Tea Party members get behind Gingrich

He has surged to the top of the polls, having been crowned the latest Tea Party favorite by the movement’s rank and file. Newt Gingrich’sappeal is not universal among Tea Party conservatives, but for now he is their anointed warrior, boosted by his string of fiery debate performances filled with irreverent quips.

As Gingrich courts the group that will be so crucial to his success in Iowa and beyond, Gallup’s latest poll of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has him winning 47 percent of voters nationally who say they support the Tea Party movement. (More than half of Republicans consider themselves Tea Party supporters.) A month ago, Gingrich garnered 18 percent of Tea Party support, behind Herman Cain and Mitt Romney.

“Obviously, he’s really kind of taken over among that group,’’ said Jeff Jones, the Gallup Poll’s managing editor. “They’ve been casting about, looking for someone who is a better fit for them than Romney is. It looks like everyone’s had their chance and basically squandered it, so that leaves Gingrich.’’

The Tea Party support moved to Newt after Cain left ... These folks are new to politics and they know nothing about Newt’s past.

Wow. "These folks" huh?! Really now? It sounds like you're NOT one of "these folks". IMHO, every FReeper considers themselves a standing member of the Tea Party Movement (it's not a party). And I dare say we aren't new to politics.

Who did you say you are for again?

No kidding. Newt is a complete repudiation of everything the tea party stands for.

Newt was the primary architect of the Contract with America. Is there anything that better represents what the Tea Party is looking for than that document.

Newt was the featured speaker at NYC’s first Tea Party rally on 4/15/09. There were 15k people on the south side of Cit Hall park who heard him.

If he is so great, why didn't he jump to the front when he first announced his candidacy in May?

Good point. In fact I would ask many of his current supporters what they were saying about him then. If it has changed, why?

Good ethical government begins with us and if we don't hold firm to our principles, we'd be idiots to think our government will.

Newt is no Tea Partier.

Remember when Doug Hoffman ran for NY-23. That was a couple years before the Tea Party cranked up. It could be said that Hoffman was really the first unofficial Tea Party Candidate.

The GOP establishment, including the Grinch, abandoned Hoffman, after he beat Dede in the Primary. Neither party wants to see the rise of citizen/congressmen.

The Grinch is no Tea partier. Some Tea Party folks may support him. But the Grinch is not Tea a Partier. He’s a DC Hack

“After Iowa there won’t be anyone left but Gingrich and Romney.”

Many states changed the rules and will award delegates proportionally. All the candidates will have an incentive to stay on collecting delegates so they can be players at the convention. It won’t be anything like 4 years ago.

If Newt is the best candidate we can come up with we deserve to be stuck with Obama for another 8.

Since when do conservatives get behind the candidate that will finish them off just because he is in the lead ? Can’t they see that Gingrich is uniting the Tea Party and establishment wings of the Republican Party ?

I’m a Huntsman supporter but have lost more respect for this movement in the last few days than I ever believed possible.

Whatever. BS is BS.

Polls were wrong then. They are wrong now. Yet that doesn't stop the liberal press from manipulating them.

Money (or more importantly the lack of it) drives them out.

Bachmann and Santorum in particular are already in debt up to their eyeballs.

And, Newt betrayed the TP in 2009. My hunch is he’ll do it again.

Newt has never been known to be "faithful"

“It sounds like you’re NOT one of these folks”.

I was referring to the tea party folks who support Newt.

Palin summed it up well. Newt is part of the problem

She will endorse whoever leads against Romney and do it cheerfully. If Newt sustains, she will happily endorse Newt. It is we who will determine who leads and she will follow our lead, not visa versa.

Just a few days ago Newt said he wants to eliminate the EPA....and replace it with another agency.

Nothing but a big government hack who talks a good game.

It is truly amazing just how stupid people are.

People just don’t have a clue on who Gingrich really is.

Gingrich is a socialist HARD-CORE.

His lobbying firm on K-Street handled more than 100 million in lobbying money to get Obamacare approved!!!

He says he is a Roosevelt Republican...the very man who started the Progressive party in our country and a GOP president who didn’t think Americans should own property!!!

Once again the GOP is doing it again...with our nomination you get to choose from Progressive A or Progressive B.

This is our last chance. Make a stand!!!

She's also complimented Newt. IF Sarah Palin endorses Newt at some future point, would you support his candidacy then?

If they are not spending any, they don’t need any. And Bachmann is not in debt. She just had a fundraising event in south Florida with a huge turnout.
