have been kept. And when you have neighborhoods in which the main businesses are liquor stores and currency exchanges, the opportunities for kids to work are pretty much non-existent.
Cause and effect.
Because of the lack of a good structured education, you get the effect of more people from poorer people that can't earn a living later. Add drugs like pot, alchohol and other things and you have a mess.
Newt is right.
That was some straight talk.
Blacks in this country despite the most freedom in the world are screwing themselves because they won't move to get work, have been abusing substances more and have had use of the great society programs too long to require little from them, so they do little.
But it isn't a black issue, blacks from Africa come here and kick butt like the Asians do my friend.

I will support any conservative(I frankly don’t think any elected official has what it takes) for PoTUS and I would even support an honest moderate if it came to that...those calling themselves conservatives when they are leftists will never get my support.
Supporting a leftist for president is giving up.
Methinks the 1990 GOPhackcare was a bluff to prove the Left wasn’t serious about health care as such; Newt et al didn’t expect or want it to pass. Sometimes, to win an argument, you say “sure, ok, I’ll give you everything you say you want and that I’m profoundly opposed to - oh, you don’t want it after all, eh? Thought so.”
To get back to The Newt’s idea one would agree that a work ethic is precious. Whose job is that to teach? Absent parents, it falls to the school in his scenario, who are already presently teaching *character building*, manners and other social skills, [that should rightfully be taught at home, in an ideal world].
As a practical matter, a school of 550 students has one custodian [days 6AM-3PM]; b/c of shortage of funds, there are only 2 night custodians. With the enormous amount of work to be done in the night time frame, for a fairly large 2-story building, a custodian would have to monitor the child. During the summer, kids do get summer jobs, helping with custodial work. They are paid a fair wage through some federally funded inner city jobs program. The custodians complain, they can’t trust the kids, or let them out of their sight [b/c of rampant stealing, or they just *dog* it]. Last summer, the summer job-core kids stole 24 new computers from the computer lab. Before it was noticed, it was too late.
While noble, in practicality, I wonder aloud how this type of program would work. It would be great if it did, but this becomes just another instance where the school takes over for what the family should be doing [teaching a work ethic]. I can see the need for *supervisors* of these kids, yet another expense, school systems can ill afford.
Part of that is the propaganda that's being pushed in the inner city schools that puts down achievement and promotes dependency and cultural rot.
