I remember listening to Drift Away as a very young child on the record player or maybe reel-to-reel on dad’s old Kanazawa stereo.

Sad day.

"Thanks for the joy that you've given me,
I want you to know I believe in your song.

Rhythm and rhyme and harmony.
You help me along, keeping me strong."

Who hasn't covered "Drift Away"…
Thanks Dobie.

Loved that song, “Oh, give me the Beach Boys and free my soul.” No disrespect intended, RIP Dobie.

Give me the beat, boys...

I always thought he was singing "Gimme the Beach Boys", and the song was a tribute to that great surfing band.

Nevertheless, Rest In Peace.

(try it sometime "Gimme the Beach Boys, and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock n' roll, and drift away...." it really works! ;)

Excellent song and a quiet, soulful man. The kind we could use more of.

Thanks for the time you spent with us.

Didn't that alternate version go like this? - - - "Gimme the Beach Boys, and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock n' roll, and SURF TODAY".

Drift Away was and is a classic.

In early 1965, our local AM rock blasters KRLA and KFWB began playing Dobie Gray's The "In" Crowd, and it became a local hit. However, KRLA was soon playing a different version, one which praised KRLA in its lyrics. I haven't heard that version since 1965.
