Don’t Mess with Texas (at Christmas)
Townhall ^ | 12th December 2011 | Nate Kellum

Texas is its own place. Known for oil, cowboys, cattle, and distinguished swagger, it is the kind of place to which newcomers adapt rather than one which bends for newcomers. Not surprising for a place that used to be its own country. Thus the oft’ spoken motto, “Don’t mess with Texas.”

Yet Texas is a big place, and phrases like “remember the Alamo” and “Texas proud” resonate from Galveston beaches to Amarillo plains. And that’s a good thing, because right between those beaches and those plains, a fight is brewing that’s winnable, but which requires some backbone.

Case in point: the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has sent a letter to the Athens, Texas city council demanding it remove a nativity scene from the lawn of the county courthouse there. According to FFRF, the nativity scene is unconstitutional and simply must go.

It’s nothing new for FFRF, which enjoys spending its time bullying local governments all across the country. All that has to happen is for a disgruntled citizen to call or e-mail an outfit like FFRF, and its intimidation machine springs into action.

Once a group like FFRF begins to apply pressure, it trusts that the city, township, or county it is targeting will simply fold for fear of bad PR or to avoid the hassle (and expense) of going to court.

Texas schmexas. The same leftist liberals tried to intimidate the little town of Evans City in western Pennsylvania.
The mayor told them to “Go pound sand”. One thousand citizens showed up, blocked off main street and dared the leftards to try and take their nativity scene.
There's a lot of woods around Evans City and plenty of room for shallow graves. Leftards beware.

There wasn’t any bragging in this article. As Americans, we should stand united in this assault on Christmas and Christians.

But just to make the braggin’ issue clear, since you have the right to feel brag about where you are from, then why don’t Texans?

Good for Mr. Hall! I don’t know where Athens is in Texas, but it will be on our list when we decide to move.

The top 10% fills up the state colleges. People will move to smaller schools to make sure their kids make the top 10%.

I'm sure you're a good person because you are here. This is what I do for a living so let me give you some advice that you may not have already know.

I saw you posted that your son wants to get into UT Austin. The way to work the system and avoid the top 10% is to take dual credit his senior year. If his school doesn't offer it then go find a Jr. College and just do it yourself. Have him take English 1301 & 1302, History 1301 & 1302, and American Government and Texas Government his senior year. During the Summer (I) have him take College Math and then apply as a transfer student. He will get in. Plus you just saved a lot of money on tuition especially if his school has dual credit.

Never mind, guess that advice was a little too late.

“A few days later they arrested another illegal for driving w/out a license. again the Feds released him and he went home and raped and killed his 12 year old niece. That is typical of what we deal with in Texas, so until you rise up against the Federal Government and demand they come to Texas and defend your fellow Americans, you can shut the hell up about how we deal with it.”

You can shut the hell up about it. I’ve done plenty to demand the feds to defend America. You live there. Keep taking it.

Enlighten me, what have you done in Kentucky to defend our Southern Border other than criticize those of us doing it? Called a talk show?

I put on a uniform, pinned on a badge and strapped on a gun and had to clean up the messes caused by the failure of the US Government so I've earned the right to criticize those who have left us twisting in the wind and it isn't Rick Perry and the State of Texas.

You think Border Security is important then how about you throw us a bone and support the only person running who knows a damn thing about it. Who are you supporting? A current member of the US Government who hasn't done a damn thing? How about the one who wants to cause a stampede across our border by telling them they can stay if they can get someone to tell him they've been here for 25 years? Is it the guy who thinks the problem is Americans wanting to leave? Or are you just running around attacking everyone because your choice isn't even running?

We're the ones in the fight down here protecting our fellow Americans who think the problem with illegal immigration is that "brown people are stealing our yard work jobs" so how about you drop the Mitt Romney talking points and find out what the real problem with illegals waltzing across our border is because I will tell you it is NOT a relatively small portion of them getting $150 discount at our Jr. Colleges.

Bragging and thinking that you’re special or better than others is what turns non-Texans off about Texans.

We really don't care what you think.

Nice distortion of the article, by the way. Sort of an insecure and defensive thing going on there.

Bully for you. Be sure to make this speech in your sanctuary cities. They tell you what you will accept. Keep rolling over for them.

The Top 10% Rule typically only impacts UT and perhaps A&M as those are the two schools with the greatest demand and UT is electing to increase enrollment and moving to drop the Top 10% to the Top 8%.

However, students who are not in the top 10% or are in the top 10% and elect to go to other state universities can gain acceptance to Texas Tech, Texas State, UTSA, UTEP, UTA and the schools in the A&M system.

To say that the only way a high school graduate can gain acceptance to a state university is for him or her to be in the top 10% of their class is incorrect.

However, to say that the only way a high school graduate can gain acceptance to UT Austin or TAMU is to be in the top 10% of their class is mostly correct.

Their are exceptions to the Top 10 rule at UT and A&M and those exceptions include scholarships, both academic and athletic, writing a compelling essay, military service or having daddy write a fat check to the school.

I think my son graduated from Austin High in the top 9.0% of his class and top quite a few AP classes. However, there were times, that because of the Top 10 rule, he begged us to let him transfer to a high school with less outstanding academic standards.

“Dad, I could go to high school X and never open a book and I would graduate in the top ten percent. But at Austin High, I got to actually do some work!”

“That’s right son, now you had better get your ass in the study and crack a book.”

Look—I’m sorry for getting so bent out of shape. The feds are killing the Republic and it is obvious that hours upon hours face to face time with these people, elected or no, is a waste of time. They’ll do whatever they want.

I should have never got agitated—especially against a free republic fellow. (Wasn’t mad at you anyway just upset at the built up swirl of the country going down the crapper. I’m really tired of seeing it.) I apologize.
