Herman Cain Ends 2012 Bid
Reuters ^ | December 3, 2011 | DAvid Beasley

Posted on 12/03/2011 5:15:38 PM PST by lbryce

Former pizza magnate Herman Cain dropped out of the presidential race on Saturday after accusations of sexual misconduct overwhelmed his bid to win the Republican nomination as an anti-Washington tax reformer.

Cain's departure set off a competition among other candidates to win over his conservative supporters with voting to start next month in the race to determine the Republicans' presidential pick for 2012 to oppose President Barack Obama.

Cain, a former Godfather's Pizza chief executive, told followers in his hometown of Atlanta that "false and unproved" sexual accusations had forced him to suspend his White House bid.

He said he would endorse another candidate, effectively ending a roller-coaster campaign that saw the African-American businessman go from complete outsider to the rising star of Republican conservatives within a few weeks over the autumn.

Cain held a Friday night meeting with his wife, Gloria, who has stayed mostly silent as several women accused her husband of sexual harassment and an Atlanta businesswoman this week said she had carried out a 13-year affair with him.

Gloria Cain appeared at his side on Saturday and smiled throughout.

Cain's departure shapes the wide-open Republican race more clearly into a matchup between former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and surging rival Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House of Representatives.

Reuters/Ipsos poll data released this week showed Gingrich and Romney would benefit most if Cain quit.

Support for Romney and Gingrich would rise by 3 percentage points each, against the 1- or 2-point bumps Cain's departure would give some of their rivals for the nomination.

Gingrich, a fellow Georgian, said he would meet with Cain next week.

"I don't anticipate anything," CNN reported Gingrich as saying. Cain has to "make up his own mind," Gingrich said.

Cain, 65, said a "cloud of doubt" had settled over his campaign. He insisted that accusations he sexually harassed several women and had an affair with Atlanta businesswoman Ginger White were simply not true. These so-called "accusers" will slink back into the swamp from whence they came and that will be the end of it. Was Cain even remotely guilty of any of the assertions made against him? It remains to be seen.

I despise these nasty politics in running for office. If had my wish the Dem, Repub and all parties would be eliminated.
Let every candidate and politician run as an independant. Towing the party line has been disastrous for the nation. George Washington had the correct instincts on this and history has proven him correct.

Actually Cain did not say he quit. He said the campaign is suspended. Not sure what that means, but it is a meanigful difference to what is being reported.

Sounds like he’s trying to keep his options open.

He can continue to fund raise (such as it is), get SS protection and essentially do a controlled shutdown over the length of time he needs.

I presume this will rule out any chance of Cain as VP. Bah.

I had hoped that his candidacy would continue, but the bimbos just kept erupting. The last one was a doozy. And so the conventional wisdom that a political novice cannot survive the scrutiny of a presidential campaign is vindicated.

Can't wait for the MSM to assert that Republicans abandoned Cain because they finally noticed that he was black.

No, it's the end. The word "suspending" is for legal reasons - it allows him to raise money, pay off his debts, etc.

Cain made clear he will be endorsing another candidate very soon.

If you are a CONSERVATIVE minority, or woman, the dirty political leftist machine will keep throwing mud at you until you must quit. Take a look at Cain, Palin, Estrada, Bachmann and Justice Thomas.

Well, yes and no. A political novice is very unlikely to ever win the nomination because...well...they don't have the political skills and polish to attract enough support. On the other hand, if a charismatic and well learned novice candidate hit the scene who did NOT have piles of skeletons in his/her closet then they'd at least have a chance. Cain's problem is he can't adequately defend himself against the bimbo eruptions because apparently there is some truth to them.

I'm just waiting for the war. Nothing will change until it comes. On that score, Obama is an ally of mine because he brings the war closer.

Sorry, the liberal media did not destroy Cain. He destroyed himself. He never should have entered the race knowing what was in his closet. He is the conservative version of John Edwards. The charges are “unproved”? Come on, I expect that kind of language from Hillary Clinton (”There is no proof I did anything wrong”), not an innocent Republican.

I liked Cain and was very close to sending him money. Now I’m mad that he took oxygen away from the other Republican candidates. He gave conservatives a black eye and the libs a hammer to beat us with (”they all do it, we are just like them”).

Thomas was innocent and did not quit. He’s on the Supreme Court. Palin did not quit because of the press. She quit because of the stupid ethics law in Alaska. Bachmann self-destructed with her numerous flubs and turned nasty on the other conservatives. She did it to herself.

I really don’t expect hero worship from conservatives. We should look at candidates objectively and take the best. Cain was not well prepared to run, as became more apparent as time went on. His admitted relationship with this disturbed women was bound to come out. So glad it came out now and not after he got the nomination.

Lesson 1. No proof or evidence is any longer required. All that matters is that the accusations have have been made

LOL. You should know, you are the ultimate bot with your endless spamming the same stuff over and over again.

There was no skeleton in Cain's closet.

Are you really this naive? Seriously? Cain dropped out. He did so because he couldn't defend himself. He couldn't defend himself because something about the accusations against him were true. Nobody who did nothing wrong quits a political campaign over stuff like this. When Hannity suggested investigating the specifics, Cain started in with this whole "Let's not play detective right now". If you can't figure out what that means, you are beyond help.

Hey Johnnie, I can very safely say that I do not care what you think at all. Not even a little. Your posts are the single worst on FR. You are a spambot and a wanna be internet bully, and most of your comments are nothing but venom directed at other members.

Your candidate dropped out because he could not defend himself. He could not defend himself because there is something he does not want to discuss or admit to. No one drops out of a presidential campaign because of random sexual allegations tossed at them. If some random dude claimed an affair with Bachmann, she would laugh it off and it would get no traction. Why? Because if she did nothing wrong she could easily defend herself. When Nikki Haley ran for Governor of SC she was attacked with these same sort of affair charges. She took them on directly and had no fear of investigations, private detectives, etc, etc. She did not drop out, she won. Cain could not do the same.

Cain stayed after the three accusations. He seemed confident. Not the last one. When it's out that he has been providing 'help' to the woman without telling the wife, he is finished.

No doubt that the MSM tried to get him. Regardless whether there was an affair or not, Cain did this to himself when he thought such action wouldn't be an issue in presidential campaign. He should have cleaned up his closet of anything that might have been an issue and came clean to his wife ad his advisers before he ran.

Johnnie, your candidate failed. Period. It's over. Stop with the spam and venom. No one drops out of a presidential campaign because of unfounded accusations. Cain wanted the scrutiny of his private life to stop, and that is because there is something going on that he could not defend and get past. There is no way around it. If it didn't come out now, it would have later. Quit with the crying and whining and move on.

Waaaaaah, my candidate failed the vetting process. Johnnie, your candidate dropped out voluntarily. He quit. It's over. He couldn't handle the scrutiny. He dropped out precisely because he couldn't handle the scrutiny. If someone accused me of cheating on my wife, it would be easy for me to defend myself. I wouldn't tell Sean Hannity that "it’s not time to play detective". I'd WANT a full investigation, because I know I didn't do anything wrong.
