Christopher Hitchens, militant pundit, dies at 62
The Washington Times ^ | December 16, 2011 | Hillel Italie

Cancer weakened, but did not soften Christopher Hitchens. He did not repent or forgive or ask for pity. As if granted diplomatic immunity, his mind’s eye looked plainly upon the attack and counterattack of disease and treatments that robbed him of his hair, his stamina, his speaking voice and eventually his life.

“I love the imagery of struggle,” he wrote about his illness in an August 2010 essay in Vanity Fair. “I sometimes wish I were suffering in a good cause, or risking my life for the good of others, instead of just being a gravely endangered patient.”

Hitchens, a Washington, D.C.-based author, essayist and polemicist who waged verbal and occasional physical battle on behalf of causes left and right, died Thursday night at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of his esophageal cancer, according to a statement from Vanity Fair magazine. He was 62.

Why is it that people go ad hominem (ie, “to the man”) and accuse the person of “judging/sending someone to hell” when we’re only stating the truth in God’s Word.

And it is stated REPEATEDLY that it is NOT through works that you receive your salvation. You are judged by your works and HOW you will spend eternity, but that is a separate issue from WHERE you’ll spend it.

“Christians should only reflect sorrow when a defiant one has entered eternity separated from Christ forever.....”

I think God would not necessarily agree with your statement.

John 3:36
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

As a believer, I still support anyone, atheist or not, who understands that Islamo-Fascism is the greatest threat to humankind.

>>Two assumptions in one short sentence. Wow.<<

LOL!! Actually, only one. Go back and look again.

“I’m not sure” means “I’m not sure”

After seeing a montage of Hitchens photos from Vanity Fair, covering his life, it’s obvious that CH’s atheism comes from his deep-seated marxism...and he seemed to taunt mortality by the smoking and drinking until mortality got the upperhand.
That said, one of the most interseting, stimulating segments I watched on CSPAN, many years ago, was the back and forth between CH and his brother, Peter, who writes for the Daily Mail and is unabashedly conservative...
it was brilliant!

According to the Torah, the Bible, and the Koran, God said all sorts of things. Here's a mental exercise: pretend just for a moment that there's a fighting chance that Islam is really the right religion. But wait! Can you be a Christian and a Muslim both at the same time? Well, you kind of can. Let me explain:

What Islam requires is that you say there there is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet. Well, since Allah is just the Arabic word for God, that's actually not a violation of your core beliefs: you just say it in English: There is no God but God, and Mohammed was one of his prophets. (Hey, maybe he was. There were LOTS of prophets. You don't worship any of them.)

Now there are other pillars of Islam, but there are loopholes for most of them. For instance, you can't go to Mecca because they won't let you in. As for giving to the poor and praying many times a day, you do that already! (Now, I know that muslims swear up and down that Jesus wasn't the son of God, but as far as the entry rules for Islam, denouncing Jesus ISN'T one of them. That's just one of those irritating left-over snippy-snips from days of old, like the Old Testament prohibition on certain foods and cloth.)

So really, that only leaves ONE THING that Muslims must do that Christians don't have to: and that is to pray toward Mecca. You don't really even have to get down and put your butt in the air like Arabs do... I'm pretty sure that's a cultural thing. Arabs have a thing about butts, as we all know. If you just did your praying in the general direction of the East, you'd be covered both as a Christian AND as a Muslim. This ups your chances of making sure you get into Heaven. It's kind of like buying both fire AND flood insurance, see?

So why don't you just add that one tiny detail to your daily devotions? Don't do anything else different... just, when you pray, face East. Why not? What have you got to lose?

Now you and I both know that you have NOTHING to lose by saying that Mohammed was one of the many prophets and facing East while praying to God, as long as you still believe in Jesus. But you won't do it. Even though you have nothing to lose. Ask yourself why.

Because some of us don’t presume to know the mind of God. HE and only He makes the final decision.

If you want to, that’s you’re right. I’m not.

Well, now he knows that God is real.

I hope his friend Dawkins finds out BEFORE he dies.

I’ve been a Freeper for 10 years, and I love Free Republic. But there are two contingencies on here I cannot stand: the teacher-bashers, and the smug Christians who pop up on threads informing us all of who is going to Hell.

I don't see a lot of teacher-bashing around here but I have to agree with you on the latter group. They are annoying as all get out. It's almost like they take glee in condemning others. I cannot imagine God being too pleased with these self-righteous folk who presume to do his job for him. Hopefully in heaven, he will have a special space set aside for them so that the rest of us don't have to spend eternity listening to them clucking their tongues and lecturing us on our shortcomings. I believe in letting God sort them out. I will just worry about myself.

THAT is God’s wrath. Are you God?

I agree with Guenevere, I’m not going to go all self-righteous. Hitchens made a choice and it was a sad one.

So, the Bible is useless, and we’re set adrift here without instruction, to do what’s right in our own eyes, and just hope that God shows mercy on us because we tried hard to be a good person.

Thanks.

I'm not disagreeing with your verse...

..but surely you agree folks can mourn for those who are unrepentant and defy God to the end....

..many Christians have brothers, sisters, moms and dads, etc. who are not believers...

..surely you would mourn for them if they entered eternal Hell.

My point is we are not to be gleeful or smug when a Hitchens enters eternity, knowing full well what angry and distorting words he thought and wrote about our Savior.

I truly hope the man had a deathbed confession.

'It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of an angry God.'

"smug Christians"

I back you 100%. Too many very smug Christians on this forum. And I consider myself a Christian.

We all realize that we were not there at his final moment. He may have jumped out of bed and even though he could not speak, he may have recited the “sinners” prayer. AND Obama might really be a Christian. All evidence says otherwise. We can only voice our opinions on the evidence we have. If you want to believe that Hitchens was saved at the last minute when there is no evidence that he would ever do such a thing, then go ahead. Keep on putting your teeth under your pillow, and leaving cookies and milk out for Santa.

Wait a minute...I’m one of the people who came on this thread and said “God rest his soul” No Glee at all.

So are you saying that there is no place in the discussion for CH finding out about God?

I have a problem with someone calling my Lord “My imaginary friend” as that poster did. If you find that self-righteous, then FR has really slipped.

I was told by a liberal “Christian” that that wasn’t what He meant when He said that, and that His dying on the cross was simply an example for the rest of us.
