Government Shutdown Preparations Begin as Funding Talks Stall (Here Comes The Propaganda Plan!)
Wash Post ^ | 12-14-11 | Ed O'Keefe

The Obama administration is alerting employees to the possibility of a government shutdown if talks on bills to fund the government and extend the payroll tax cut collapse later this week.

With Congress facing a midnight Friday deadline to either pass a short-term or final measure to fund government operations for the remainder of the fiscal year, Cabinet secretaries and agency heads planned to send an e-mail message to workers by close of business Wednesday informing them that a shutdown could occur, according to multiple administration officials familiar with the plans.

In a statement, Office of Management and Budget spokesman Kenneth Baer said Wednesday that “There is no reason for the government to shut down.”Congress could act quickly to pass a short- or long-term spending measure, Baer said, as they have seven times already this year.

“We do need to be prepared for any contingency,” Baer said, which is why agencies were informing workers by e-mail.

“The Federal laws prevent travel without the security in place”

But who’s gonna come enforce them, if the feds are shut down? Catch-22.

I lost my contracting job this month when the 2012 budget cut DoD funding. It's not just Feds who are affected.

I wish I had warning. Now I'm scrambling to find a new job, with no Christmas celebration beyond church, and the certainty that I will not have the money to pay my bills in January because I have no income in December. My wife is legally blind and cannot work.

Some of you might have no sympathy whatsoever for anyone connected with the Federal government, even indirectly. Some would say it's about time for us to feel the pain the rest of America has felt in this recession. You're more right than wrong, but there are better ways to manage the reduction of the budget to avoid mass disruptions.

I'll keep people posted about the job hunt.

Well, too bad for you, but you had better put the blame where it belongs, on the dimwit party. They haven't passed a budget now in so long it looks like they never will, therefore the legislature has to keep passing temporary spending bills to keep things going.

The dems want people to think that the republicans are the ones to blame and the republicans need to start screaming loud and long about NO BUDGET being passed by the dems.

Exactly right calex59. If the repubs were smart, they would just keep saying that they will pass the payroll tax cut extension as soon as the Senate Dems pass a budget.
This would be using the Dems own techniques against them. They always say Repubs have to “pay for tax cuts”, so turn it around on them. Make them “pay for the tax cuts”, and continue to insist on “no new taxes” until the Dems pass a budget with real spending cuts.
Imagine what the MSM would be saying if a Repub Senate had not passed a budget in 3 years? This needs to be THE ONLY TALKING POINT uttered by every Repub at every chance.

I am so very sorry that this happened to you, especially at Christmas. Prayers and wishes that you find what you need and hope for this Christmas and in the New Year.

Ron Paul on the shutdown, the economics and more today.

You can ignore the foreign policy & election stuff if you want, but he is dead on the money & the politics of it.

>>How much money do we save if the government shuts down?

Not a penny - every time the govt shuts down in turns into another paid vacation for government leaches. Name a single time that workers didn’t end up getting back pay for the time out of work - doesn’t happen. Govt employees would *love* a shutdown around the holidays...more paid time off to enjoy the holidays.

Do you think I ever voted Democrat?

Only once - for a county judge - twenty years ago - because I knew the Republican was a jerk.

I vote conservative. Always have.
