The Obama administration is alerting employees to the possibility of a government shutdown if talks on bills to fund the government and extend the payroll tax cut collapse later this week.
With Congress facing a midnight Friday deadline to either pass a short-term or final measure to fund government operations for the remainder of the fiscal year, Cabinet secretaries and agency heads planned to send an e-mail message to workers by close of business Wednesday informing them that a shutdown could occur, according to multiple administration officials familiar with the plans.
In a statement, Office of Management and Budget spokesman Kenneth Baer said Wednesday that There is no reason for the government to shut down.Congress could act quickly to pass a short- or long-term spending measure, Baer said, as they have seven times already this year.
We do need to be prepared for any contingency, Baer said, which is why agencies were informing workers by e-mail.

I suppose TSA is high on the list so they can shut down travel?
I read about the possibility of Obama “Standing up to Republicans!” over the Christmas Break a couple of months ago on Kos, and dismissed it as fantasy. Yet, here it comes.
The Republicans have passed a budget bill, but Obama will shut down the Governement anyway.
What better time for it? Most of DC will be gone for the next 3 weeks, anyway, and the media will be bombarding the sheeple sitting at home on their couches for Christmas Vacation with image after image, and story after story , about those “Poor, STARVING, government employees, just living check-to-check!”
What’s a corrupt Democrat not to like about a chance to write a meme like this?
Tried n' true Christmas time strategy from the democrats, will the GOP run scared again?
From his lips to God’s ear.
How much money do we save if the government shuts down?
Why would shutting down the TSA stop air travel?
Is Obama going to take over airports with the National Guard or shoot down airliners?
Hey, I’d be more likely to fly commercial!
Without Gingrich to mishandle it, will the GOP still fail this time?
The Federal laws prevent travel without the security in place. Cutting down to fewer or no TSA agents means delays or no flights at all. By making it a Federal level responsibility, they added it to the weapons.
Boener and McConnell are well able to fail.
All I want for Christmas is a government shutdown.
“How much money do we save if the government shuts down?”
Not a damned dime.
Remember, Democrats DO NOT WANT a deal on the budget, they WANT to be able to blame Repubs for a shutdown, with Obama, Reid, and Pelosi parading around with their righteous, faked indignation for the next three weeks.
It’s all in how the media (the Democrat Party propaganda arm) spin it. Congress sends bill to President or the government shuts down. Democrat President doesn’t sign it: Congress’ fault for sending “unusable” bill; Repub President doesn’t sign it: President’s fault for not giving in.
What ticks me off is that you can’t leave these children alone for 5 minutes without them manufacturing some crisis that we have to pay attention to. Drama Queens, all!
I love deciphering propaganda.
Football ratings are going to go through the roof.
And hardly breaking news.
Government Shutdown. How many times do we have to put up with the “government shutdown” threat this year? Every time Boehner compromises, supposedly avoiding the dreaded government shutdown and resulting “propoganda victory” for the Democrats, three or four months later it rears its ugly head again.
Label it and demonize it;
THE OBAMA ANTI-CHRISTMAS SHUT DOWN !!!!
“I suppose TSA is high on the list so they can shut down travel?”
Maybe we can just travel without the TSA.
Agreed. The Democrat-controlled SENATE needs to stop sitting on legislation and hold a vote on the spending bills that have been sent to it by the House.
