FL GOP Primary: Gingrich 22 Points Atop Romney, All other Candidates Irrelevant: (Newt 45, Romney 23

8 weeks to the Florida GOP Primary, Newt Gingrich resoundingly defeats Mitt Romney, with no other candidates worth discussing, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters conducted for WFLA-TV in Tampa.

Gingrich gets 45%, Romney 23%, no one else is above 6%.

* Among those who describe themselves as moderate, Romney leads 3:2. * Among those who tell SurveyUSA they are "very conservative," Gingrich leads 3:1. * Among Evangelicals, Gingrich leads 5:2. * Among members of the Tea Party, Gingrich leads 5:2. * Among pro-life voters, Gingrich leads 5:2. * Gingrich leads by 20 or more points in every region of the state except Southeast Florida, where Romney runs 3 points ahead of Gingrich. * Gingrich's Favorability among likely Florida primary voters is now an extraordinary Plus 54. * Romney's Favorability among likely Florida primary voters is now Plus 30. * By contrast, and as a point of differentiation, Ron Paul's favorability is Minus 11, Rick Perry's favorability is Minus 9.

Anticipating that by the time the Florida primary is held, after Iowa, after New Hampshire, and after South Carolina, that some 2nd-tier candidates may have dropped out of the race, SurveyUSA asked likely primary voters who they would vote for if the only two remaining candidates, at the time of the Florida primary, were Gingrich and Romney.

In a two-man face-off, Gingrich defeats Romney 57% to 30%.

I know no such thing. I sincerely believe that Newt will crush Romney like a bug in the primaries and then with the ObamaCare-hating, Marxism-hating tea party and the vast majority of Republican conservative and moderate voters and like-minded independent voters will go on to defeat Obama and save or nation from falling off into the socialist abyss.

Do you not believe that the people you described above would not vote for Perry, Bachmann or Santorum if they were to be the nominee? Romney hasn't gained ANY support - the majority of the people have been for anybody but Romney. Do you think that the people you described would vote for, or stay home - to keep from voting for any of those three conservative candidates?

Frankly, I don't. I think that if we have the chance - why not put our support behind a real conservative. Aren't the polls really up to us?

I kno9w all the die hard Santorum/Bachmann/Perry fans on FR will say this poll doesn't mean anything...not a single vote has been cast!

But Newt has momentum like no other candidate so far. He's crushing 'em.

I say it's very, very likely Gingrich will be the nominee. If he should stumble...say or do something completely idiotic...it will be Romney.

Or even Paul.

But the others are totally and completely out of the hunt.

Of course they would. Anyone but Romney or Paul. I wish all the others well. I’m not holding any of them back. But, in the meantime, I will root for the leading non-Romney candidate.

If Perry or Bachmann, Santorum, et al, make it a three man race, that’d be great! None of them are perfect or without flaws, even so, any of them including Newt is infinitely better than Romney or Obama.

Except Romney. That Reagan-hating, abortionist/socialist gun-grabbing rat bastard is totally flawed and disqualified. And, being half conservative, half liberal, Paul is only 50% flawed but totally disqualified, IMHO.

That is never going to happen. Never.

Why don't you tell us who you are going to vote for in the general election if it's Newt and Obama.

This Evangelical visited http://www.newt.org/ and Newt seems pretty solid to me. He’s on target on everything I looked at.

He has some negatives and the press is probably looking forward to trashing him hard once he’s nominated.

Thanks. I appreciate your response. I just wish that people would give the three conservatives another look. As far as I am concerned - Perry, Bachmann and Santorum did fine in the last couple of debates. Newt is starting to come across with a little bit of arrogance. I do remember that it wasn’t that long ago Herman Cain was going to run away with it. Things have been changing in the wink of an eye.

The point that everyone is missing out on here is that Mitt Romney cannot win no matter who his challenger is. If people could get a grip on that, then we could get a conservative candidate. Right now, most are under the false assumption that Mitt is a threat and somehow needs to be stopped, so we need to pile on whatever candidate happens to be in the lead at the time. Frankly, it is a losing strategy.

Once we stop operating out of fear, we will recognize how non-conservative Newt Gingrich really is. Hopefully, we will recognize this before it's too late. Otherwise, we will have a repeat of 2008 when McCain was deemed the candidate to stop Mitt. That worked out well, didn't it?

I am hoping that the folks getting Palin to run will have a nation wide write in and get her in the position as President of the United States of America. It make sense that I vote for her in 2012 since I voted for her in 2008 as McCain was just part of the ticket. McCain only got my vote because he picked Palin and also he was a Veteran. Join me???????

id your evangelicalism not have room for redemption? A Christian faith that didn’t countenance redemption would be, to me, a living hell.

Thank you! Why is no one seeing that Romney's support has not grown! He is an extremely vulnerable candidate - most people do not like him. You are right, get that fear out of the way - and then people can give other candidates another look. This is our big chance - why settle?

What has Newt DONE (not talked about, willy-nilly, as he is wont to do) that earned him the ‘statist’ label in your estimation? For the most part, as I recall, his record in Congress was anything but statist, as is borne out by a 90% lifetime (20 year) ACU rating (vs. 91% lifetime for Dick Cheney).

Sorry, I’m just not seeing it. If you wish, please inform me of exactly why you think Newt is a statist. Thanks.

Clearwater, FL in the Summer is pure Heaven. The water is pretty much 85 degrees. And that's at night!!!

I would really love to go to the GOP Convention this year, but it all depends on whether I go on a mission trip to Slovakia with my church with the College / High School Group as a young adult leader.

Which would be stepping WAY WAY WAY out of my comfort zone.

If I don't go to Slovakia I really want to go to the Convention and I'd love to drag my dad along for the ride I think he'd love it.

I'd love if we could get some Free Republic 2012 T-Shirts though, to show we are a HUGE voting block!!!

As an added bonus, RuPaul is floundering down here in sunny Florida.

I’d like Bachmann to win the whole thing, but if that doesn’t happen, but I have no problem with Newt running away with it at all.

HOWEVER-—

Florida has its share of RINO rot, too.

Remember, despite the fact that we have only statewide elected Dim embarrassing the state (the utterly detestable Bill Nelson), we have had our share of mistakes. (Remember Charlie Crist ? No ? You didn’t miss anything.)

Florida is a very complicated place politically. North Florida is very Conservative while South Florida is very liberal. (Except for some parts of Miami-Dade, like Little Havanna, which always votes Republican without question
or hesitation.)

Well, Gingrich and Obama are a good ego match for one another, but Gingrich still loses on personal popularity. I'm not sure what's more amazing to me, that Republicans are prepared to make Newt Gingrich their 'conservative' standard bearer (if Gingrich is a conservative, than so is Romney), or that they'll do so knowing that Obama will win if they do. If this is just about not settling this time, and going over the cliff with the conservative flag flying, why not just go with Bachmann, or Santorum, who are clearly more conservative? Gingrich is neither conservative nor electable in my estimation. If you want a conservative plain and simple, go with Bachmann or Santorum, if you want to win, go with Romney...Gingrich in so many ways is the worst of both. Puzzling to me...

Post of the day.

I keep asking, over the last month or so, 'what's happened to this place?'

Data like firearm sales, opposition to obamacare, amnesty, etc indicate that those supporting the same are not likely to reach double digits of voluntary support from conservative voters.

Further, reason and common sense indicate that Paul, Perry, Bachman and Sanatorium are likely to get more votes then the any of the 3 rinos absent manipulation tactics such as herding via the same methodology used to sell man made global warming: “experts,” “studies” selective “data,” “consensus” along with profit motive to lie, no independent outside verification allowed, etc.

This poll fabrication scam is no different then the AGW fraud, same methodology. The goal is to create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Only works if you believe who you want has no chance and you have to support the lesser of evils to prevent an even worse evil from getting elected.

I’m sure many people are on that boat, but I think there are a lot of people supporting candidates because the polling is telling them they are the frontrunners. I think it’s still very fluid right now & still too early for people to say that it’s over for the three lower tier conservative candidates.

Cain fell out pretty much overnight. I think the same thing could happen to Newt, he’s an extremely unpredictable candidate - makes me nervous. Newt is not a person that anyone can reliably depend on - he has a history of that.

Well said. Despite O’s low polling numbers, despite the economy, despite his extremely weak leadership, there are just too many stupids and uninformds out there who WILL vote for him. This is not a slam dunk. Winning is the bottom line for me, and Gingrich can’t beat Obama. Way too polarizing: not necessarily on policy, but absolutely on persona. He’s abrasive, comes off as duplicitous, and is a total Washington insider. Not to mention that the media and the Jon Stewarts of the world will absolutely destroy him.

Interesting that evangelicals are big supporters. He’s flawed. But who else do we have?

Find the youtubes of Newt speaking at the Iowa faith and family meeting recently (the main speech & the question and answer session).

The other candidate's speeches amounted to a combination of a personal story and promises to appoint conservative judges. Newt was the only one that presented a plan beyond that. As he put it, he looked at ways to reign in liberal/activist judges and "appointing conservatives" was like 4th of his list of things to do.

He proposed that judges could be removed with a simple majority vote in the house and senate. How? You eliminate the court, and the judge goes with it. This is not theory. Jefferson and Hamilton did this early in our history. Their actions were appealed to the Supreme Court and held up. The consitutionality of doing this is not even in question. The Legislative branch has the constitutional power to eliminate any federal court other than the Supreme Court itself.

He also emphasized that the Supreme Court is only supreme over the Judicial branch, not the other two branches. The Judicial branch has no more authority over the Legislative branch than the Executive branch has over the Judicial branch. He cited several examples from our history where the Executive or Legislative branches disagreed with the Judicial branch over a constitutionality question, and the Judicial branch lost when it came to how the constitution was to be interpreted.

A lot of our social problems can be traced back to a combination of the Judicial branch overstepping its constitutional bounds, and the other two branches cowering in fear instead of asserting their constitutional rights. Newt is the only one in the race now talking about reversing that trend.

The problem with your analysis is that you assume everyone could settle on another candidate. That assumptions not true.

You consider Newt unacceptable; OK.

I would be OK with Perry or Santorum, but I would have serious reservations about Bachmann--just as serious as your reservations about Gingrich.

I'm sure there are some people that would have serious reservations about Perry or Santorum also that would make them uacceptable to them.

The point is, every candidate, even the "true conservative ones" is going to be unaccpetable to some voters.
