National Review: “they lived long enough for us to see them become the villain.”
Redstate ^ | 12/14/2011 | Erick Erickson

One of our co-founders, Ben Domenech, produces one of the best daily reads in my inbox. It’s the Transom. If you do not subscribe, you should. And if you do subscribe, today you got Ben’s thoughts on the two big conservative endorsements for Mitt Romney.

I think he hits the nail on the head and it is very much worth sharing.

Today the Washington Examiner and National Review endorse Mitt Romney. The Examiner does so honestly and forthrightly – you can read their rationale here. http://vlt.tc/1k1 I disagree with them, but as I’ve said before, I limit my assessment of candidates to what they actually do, not what they say – others are of course free to take a different path.

But the Examiner’s approach stands in stark contrast to NR. http://vlt.tc/1kb Most observers presumed the magazine would endorse Romney again – they did so in Photoshopped glory in 2008 – but instead of just doing so straight up, they wrote an editorial which is 80% reasonable if severe criticism of Newt Gingrich’s candidacy and 20% insulting rant at the conservative base. The NR editors eliminate every other candidate with flippant dismissals, in the end deeming only Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum as possibilities other than Romney – two incredibly long shots with, at the moment, no realistic paths to victory. @baseballcrank: “Why NR thinks that Perry should be counted out of the field but not Santorum… indefensible.”

I dumped my NR subscription of many years over the last presidential run-up. There are other sources where I can read the few worthwhile authors who are featured there.

Lowry is a turd and makes no pretense of liking actual conservatives. He proudly disses the TEA party base as a bunch of yahoos. He is part and descendant of the wall-eyed, hemophiliac, Izod-wearing, old-money, sailing yachtie New England crowd of RINO Torries who should have been extirpated from this continent after the Revolutionary War.

The scales fell off my eyes when I found about the treatment that Christopher Buckley’s illegitimate child got from his father and grandfather. I burned all of their books.

Buncha toads.

I quit the NR during the last presidential campaign when almost every cover depicted Obama. They lost their way after Buckley died.

Amen to that!

I would say Buckley is turning in his grave but he was not a fan of cliches. So...I’ll just say RIP Buckley

National Romney Online (NRO) has gotten as bad as Fox News (We Romney, You Decide).

I am so damn sick of this. The grassroots has for FIVE YEARS said “NO MITT ROMNEY, just give us ANYONE but Mitt Romney (within reason) and we'll support them!”

What does the Establishment GOP and the GOP media do? They all circle the wagons and thrust the ONLY unacceptable candidate upon us: Mitt Romney. I have never seen this much uniformity from them.

I have always criticized people for talking about leaving the GOP rashly, or their arbitrary “last straw” stances, or refusing to support the Primary winner when the dust settles. Because of the fair warning the Establishment was given - and the limitless options available as acceptable alternatives - I will be among those changing my registration away from Republican to Independent, and voting Third Party this election - and I have NEVER done so before. That is IF Mitt Romney wins the nomination.

This is the last straw for me. It's not like the grassroots said, “hey, either you nominate ONLY Rick Santorum or we're leaving!” They (we) gave LIMITLESS options and only ONE veto: Mitt Romney. For the Establishment to forcefully thrust a HATED candidate upon us despite FIVE YEARS of warning and LIMITLESS alternatives is unforgivable betrayal. It is them kicking us out of the GOP without admitting it.

They kick us out by nominating Romney, they have only themselves to blame when the Third Party candidate we walk the pavement for gets 7-8% and costs the Establishment the chance to change Obamacare into Romneycare. Who knew they just wanted to take ownership of Socialized medicine, not defeat it?

Thankfully, the people on The Five and Red Eye don't all bow down to Milt. Shepard probably voted for Obama.

Lowry and K-Pez (or whatever she’s calling herself nowadays) are bootlickers for the upper-class Progressives.

Historically, the National Review served as the de facto official right-wing gatekeeper--defining the margins of acceptability for conservatives. "Extreme" John Birch Society and Joseph McCarthy-type conservatives were thereby banished to the fringe.

I think it says something when NRO and the JBS are on the same page regarding the “threat” Newt poses.

Not sure what.

JBS has always been a reliable source of inconvenient facts, but the NRO is a total enigma.
