One of the more enjoyable spectacles out of Washington lately has been the horror of establishment Beltway Republicans that Newt Gingrich just might be their presidential nominee, having jumped ahead of Mitt Romney in recent polls. The cause of this is simple if often disguised: Newt is the opposite of everything they just know to be true.
Take for example Peggy Noonan, who pronounced Gingrich all but dead in May, noting I have yet to meet a Gingrich 2012 supporter.

Gingrich or Romney: McCain prepares to play kingmaker in 2012 GOP primary
By Alexander Bolton - 12/07/11 05:15 AM ET
Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP presidential nominee in 2008, is moving toward endorsing a candidate for 2012.
Republican sources familiar with his thinking say he will probably endorse his onetime political enemy, Mitt Romney.
There is virtually no chance, sources say, that he will pick former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who has surged into the lead in polls, stoking consternation among his ex-colleagues on Capitol Hill.
Asked Tuesday if he might back a candidate in the GOP primary, McCain told The Hill, Yeah, I think it would be several months later on.
This is a change from the senators stance earlier this year, when said he would not endorse during the primary.
His statements come as angst among Republicans in Washington is intensifying. Publicly and privately, GOP kingmakers have said they are dreading the possibility that Gingrich will capture the Republican nomination.
McCain would not say which candidate he is likely to support; later in the day, however, he qualified his statement to say he had not made a final decision about whether to endorse a candidate.
McCain considers Romney one of the most helpful surrogates of his 2008 campaign.
JMHO

yldsstrk, the more the establishment bashes my man Gingrich...the more I want to fight to defend him. The Tea Party organized just because we were fed up with the candidates pushed by Rove, Krauthammer and the msm. Loved Thatcher’s comment on Newt saying “he has tons of courage” Thatcher KNOWS true grit when she sees it.
>> I am not a Newt fan but if the establishment hates him (left D and less left R) then I will have to reconsider and perhaps support him.... >>
I think you have just defined phase 2 of the Newt Surge. Phase 1 was when his debate performances hit critical mass of people re thinking Newt and switching (aided by Cain’s problems too of course).
But Phase 2 is that now people have to realize that while Newt has spent a lot of time inside the beltway, he is NOT the choice of the beltway. And people are realizing that this is probably a good thing.
Whether or not you like Newt - and I fully understand why some do not - it is becoming clearer and clearer that he ticks more people off inside the beltway than does Obama or Mitt. Newt is not the establishment candidate.
>> Republican sources familiar with his thinking say McCain will probably endorse his onetime political enemy, Mitt Romney. >>
That should put Newt over the top!!!
Touche’...the man with the most Washington experience rightfully claims the mantle of the “outsider” courtesy of the terminally stupid GOP establishment. I don’t understand why every FReeper is not rallying to his charge.
he can taunt and ridicule Obama about it,
****
Ha ha. I just like the sound of that. I hope ALL NEWT DOES is taunt and ridicule Obama all the way to election day and thereafter!!
Those of you bashing Newt have bought the RAT koolaid and have been guzzling it down. Yeah, he was out-maneuvered by Slick and the Media. He has learned, which is something fewer and fewer folks seem to be able to do...our current pResident in particular.
Romney is now seen as another empty suit.
Kraut is having a hard time believing that he and Tokyo Rove together have not been able to destroy Newt. They are totally frustrated at this point. I am loving it.
“Losers for Romney.”
Put a dot org on that — great name for a website!
Georgia Girl...Kraut has gone sour:) ole sour Kraut..lol
In spite of the attacks by the mainstream press and establishment republicans, Newt is within striking distance of Obama. I have totally tuned out the Sununu’s, Talent’s, Coburn’s, etc., who are hellbent on forcing Romney upon us. The media of course, want no part of a Gingrich nomination because Newt will throw their crap right back in their faces.
One other point Byron York did not mention is that in either of the 2 polls, Obama is well under 50%. He is a loser unless some disgruntled moderate decides to get in and hand Obama a 2nd term.
Hiya Lady Lucky:) my fellow politicalholic... love the idea of a “Losers for Romney.org” ha ha ha ...Bachmann is praying for a Romney win so she can be his Sarah Palin:)
LOL, Rahsputin...can just see them all in a motel room together behaving bawdily!
I hardly watch FNC anymore with the out of touch pundits and commentators spewing rino, anti Conservative nonsense.
The Krauts, Wills, Tuckers and Perinos have no desire to get a pulse for what’s really going on outside of their beltway bubble.
We the People are not on their radar screen.
At this point in time we have 3 choices for President.
1. Obama.
2. Romney.
3. Newt.
Seriously who is more likely to undo some of the damage Obama has done? Romney? I don’t think so.
With Newt we have some chance that he will undo some of the damage.
To use Baseball analogy.
A home run would be nice but is probably not realistic, but a double is very possible.
With Romney the best we could hope for is a walk the worst is a huge strikeout.
LOL!!
If the illegal alien Obozo gets put back in as president the US is finished. But if someone else becomes president, who ever it is, will have the chance to be one of the greatest presidents ever by restoring and enforcing the rule of law. That includes enacting justice on those who have abused their positions under the color of authority and have so damaged this country by their criminal acts thus breaking it financially. When Bill Clinton was president he made a statement acknowledging the huge amount of money held in retirement fund accounts and how that money could help the country if it were available to the government. Kind of strange how things have happened to those funds since he said that.
FYI Newt is insider beltway establishment.
