Herman Cain Ends 2012 Bid
Reuters ^ | December 3, 2011 | DAvid Beasley

Posted on 12/03/2011 5:15:38 PM PST by lbryce

Former pizza magnate Herman Cain dropped out of the presidential race on Saturday after accusations of sexual misconduct overwhelmed his bid to win the Republican nomination as an anti-Washington tax reformer.

Cain's departure set off a competition among other candidates to win over his conservative supporters with voting to start next month in the race to determine the Republicans' presidential pick for 2012 to oppose President Barack Obama.

Cain, a former Godfather's Pizza chief executive, told followers in his hometown of Atlanta that "false and unproved" sexual accusations had forced him to suspend his White House bid.

He said he would endorse another candidate, effectively ending a roller-coaster campaign that saw the African-American businessman go from complete outsider to the rising star of Republican conservatives within a few weeks over the autumn.

Cain held a Friday night meeting with his wife, Gloria, who has stayed mostly silent as several women accused her husband of sexual harassment and an Atlanta businesswoman this week said she had carried out a 13-year affair with him.

Gloria Cain appeared at his side on Saturday and smiled throughout.

Cain's departure shapes the wide-open Republican race more clearly into a matchup between former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and surging rival Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House of Representatives.

Reuters/Ipsos poll data released this week showed Gingrich and Romney would benefit most if Cain quit.

Support for Romney and Gingrich would rise by 3 percentage points each, against the 1- or 2-point bumps Cain's departure would give some of their rivals for the nomination.

Gingrich, a fellow Georgian, said he would meet with Cain next week.

"I don't anticipate anything," CNN reported Gingrich as saying. Cain has to "make up his own mind," Gingrich said.

And so the conventional wisdom that a political novice cannot survive the scrutiny of a presidential campaign is vindicated.

Well, yes and no. A political novice is very unlikely to ever win the nomination because...well...they don't have the political skills and polish to attract enough support. On the other hand, if a charismatic and well learned novice candidate hit the scene who did NOT have piles of skeletons in his/her closet then they'd at least have a chance. Cain's problem is he can't adequately defend himself against the bimbo eruptions because apparently there is some truth to them.

My brother tells me today he could see Obama and Axelrod high-fiving each other, doing the rap-gangsta walk with the faux gang hand signs going “Yeeaahuh boyeeee” to each other when they heard about Cain dropping out, and I was like Ugh! Dude, do not put that image in my head because I can see it way too clearly considering those two SOBs.

So you will sit it out and allow Barry to ruin this county more than he has? The more that take their ball and go home because they don't have the “perfect” candidate the easier for the obama it will be. Well it is still a free country do as you see fit.

Hopefully he will get a good position in the new Republican Administration. His experience is business is sorely needed in DC.

I'm not looking for the "perfect" candidate that's why I would have voted for Cain. I'll be damned if I vote for a RHINO.

For me, the electoral process is completely dead. It's just a game -- and the deck is stacked.

I'm just waiting for the war. Nothing will change until it comes. On that score, Obama is an ally of mine because he brings the war closer.

Sorry, the liberal media did not destroy Cain. He destroyed himself. He never should have entered the race knowing what was in his closet. He is the conservative version of John Edwards. The charges are “unproved”? Come on, I expect that kind of language from Hillary Clinton (”There is no proof I did anything wrong”), not an innocent Republican.

I liked Cain and was very close to sending him money. Now I’m mad that he took oxygen away from the other Republican candidates. He gave conservatives a black eye and the libs a hammer to beat us with (”they all do it, we are just like them”).

Thomas was innocent and did not quit. He’s on the Supreme Court. Palin did not quit because of the press. She quit because of the stupid ethics law in Alaska. Bachmann self-destructed with her numerous flubs and turned nasty on the other conservatives. She did it to herself.

I really don’t expect hero worship from conservatives. We should look at candidates objectively and take the best. Cain was not well prepared to run, as became more apparent as time went on. His admitted relationship with this disturbed women was bound to come out. So glad it came out now and not after he got the nomination.

Anyone with ears on his head have already heard all the abominable lies dumped on Herman Cain. We don’t need them reiterated ad nauseum.
I am sorry that he did not stay to fight them, becuse now they have become stronger to bring the rest of us down.

there is some truth to them.

So smear bot. Where is even ONE shred of proof to back up your sleazy accusations?

You have been so pathetically desperate to pimp this smear. Don't think people are just going to forget your scum bag tactics in this matter

Sorry smearbot. There was no skeleton in Cain's closet. It is because of idiots like you that confuse accusation for proof that Cain left the race.

Lesson 1. No proof or evidence is any longer required. All that matters is that the accusations have have been made

Now that the political establishment media scumbags on both sides have decide “Accusation equals proof” these same tactics of political lynching will be used against EVERY GOP candidate for Senate and House in 2012.

So enjoy your Pyrrhic victory today morons. These same sleazy tactics you were so quick to embrace and pimp will now be used against your candidates.

Sorry smearbot.

LOL. You should know, you are the ultimate bot with your endless spamming the same stuff over and over again.

There was no skeleton in Cain's closet.

Are you really this naive? Seriously? Cain dropped out. He did so because he couldn't defend himself. He couldn't defend himself because something about the accusations against him were true. Nobody who did nothing wrong quits a political campaign over stuff like this. When Hannity suggested investigating the specifics, Cain started in with this whole "Let's not play detective right now". If you can't figure out what that means, you are beyond help.
