Huntsman to skip Iowa debate, plans NH town hall (will do a Lincoln-Douglas debate with Gingrich)

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is skipping next week's presidential primary debate in Iowa. ABC is to televise the event nationally. Huntsman on Friday says he'll instead have a town hall-style meeting on Dec. 10 in New Hampshire, a state that is central to his political strategy. Huntsman has written-off Iowa and has spent neither time nor money there. Huntsman also has accepted an invitation to do a one-on-one debate with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in New Hampshire. The two will meet in Windham for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate with tea party activists on Dec. 12. Gingrich has invited each of his rivals for one-on-one conversations.

I realized this morning who Huntsman reminds me of: Mr. Rogers.
Oh, and I watched a long news segment on Romney last night, probably 25 or more pictures in different situations flashed during the piece, everyone of these shots he had a white dress shirt on. Has anyone seen Romney in anything but a white shirt and dark pants?

Maybe we need a third party, but NOT at this juncture in history...it's too big of a risk to get obama back again.

Remember, without Perot, we would not have had bill clinton....I learned my lesson on that one, but good.

Nothing to lose, everything to gain, even though he’ll never catch on with the base.

Yeah, I think he’s also into cap and trade, which is not good.

“He elevates Huntsman who can really benefit from the exposure”

This is good. Huntsman is more conservative than Gingrich.

Huntsman’s got nothing to lose and will probably go in packed with grenades.

It’s a win/win. Best case scenario: they both self destruct. Worst case scenario: Newt wins and steals Huntsman’s supporters which gives him a 1% bump in the polls.

You could have said the same thing about McCain in 2008, however he still won, over the LOUD objections of many conservatives (especially those here on FR).

But it’s different with Huntsman, as Huntsman is FAR more conservative than McCain, and more conservative than Mitt & Newt. He can win.

The funny thing is that Huntsman is a pretty conservative fellow...unfortunately, he bit on the “serve your country” China thing with Obama and now is dead to Conservatives...

I agree. But it could be that Huntsman was thinking what a great opportunity for his family to live in another country and with him being Ambassador of China although important I still don’t think it was as bad as Newt sitting down with Nancy over Global Warming. I mean if Huntsman was a complete conservative (I am not sure of his pro-life status), I would support Huntsman over Newt.

Hey, what does Huntsman have to lose?

I think he is a bigger RINO than any of our other candidates. Hell, folks, he WENT TO WORK FOR HUSSEIN.

"Why give him a hand up when he is stuck in last place?"

To flood the zone with RINO hamburger ... If Huntz comes off even just ok against Gingrich it hurts Mittens ...

"no doubt Huntsman will look for opportunities to draw blood."

What, by opening a vein and bleeding all over himself? Newt knows Huntsman sux rocks...better sport would have been had debating a Presidential-candidate blast-from-the-past like Buchanan...

The coward Romney FLED Massachusetts, and
now has fled NH and this debate

while his surrogates protect him.

Why not? Huntsman, if he surges, would draw more from Romney than anyone else, IMHO.

With THREE debates in Iowa in a 9 day window, there's no reason Huntsman shouldn't skip one with Iowa not part of his "strategy."

I hope Newt stays composed. Huntsman has a knack for groan-eliciting jab attempts.

I think Romney screwed up on this one. Right now, it is Romney vs. Gingrich, and Iowa is fast approaching. If these one-on-one debates became the norm over the next few months, it would set a precedent which could carry forward to the general election. Obama would be crushed in such a one-on-one format, either by Gingrich or Romney.

Does anyone remember the Saddleback debate? Obama one-on-one with Rick Warren was a Obama's worst debate, and McCain's best.
