Herman Cain 2012 drop-out decision: 'Leaning toward' campaign suspension
Politico ^ | 12/02/11 | Maggie Haberman & Reid Epstein

Posted on 12/02/2011 6:39:28 PM PST by freespirited

Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told POLITICO Friday that Herman Cain is “leaning toward suspending the campaign,” in the words of one, who stressed no decision has been made.

“He’ll probably get out, but nothing’s been decided,” another source said.

The one-time leader in the Republican presidential polls is scheduled to address supporters at the opening of his Georgia state headquarters Saturday. He was set to meet with his wife Friday to discuss the future of his candidacy at the end of a week at which he and aides repeatedly said he was “reassessing” his candidacy.

Cain himself has sounded conflicted about the decision, saying in interviews this week that he was eager to spare his wife and family any further pain. But at events in Michigan, Ohio and South Carolina this week, he’s taken a defiant tone.

The source cited the toll the period that began on Oct. 30 has taken on his family — something Cain has discussed publicly over the last few days.

The two options he’s weighing are “continuing forward with the campaign, or suspending the campaign,” the first source said.

But Cain may still decide to fight, the source added. Either way, Cain has made clear he is not conceding the allegations against him are true, and also that he plans to keep fighting to clear himself somehow, although it’s not clear what form that would take.

What’s also become clear is that some of Cain’s advisers want him to keep going.

Cain’s campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon pushed back on the rumors that the candidate would likely leave the race, saying, “I don’t know where they are getting their information.”

Gordon referred back to Cain’s comments on Fox News on Thursday night that he’d make a decision by Monday and at a town hall on Friday, where he said he’d announce his future plans on Saturday.

“I don’t have anything to add from what Mr. Cain said in Rock Hill, S.C., and on the Sean Hannity program,” Gordon said.

Cain aides were preparing for a campaign through the Iowa caucuses as recently as Thursday night, when the candidate’s Iowa chairman Steve Grubbs says he met with campaign manager Mark Block in Des Moines. Grubbs said they even submitted a campaign mobile app to Apple for approval on Friday.

Cain’s schedule is filled well into next week, with plans to campaign in Oklahoma on Monday and to speak at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum on Wednesday. The national campaign also just launched the Women for Herman Cain group, naming Cain’s wife Gloria, as its head.

“We were planning the campaign for the rest of the month. We have a lot of work to do,” Grubbs said. “We’ve got all sorts of things going on, so I would be real disappointed if he did drop out.”

>> But man, you gotta get your facts straight if you’re gonna lynch someone:

Fair enough. (Although I’m not out to “lynch” anyone.)

relationship for 13 years (by cain’s admission)
payments over 2.5 years (source please?)

Is that accurate?

Concerning the destruction of the country, better that it should be done in one fell swoop, rather than by a thousand cuts.

+1 to this. This country is probably already to far gone to save. $16 trillion debt, $120+ trillion in unfunded liabilities, and God knows how many untold trillions our central bank has "printed" and shuffled to banks throughout the world in the past three years.

Only *drastic* austerity measures will save us now, and none of the candidates are proposing anything like what is needed. IMO, a currency collapse is guaranteed to occur within the next two or three years. When it all goes down, it's probably best a Democrat be in charge to get the blame.

Death by a 1000 allegations.
I’m as PO’d as you.

If, by improbable chance, Cain is guilty of helping out a ‘bimbo,’ and his wife forgives him - well I’m sure that Steve Croft and 60 Minutes will take about a dozen camera retakes where Herman takes Gloria’s hand, and they look America in the eye and say, “Mistakes were made.”

Wait, I think I’ve seen this movie before! It didn’t end well, and I had nightmares for eight years.

I don’t know about your state, Chris37, but I have the luxury of living in a state that hasn’t voted for a democrat presidential candidate in ages. I don’t have to vote for Newt or Romney or any rino, because the state will do it; and I can vote 3rd party or just go fishing and enjoy my personal rino rebellion.

no. My guess is it will be quite funny. There is enough material there for a good skit unless the writers are brain-dead.

I can only speak for myself here, but I may very well speak for a number of other people:

It's not that the man can do no wrong.

It's: What are our choices?

Let's just say for a moment that adultery is a deal-breaker for an individual voter on the GOP side. So that means Gingrich is out.

What are you left with that has ALL of these elements:

1. Conservative values, not flip-flopping.

2. Ability to LEAD this Country, including We The People, as well as Congress.

3. Ability to win the general election against Obama.

Who has all three of those?

Speaking again, only for myself, I don't care if Cain did cheat on his wife relative to voting for him for President. (I care relative to his wife and family, but not relative to my vote.) I am not choosing a candidate based on his sex life. I am choosing based on what I want the next President to accomplish.

A MUST READ tonight, for Cain fans (and even detractors):

Please Mr. Cain – Don’t Stop This Train!

If anyone has connections to the Cain campaign, please email them this excellent piece.

Source: Ginger White’s own statement, in video interview with AH Lawrence O’Donnell. One of these two videos (can’t remember which one, sorry):

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/45519034#null

http://thelastword.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/01/9153668-ginger-white-apologizes-to-cains-wife

Is that accurate? Who knows. It’s what she said. She also said the sex trailed off during that time. She didn’t explicitly say there was no sex during that 2.5 years, but it was somewhat implied.

>> Let’s just say for a moment that adultery is a deal-breaker for an individual voter on the GOP side. So that means Gingrich is out.

If that’s the criteria, then Cain is out too. But (for me anyway) it’s the LYING more than the adultery (although I’m not happy with the adultery of Gingrich and Cain either).

>> What are you left with that has ALL of these elements:
>> 1. Conservative values, not flip-flopping.

>> 3. Ability to win the general election against Obama.

As to 1.: Cain is a dissembler, and dissembling is not a conservative value.
As to 2.: Others have PROVEN ability to lead a state (Perry) and a Congress (Gingrich). Cain led a division of a food company; not chopped liver, but not a direct track record either. Too, good judgment is required to lead. Cain has shown major lapses in judgment.
As to 3.: That can be only conjecture at this point — for ALL the candidates. All of the candidates, frankly, have pros and cons. But an advantage to Perry and (unfortunately) Romney is their cash on hand and their robust ground game. Cain cannot boast of such. (Admittedly, neither can Gingrich.)

Lots of fake numbers being thrown around by liars and frauds on this site.

When the story first broke I has people swear to me here that it was Cain himself who sent the 61 texts to White.

I said over and over we didn’t know the breakdown let’s wait for facts and they said no they know it for a fact let’s hang Cain right now.

One day later it became clear the vast majority of the texts were FROM White TO Cain.

If lying is a deal breaker for you, then I suspect you may eventually end up rejecting all the remaining candidates by the time it's all said and done.

I found out this year that my husband has been helping a gal who keeps coming back to the Ministerial Association for money, probably for the past 2 or 3 years. I found out because I was at church for Bible study when she showed up again. She interrupted Bible study to talk to him. I knew something was wrong when he rolled his eyes before going out to talk to her. Afterwards I asked who she was and he explained that she had been skipping about from one pastor to another, one Ministerial Association to another, and to the Community Action offices telling each of them a different lie. Nobody knew how to help her and she just kept coming. So he had been dealing with that for the past 2-3 years and had helped her from what cash he had on hand at various times. She was probably about 30 and was good-looking but he was definitely not interested in seeing her at all. They both obviously knew she was lying.

I suppose that makes my husband an adulterer, huh?
