Your attitude is the same one that had the Republican establishment give us the handsome, good-looking Dan Quayle. Of course Dan got railroaded undeservedly to some degree, but how did that work for us? I do not believe that elections come down to good looks alone. Personality matters more. The fact that Newt is the most effective communicator of all Republican politicians since Ronald Reagan is going to count for a lot.

“Before the war, people dismissed Churchill as an extreme loser. But, by using his rhetorical and communication skills to persuade FDR to enter the war Churchill literally saved western civilization.”

You don’t have to tell me that... :)

I consider Churchill to be the greatest leader of the twentieth century — even Ron Reagan would have to stand in his shadow.

Without Churchill, Europe as we know it today wouldn’t exist.

In another life and time, I remember posting somewhere that The West desperately needs “another Churchill” to awaken it to the dangers we face, and to steel our resolve to oppose and defeat that enemy.

Where is he? Or, she?

OK, so the national poll of likely voters puts Obama over Gingrich.

But, consider: We don’t have to win in New York or California.

Newt just needs to win back swing states by taking a little more than half of what Obumjob won last time.

The swing states are polling against the commie in chief.

It will be Newt vs Twit. Voters will wise up.

It was fully reported, it's not entirely liked by most of us, but at least he explained it in subsequent attempts rather than insulting us.

Hey, good luck to you, we're just not going to agree right now, but I doubt we're that far off in the end.

The reason these matchup polls are always suspect is because people intentionally skew them.

Rasmussen polls likely voters, and anyone who is not the candidate of choice during a primary is going to vote “nay” on any other candidate running in order to make their own candidate the most electable.

Just look at FR, for example, the most likely of voters. How many folks here would (or perhaps already are) say they would not vote for Newt Gingrich in the hopes of making him appear unelectable in the hope that their candidate will fill the not-Romney void? I would dare say a large percentage here would do just that. Mind you, it is not restricted to just FR.

You simply cannot use polls like this while a primary is still going on. There is too much meddling. A ham sandwich will start with 45% of the vote upon winning the GOP or DNC nomination - that’s a fact. It’s the middle 10% that is in question.

Mind you, look at the battleground states. Only two candidates sweep Obama in all of them: Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

Welcome to the United Soviet States of America..where the Pravda State Media “vet” the candidates to the pleasure and needs of the RinoCrat UniParty.

This “election” will be a non-election...featuring the state approved “candidates”-whose only distinction is whether they are black or white.

I will not vote for Obama or third party either.

But I have to stand on principle this time and will not hold my nose like I did when I voted for McCain.

I’m not looking for a smooth talker or smooth debater, I’m looking for a principled conservative who has a solid record.

That in my opinion is Perry.

Perry has been taking to Obama for 3 years already.
He has fought Obama (and Bush) on Stimulus, Tarp, Epa, Illegal Immigration and the list goes on.

If Perry wins nomination and goes against Obama, he will bring a huge contrast. Obama cannot debate without his teleprompter and is prone to gafts himself.

What will Perry tell Odumbo?

Perry will tell Obama he spent more (Texans) money and Texan manpower on the border than Obama did.

Perry will ask Obama why he ran guns to the Mexican Cartel.

Perry will tell him he created jobs while Obama lost jobs.

Perry will tell Obama he is Pro-Life and defunded Abortion Clinics in Texas.

Perry will tell Obama he got tort reform passed to help businesses hire more people.

Perry will tell Obama he cut taxes in Texas.

Perry will tell Obama he balanced the State budget.

Perry will tell Obama Obamacare was wrong and needs to be repealed.

Perry will tell Obama he supported Israel - Obama did not.
Perry has awards from Israel for defending Israel.

Perry will tell Obama he is stronger on the 10th Amendment.
Nobody and I mean nobody is stronger on the 10th Amendment than Perry.

Perry will tell Obama he is stronger on the 2nd Amendment.
Nobody and I mean nobody is a stronger supporter of the right to own guns than Perry. Nobody.

What’s Obama going to say? I’m a supporter of guns for the drug cartel???????????????

Perry has experience - Only Perry and Romney has experience in governing - you choose

Perry will confront Obama on job killing regulations.

Perry will tell Obama he cut spending in Texas.

Perry will remind Obama that he served in our military as a C-130 Pilot in the United States Air Force.

Obama will: I’m better because I uh uh um uh uh um uh uh um uh uh um uh I can work with foreign leaders?

Perry will remind Obama that he Rick Perry will NOT BOW DOWN TO ANYONE EXCEPT GOD.

YOU WILL NOT SEE PERRY APOLOGIZING FOR AMERICA EITHER!

Perry has had to deal with an international border that was suppose to be secured by the Federal Government on behalf of all the United States.

Perry has had to deal with Obama Administration that does nothing - except send troops to other countries.

Perry has had to deal with a United States Government that is corrupt and has committed treasonous crimes by running guns into Mexico to criminal drug cartels.

Perry has had to deal with a Supreme Court order that we educate illegals.

Perry has had to deal with a Homeland Security and ICE that will not punish violators, will not deport violators but instead puts them right back on the streets.

WHAT CANDIDATE has dealt with illegal immigration and with a border not secured by Obama?

WHAT CANDIDATE has fought tooth and nail with Obama for 3 years?

WHAT CANDIDATE has experience dealing with a 1200 mile border - they have not. They know nothing about it but
Perry does.

WHAT CANDIDATE has got laws passed to defund Abortion or made it mandatory that women get a sonogram before making that decision? Perry did. And now Obama is fighting back against Perry and Texas for doing so even while Planned Parenthood is closing down clinics here in Texas.

WHAT CANDIDATE got laws passed to require a Voter ID so that illegals cannot vote. Perry did. Now Obama and Holder are fighting Perry and Texas over this as well.

WHAT CANDIDATE created an environment that resulting in a better standard of living? Perry did.

WHAT CANDIDATE got tort reforms in place to get businesses back to hiring people? Perry did.

WHAT CANDIDATE lowered taxes, lowered regulations and fought against Obama regarding the EPA? Perry did.

WHAT CANDIDATE jumped in and helped Arizona in their fight against Obama? Perry did.

WHAT CANDIDATE put their constituents own money and manpower on the border to fight the drug wars? Perry did, Texans did and all the while Obama is running guns TO the cartel.

Perry takes crap from the Feds every day every week every month every year. And he still oversaw one of the best economies in the US.

WHAT CANDIDATE HAS BEEN HANDING OBAMA HIS ASS ALMOST DAILY?

RICK PERRY HAS.

That is why I am voting for Rick Perry come Hell or High Water.

Looks play a role but for a lot of people, if Obama just looks in the camera, says “I feel your pain” and just tells sad stories of little girls that will die horrible deaths from poverty and lack of health care if Gingrich is President, he’ll “win” the debate.

Between Michele, Rick P., Romney and Grandpa Ron, Newt is being hit hard by a sum of at least 40% of the GOP base... and a lot of FReepers who are to young to remember the mid-1990s or have not been following the debates.

Here’s an anecdotal example of how one Democrat voter I know is reacting to Newt. He’s a relative in his 60s who’s voted Democrat all his life up to the last election, but was a Hilary backer last time and I believe switched over for the first time and voted for McCain. He told me he isn’t sure if he’s going to vote for Obama this time, but that he likes Newt the best out of the primary candidates. He says he’s clearly the smartest one of the bunch. “Smarts” are important to liberals, let’s not forget. He says most of the other candidates sound stupid or are basically unelectable flakes. As for Romney, he just doesn’t seem to connect with him, and also feels like he’s an out-of-touch millionaire, sort of his typical view of the Republican party and why he doesn’t like them.

Bottom line, Newt’s intelligence is going to go a long way towards softening up liberals who love to bash the Republican party for being stupid, as we saw with Reagan, Quayle, W, Palin, etc.

Exactly. Also, I don’t know if the sampling skews more democrat. I find it hard to believe a valid poll that at this point has Obama at 49% with only 12% undecided. I would expect Obama at best peaking at 45% with a higher undecided.

Jedi . I have no argument with what you say . Remember , Quayle did serve as VP. I agree the election does not come down to looks ( except for 2008 of course). Lets face it Newt will be spending all of his time fighting the past . Effective communications are meaningless if they are not heard. I remember Sen McCain on stage running around like Yosemite Sam. Like it or not looks do matter to much of the general public. Newt does not have to convince us .

"Women will not vote for Newt" is questionable.

It is only conservative women who care and polls are showing that conservatives are Newt's strongest supporters just now.

Liberal women like morally loose men like Clinton who mistreated more women than Newt ever did. Clinton is revered by Democrats and "independents" everywhere and would easily win another run for president if that were possible.

Fact is: Newt's first marriage was the result of child abuse by an older woman. The second marriage did involve infidelity, but Newt has repented and so he is not unlike Reagan who also had a failed marriage -- that didn't hurt his ability to lead. It is said that Reagan slept with Nancy before they were married.

Both Gingrich's divorces were annulled by his church. (Not sure how the second one was annulled but that is what happened.)

Bottom line: Gingrich is a sinner saved by grace like all of us. But, we need someone who can fix our political problems and he is the best choice to continue the Reagan Revolution and start balancing budgets and cutting welfare like he did in the 1990s.
