Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told POLITICO Friday that Herman Cain is leaning toward suspending the campaign, in the words of one, who stressed no decision has been made.
Hell probably get out, but nothings been decided, another source said.
The one-time leader in the Republican presidential polls is scheduled to address supporters at the opening of his Georgia state headquarters Saturday. He was set to meet with his wife Friday to discuss the future of his candidacy at the end of a week at which he and aides repeatedly said he was reassessing his candidacy.
Cain himself has sounded conflicted about the decision, saying in interviews this week that he was eager to spare his wife and family any further pain. But at events in Michigan, Ohio and South Carolina this week, hes taken a defiant tone.
The source cited the toll the period that began on Oct. 30 has taken on his family something Cain has discussed publicly over the last few days.
The two options hes weighing are continuing forward with the campaign, or suspending the campaign, the first source said.
But Cain may still decide to fight, the source added. Either way, Cain has made clear he is not conceding the allegations against him are true, and also that he plans to keep fighting to clear himself somehow, although its not clear what form that would take.
Whats also become clear is that some of Cains advisers want him to keep going.
Cains campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon pushed back on the rumors that the candidate would likely leave the race, saying, I dont know where they are getting their information.
Gordon referred back to Cains comments on Fox News on Thursday night that hed make a decision by Monday and at a town hall on Friday, where he said hed announce his future plans on Saturday.
I dont have anything to add from what Mr. Cain said in Rock Hill, S.C., and on the Sean Hannity program, Gordon said.
Cain aides were preparing for a campaign through the Iowa caucuses as recently as Thursday night, when the candidates Iowa chairman Steve Grubbs says he met with campaign manager Mark Block in Des Moines. Grubbs said they even submitted a campaign mobile app to Apple for approval on Friday.
Cains schedule is filled well into next week, with plans to campaign in Oklahoma on Monday and to speak at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum on Wednesday. The national campaign also just launched the Women for Herman Cain group, naming Cains wife Gloria, as its head.
We were planning the campaign for the rest of the month. We have a lot of work to do, Grubbs said. Weve got all sorts of things going on, so I would be real disappointed if he did drop out.
People get paid to write this? hope the guy didn’t go “out on a limb” with this remark, “The two options hes weighing are continuing forward with the campaign, or suspending the campaign, the first source said.” well..duh
Yeah that’s rich isn’t it? Breaking news he is either quitting or continuing.
Politico mission accomplished.
Um, he's dropping out. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Herman pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.
So what will be you glib comment if he does suspend the campaign?
Newt has no chance in Hades of winning the general.
This is either mass suicide or the Establishment playing everyone like fiddles, or both.
I wish I could say it will pass df, but I’m not sure.
I expected this of the left, but the response form the right was eye opening to say the least.
I refuse to stand with a bunch of coward sissies.
And there is NO WAY in HELL I’m going to move from an inncoent man accused of adultery to a known adulterer, just ain’t gonna do it.
I don’t know... if he hangs in there, this could prove to be an instance of the media firing all its ammo too early. People forget pretty quickly, they say. 45 days is about how long it takes for a story to slip down the memory hole. If, like Perot, he pulls out because the heat’s too much, then... well... he’ll just be another candidate successfully Borked. I sure do get sick of it.
Typical politico reporting, Cain is going to stay in the race or Cain is going to suspend his campaign or Cain is going to exit the race...What a MONGO scoot, this should be on frontpage...
Why don’t they just post their childish tweets and paste a bunch of the twits together and print, would be better than this pile of dung...
No, he doesn’t, and I’m utterly disgusted with so called conservatives at this point.
I may well be at the point of rooting for their defeat.
God help me.
Really? You’d quit that easily? You must not have kids. Keep the faith and keep fighting. More importantly work to keep the House and capture the Senate. Holding those two for a generation will set us back on track, even with a RINO in the WH.
I feel a bit angry at how they have treated him.
I bet Cain announces tomorrow that his wife “strongly supports” him and he will stay in the race to help regain his reputation.
Politico strikes with those absurd unnamed sources again!
They will do ANYTHING to try and get this man to lose support.
Exactly. As if they had any credibility left.
Sweet Lord Jesus, I am amazed at the way Republicans are led by the nose by their enemies to discard the people who are on their side and fooled into embracing the snakes in the grass!
At this point, I'm on the train, we'll see how far it goes.
That cartoon is perfect.
But the MSM can’t butcher anybody without the consent of the “conservatives”. That is who is really on trial in all this. This is about whether we are gonna let the media and Axelrod’s Chicago choose our candidate. If so, we may as well roll over and die. Sort of like if those turkeys each caught the other one and put him on the chopping block until they’re all dead.
Thank you, Simone.
