Herman Cain 2012 drop-out decision: 'Leaning toward' campaign suspension
Politico ^ | 12/02/11 | Maggie Haberman & Reid Epstein

Posted on 12/02/2011 6:39:28 PM PST by freespirited

Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told POLITICO Friday that Herman Cain is “leaning toward suspending the campaign,” in the words of one, who stressed no decision has been made.

“He’ll probably get out, but nothing’s been decided,” another source said.

The one-time leader in the Republican presidential polls is scheduled to address supporters at the opening of his Georgia state headquarters Saturday. He was set to meet with his wife Friday to discuss the future of his candidacy at the end of a week at which he and aides repeatedly said he was “reassessing” his candidacy.

Cain himself has sounded conflicted about the decision, saying in interviews this week that he was eager to spare his wife and family any further pain. But at events in Michigan, Ohio and South Carolina this week, he’s taken a defiant tone.

The source cited the toll the period that began on Oct. 30 has taken on his family — something Cain has discussed publicly over the last few days.

The two options he’s weighing are “continuing forward with the campaign, or suspending the campaign,” the first source said.

But Cain may still decide to fight, the source added. Either way, Cain has made clear he is not conceding the allegations against him are true, and also that he plans to keep fighting to clear himself somehow, although it’s not clear what form that would take.

What’s also become clear is that some of Cain’s advisers want him to keep going.

Cain’s campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon pushed back on the rumors that the candidate would likely leave the race, saying, “I don’t know where they are getting their information.”

Gordon referred back to Cain’s comments on Fox News on Thursday night that he’d make a decision by Monday and at a town hall on Friday, where he said he’d announce his future plans on Saturday.

“I don’t have anything to add from what Mr. Cain said in Rock Hill, S.C., and on the Sean Hannity program,” Gordon said.

Cain aides were preparing for a campaign through the Iowa caucuses as recently as Thursday night, when the candidate’s Iowa chairman Steve Grubbs says he met with campaign manager Mark Block in Des Moines. Grubbs said they even submitted a campaign mobile app to Apple for approval on Friday.

Cain’s schedule is filled well into next week, with plans to campaign in Oklahoma on Monday and to speak at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum on Wednesday. The national campaign also just launched the Women for Herman Cain group, naming Cain’s wife Gloria, as its head.

“We were planning the campaign for the rest of the month. We have a lot of work to do,” Grubbs said. “We’ve got all sorts of things going on, so I would be real disappointed if he did drop out.”

I could reluctantly vote for Gingrich, but I also agree that I don’t think he has a snowball’s chance of winning the general election. This is the way the stupid party works.....they always make sure the “it’s my turn next” guy always gets his “turn”.

As I’ve stated in the past, the ballot box has become and absolutely worthless lost cause.

“Concerning the destruction of the country, better that it should be done in one fell swoop, rather than by a thousand cuts.”

Better for whom?

I am seeing that it really riles you Cain Train passengers when reasonable people embrace a reasonable and obvious conclusion from indisputable facts put forth by Mr. Cain himself.

Very strange, cult-like behavior. You’d never give Obama the same benefit of the doubt. Would you? But Cain? Why, the man can do no wrong!

Very strange.

It’s pretty clear you’re out of ammunition when the best you can do is to make fun of a screen nick.

It’s pretty clear you wouldn’t be as purposely obnoxious as you are if we were all in person discussing this. I guarantee it with how childish you are in obsessively ridiculing people randomly.

It’s Politico that started this whole process weeks ago. They’ve successfully brought Cain down. And it’s Politico who’s laughing tonight — at all of us.

You're right. We have no idea if Herman Cain is dropping out.

But during the phase when FR members were talking about the payments to the two women by the National Restaurant Assocation, this attorney was watching hundreds of FR posters write things like "my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who said that anytime a payment is called severance it proves there wasn't really any harassment!"

And i just face-palmed, as you're doing now.

Politico’s unnamed sources have said a lot of things about Mr. Cain. Thus far they’ve proven to be wildly biased and inaccurate.

Politico never meant to prove anything, only to bring down Cain. Mission accomplished.

What’s random about responding to other posters in an opinion forum? That seems rather targeted to me.

And if we’re going to discuss “childish” — what could be more childish than your poking fun at a screen name instead of responding with a substantive argument?

Incidentally, *both* of your last two posts are completely devoid of any real content or any real argument to advance your position. I guess you define “obnoxious” as “doesn’t agree with my views”.

Do you realize that words have meaning? Or do you just string them together willy-nilly? I can point you to some good dictionary websites if you’d like. I think they might help you.

>> Good Lord, he never claimed to be a prophet.

“Considering that is my sentiment as well, it’s reasonable to conclude a lot of folks are feeling the exact same thing... Sounds prophetic...

There’s a slow burn in me too. I don’t know who is behind this smear against Herman Cain but I hope it turns back on them. I hope they suffer all the pain they wanted to put on Mr. Cain plus 7 x 7!

I hope Mr. Cain stays in it because I want to vote for him now, after they’ve done this to him, more then I’ve ever wanted to vote for any one.

If Cain is guilty, then so be it.

But man, you gotta get your facts straight if you’re gonna lynch someone:

Ginger White says the money was only for the last 2.5 years.

Now I realize that even a couple months worth of giving money to “another woman” is enough to hang Cain in many people’s eyes. But let’s not be guilty of doing what the media does. If it was 2.5 years, then it was 2.5 years, not 13 years. Let’s get our facts right.
