Posted on 12/12/2011 11:58:34 AM PST by shield
Texas is its own place. Known for oil, cowboys, cattle, and distinguished swagger, it is the kind of place to which newcomers adapt rather than one which bends for newcomers. Not surprising for a place that used to be its own country. Thus the oft spoken motto, Dont mess with Texas.
Yet Texas is a big place, and phrases like remember the Alamo and Texas proud resonate from Galveston beaches to Amarillo plains. And thats a good thing, because right between those beaches and those plains, a fight is brewing thats winnable, but which requires some backbone.
Case in point: the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has sent a letter to the Athens, Texas city council demanding it remove a nativity scene from the lawn of the county courthouse there. According to FFRF, the nativity scene is unconstitutional and simply must go.
Its nothing new for FFRF, which enjoys spending its time bullying local governments all across the country. All that has to happen is for a disgruntled citizen to call or e-mail an outfit like FFRF, and its intimidation machine springs into action.
Once a group like FFRF begins to apply pressure, it trusts that the city, township, or county it is targeting will simply fold for fear of bad PR or to avoid the hassle (and expense) of going to court.

IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.
I hope the city stands up to them. The hassle and expense would be worth the fight. Break their bank.
The ole gal behind the counter said: "**** that PC bull****. It's Christmas." LOL!
Makes me feel just a little bit better about my local government. Not that I trust them with money.
I don't see anything to do with freedom from religion here.
Dont Mess with Texas? Right. And yet they took paying college tuition to illegal aliens and forced vaccinations. I used to have lots of respect for Texans. Actually put in a lot of faith that they could be the saviors.
Yes, Goliad...we should never forget that massacre!
This is an outrage! What freakin' business is it of theirs?
That’s those atheist for you and Yankees.
Contrary to what you seem to believe, it’s not just Texas. The small suburban Detroit city where I work has a life-size nativity scene complete with a manger that’s at least 9 feet high on the front lawn at city hall. They even illuminate it at night.
Bragging and thinking that you’re special or better than others is what turns non-Texans off about Texans.
Not one person ever got a vaccine in the State of Texas that they didn't want. He issued a EO so insurance companies would pay for it with an opt out. He got in trouble for not going through the legislative branch first. That was the problem. Not some Romney talking point.
As for in-state tuition, you're blaming us for the fall out of the Fed's refusal to enforce the law. In Texas we catch illegals, put them in jail and the Federal Government releases them the same night. A couple of weeks ago Dallas PD arrested an illegal for domestic violence and turned him over to ICE for deportation. They released him a few hour later and he went home and killed his American girl friend. A few days later they arrested another illegal for driving w/out a license. again the Feds released him and he went home and raped and killed his 12 year old niece. That is typical of what we deal with in Texas, so until you rise up against the Federal Government and demand they come to Texas and defend your fellow Americans, you can shut the hell up about how we deal with it.
Has this group attacked your nativity scene yet? From what I read, they go after any nativity in any state. They are after one in Texas City, Texas also.
No one was ever forced to have the Gardisil vaccination (assuming that's the one you're refering to). The legislature stopped that scheme before it started ... and rightfully so.
“They released him a few hour later and he went home and killed his American girl friend. A few days later they arrested another illegal for driving w/out a license. again the Feds released him and he went home and raped and killed his 12 year old niece.”
Do you know if both of these thugs have been charged with murder?
And do you know if they will be able to continue to take advantage of Rick Perry’s In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens program, or will Gov. Perry make them pay full price next semester?
You might want to get your facts straight.
No one paid college tuition to illegal aliens, they simply get the same in state tuition that everyone else does.....IF they can prove residence in the state.
No one forced a vaccination on anyone, either. Texans have the ability to opt their children out of ANY mandated vaccine by filing the proper form with the health department.
yes they have and one of them will be executed by the citizens of Texas for his crime.
And do you know if they will be able to continue to take advantage of Rick Perrys In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens program, or will Gov. Perry make them pay full price next semester?
That is an idiotic statement as neither would have been eligible to begin with. In order for an illegal to receive in-state tuition they must have attended high school in Texas for their last 3 years and to get into a State College in Texas they have to, just like the rest of Texas students, graduate in the top 10% of their class.
Students from other states are not put at a disadvantage to illegals, they are at a disadvantages in Texas because they are not Texans, just like Texas kids are at a disadvantage in other states.
“... to get into a State College in Texas they have to, just like the rest of Texas students, graduate in the top 10% of their class.”
That is simply false, as much more than 10% of high school graduates in Texas are able to go to a public university in Texas.
Or perhaps, you can cite a source that states that only 10% of of graduating high school students in Texas are permitted to go to “a State College in Texas?”
“they took paying college tuition to illegal aliens and forced vaccinations.”
RE gardasil - No, we didn’t. Do your research - even Perry said, “The legislature disagreed with the way I did it, they stopped it, and they were right”.
“Bragging and thinking that youre special or better than others is what turns non-Texans off about Texans.”
Here in Texas, we have a saying: “No brag, just fact.”
The top 10% is not the maximum limit, it is more like a minimum.
The top 10% of a Texas school get automatic admission to the state college of their choice. UT was recently raised to top 8%. It doesn’t matter what the SAT/ACT scores or other criteria, they get in.
Many others qualify and get accepted in addition to the top 10%, but for many students, being in the top 10% is so important they will transfer to a lower performing school in the latter part of their high school to rank in the top 10%.
Actually, it’s the top 10% who are guaranteed admission to a state school - except for UT, where it’s the top 8%.
Let’s get another thing straight. The In-State Tuition for “Illegal Aliens” is another misnomer. The In-State Tuition is for children born in Texas of illegal aliens. I don’t have a problem with that. If the children are born here, they are legal. We wouldn’t allow their illegal parents to receive the in-state tuition.
The University of Texas has so many applicants, that it can no longer guarantee that any top 10% can go to UT.
If they were born in Texas, they wouldn't be illegal aliens. I know we Texans like to think of Texas as another country, but it really isn't (anymore).
The Texas in-state tution requires to qualify, a student must have lived in the state for three years, graduated from a Texas high school and agree to apply for permanent residency.
At least a dozen other states have similar laws.
I may be a “Yankee”, but I resent being painted with a broad brush like that.
I have never disparaged anyone for where they live, and neither should you.
I have been to Texas (just this last October), and I have many dear friends there.
I have never heard any of them say things like that.
I am surrounded by Libs, but I fight the good fight up here and always have.
Yes, I understand that as I have a son at UT who had to bust his butt at a top Austin high school to get into The University.
You go Gal!
I wish I could tell you where I work. Suffice it to say, it’s a place where the Constitution and Amendments RULE.
Last week, I set up a Nativity set. For anyone who asks, it’s a Christmas antique from my childhood. I’m not telling anyone how to feel about Christ or Christmas (luckily, I work with Christians), I’m just decorating our office in the manner to which I’ve been accustomed. First Amendment Rules!
there you go!
it's called the top 10 Law
the only way to get into a Texas State College as a freshman is to be in the top 10%
You can transfer in from a Jr. College relatively easy. but the Top 10 Law makes it next to impossible to get in as a freshman.
You tell ‘em, Ms. B! Maybe those idiots in Wisconsin ARE trying to do away with Christmas, but it’s NOT every “Yankee” and I have many northern friends...you included, Sis....who love Christmas and want to keep all the images and lovely things for it and not be told by “outsiders” what they can have on their courthouse lawns and other local places!
It’s generally a libtard bunch who want to ruin things for everyone else.
No, Perry’s In State Tuition for Illegal Aliens is just that, In State Tuition for non-citizens who entered the US illegally.
No, Perry’s In State Tuition for Illegal Aliens is just that, In State Tuition for non-citizens who entered the US illegally.
Thanks for the link and the lesson on reading comprehension.
You stated, “the only way to get into a Texas State College as a freshman is to be in the top 10%.”
However, your link states:
“The law requires each public college and university to admit automatically any student who has graduated in either of the two preceding academic years with a grade-point average in the top 10% of the student’s graduating class.”
Now, can you see the difference between, “the law requires each public college and university to admit automatically any student who has graduated in either of the two preceding academic years with a grade-point average in the top 10%” and “the only way to get into a Texas State College as a freshman is to be in the top 10%?”
And yes, you must have good reading comprehension to be in the top 10% of most high school graduating classes.
We all know there is a difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee.
Ms. B is a Yankee, and a great on at that. She would make a mighty fine Texan.
That being said ~ I wish the stupid anti-religious idiots would actually read and understand the First Amendment (this goes for the same idiot judges who “interpret” it).
Amen! Well said! :)
There wasn’t any bragging in this article. As Americans, we should stand united in this assault on Christmas and Christians.
But just to make the braggin’ issue clear, since you have the right to feel brag about where you are from, then why don’t Texans?
Good for Mr. Hall! I don’t know where Athens is in Texas, but it will be on our list when we decide to move.
I'm sure you're a good person because you are here. This is what I do for a living so let me give you some advice that you may not have already know.
I saw you posted that your son wants to get into UT Austin. The way to work the system and avoid the top 10% is to take dual credit his senior year. If his school doesn't offer it then go find a Jr. College and just do it yourself. Have him take English 1301 & 1302, History 1301 & 1302, and American Government and Texas Government his senior year. During the Summer (I) have him take College Math and then apply as a transfer student. He will get in. Plus you just saved a lot of money on tuition especially if his school has dual credit.
Never mind, guess that advice was a little too late.
“A few days later they arrested another illegal for driving w/out a license. again the Feds released him and he went home and raped and killed his 12 year old niece. That is typical of what we deal with in Texas, so until you rise up against the Federal Government and demand they come to Texas and defend your fellow Americans, you can shut the hell up about how we deal with it.”
You can shut the hell up about it. I’ve done plenty to demand the feds to defend America. You live there. Keep taking it.
OK, thanks. You may have restored my faith.
I put on a uniform, pinned on a badge and strapped on a gun and had to clean up the messes caused by the failure of the US Government so I've earned the right to criticize those who have left us twisting in the wind and it isn't Rick Perry and the State of Texas.
You think Border Security is important then how about you throw us a bone and support the only person running who knows a damn thing about it. Who are you supporting? A current member of the US Government who hasn't done a damn thing? How about the one who wants to cause a stampede across our border by telling them they can stay if they can get someone to tell him they've been here for 25 years? Is it the guy who thinks the problem is Americans wanting to leave? Or are you just running around attacking everyone because your choice isn't even running?
We're the ones in the fight down here protecting our fellow Americans who think the problem with illegal immigration is that "brown people are stealing our yard work jobs" so how about you drop the Mitt Romney talking points and find out what the real problem with illegals waltzing across our border is because I will tell you it is NOT a relatively small portion of them getting $150 discount at our Jr. Colleges.
We really don't care what you think.
Nice distortion of the article, by the way. Sort of an insecure and defensive thing going on there.
