Tea Partyers Not Keen About GOP Presidential Field
NPR ^ | Dec 18, 2012 | AP

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Just a year ago, tea party activists came roaring out of the congressional elections eager to shape the looming race for the White House.

Things have not gone as planned.

Turned off by Mitt Romney's style and evolution on several important issues, they have bounced from one candidate to another in hopes of finding a formidable alternative to the former Massachusetts governor to focus their enthusiasm.

After a series of disappointments — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and businessman Herman Cain among them — the anti-establishment movement has settled, for now, on a favorite: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, even though he has spent more than three decades in Washington politics.

With the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3 and tea party support fractured at best, some activists worry that the passion that defined the movement 13 months ago may become lost in the selection of the next president.

Infighting among conservative groups, a growing sense of pragmatism, and glaring weaknesses among the candidates have forced some tea party leaders to acknowledge their limits and shift their attention to Congress.

"I wish that we had coalesced behind one candidate earlier on. It's not because of the tea party movement, it's because there hasn't been that candidate out there so far that has stirred the passion — the fire in the belly," said Amy Kremer, president of the Tea Party Express. "Everybody wants to focus on presidential politics. I think we need to be focused on the Senate. That's where we really, really need to be engaged."

Lacking a presidential contender to rally behind, Kremer's organization and others have begun eyeing congressional elections that could shift the balance of power on Capitol Hill next fall regardless of the presidential race winner.

That chart should bury Romney in the primaries. I suppose that is why the flurry of endorsements from empty suits.

I’m not impressed with any of these people. But will say, Newt is slickest, and probably smartest person on the stage. Never thought I’d vote for someone named after a lizard.

Oh, Merry Christmas!

If Gingrich is serious about arresting judges, he’s helping Obama get reelected.

Six months ago I never would’ve believed that Newt would be our nominee. I was on the Cain train until the media destroyed him. Michele was my homegrown choice but I don’t see a chance for her now.

Anybody but Romney now. He’s no better than Obamao.

Lord help this great nation and those of us that love liberty.

This election is shaping up to be worse than 2008. I don’t trust Milt one bit. He will sell us out to the DemocRATS.

I’m not happy about the ticket at all. I’m waiting to see the fallout from the early stuff before I make my decision. It’s not Romney. That’s my last choice besides Obama.

I dont blame the Tea Party. They really have no candidate to support... They all flip flop and pay lip service. I for one do not know who I am going to vote for at this point...

I'd rather have McCain than Mitt. Mitt's talk is better than McCain, but his actions are worse.

Actually, I'd rather have neither one.

Well, like it or not, this race is narrowing down to Newt vs Romney.

And all you’ve got to do is look at their records:

Newt Gingrich: A pro-life Reganite who as Speaker of the House led the Republican Revolution, took the majority away from the democrats who had held it for 40 years, passed the Contract with America, cut taxes, cut regulations, cut the deficit, cut unemployment, balanced the budget (four years running), reformed welfare, blocked Clinton’s agenda, blocked a socialist healthcare system (HillaryCare). Not a bad conservative record.

Mitt Romney: A Reagan denying, abortion defending, moderate (leftist) Ted Kennedy ally whose crowning achievement is passing an Obama-like socialist healthcare system (RomneyCare), an achievement he still prides himself on today. He saddled his state with tax payer funded abortion, gay marriage, gun-control, liberal activist judges, budget busting big government programs, mandates against individuals and a destroyed Republican brand. Not a conservative record at all.

The record is clear, the choice is clear. If left to Newt vs Mitt, this tea partyer is all in with Newt. Don’t know where Kremer is, cause it’s a no brainer.

Mitt happens.

Never thought I’d vote for someone named after a lizard.

A newt is an amphibian, a salamander. For part of its life cycle it is green and lives in the water, for the other part it is red (called an eft) and lives on land. Maybe there's some symbolism there.

How does he define rogue judges? If a judge does something that he should be impeached for, I would think that is congress’s job or maybe fellow judges. We don’t need a Dear Leader to tell judges what to do or else. Obama’s sniping at the supreme court, outrageous EO’s, and tsars are bad enough.
