Before Hiatus, Perry Bus Tour Gains Traction

Today is the last day of Gov. Rick Perry's pre-Christmas Iowa bus tour. Perry will return Friday to Texas for a brief Christmas break, then it's back to campaigning.

The Perry campaign has called the bus tour a chance for Iowans to give the Texas governor a second look. As the tour progressed, Perry refined his message and appeared to excite crowds, and by Wednesday afternoon he had assumed the role of a political outsider, which he used at each campaign stop.

“We need someone who will walk in who has the discipline, who has the courage to break up that old system — an outsider," Perry told a crowd in Muscatine. "And I want to make this pact with you as I wrap up. I’ll have your back in Washington, D.C., for the next four years. God bless you and thank you for coming out here today."

Bob Wise came from Iowa City to hear Perry in Muscatine. He says he came to the event undecided but left a Perry supporter.

Iowa will have zero effect on the final results, regardless of the winner.

Yeah, well, Texas survived Ann Richards when the economy was good and there weren’t the problems there have been in the last ten years.

It took George Dubya Bush to get Ann outta there. The Bush bashers around here ought to at least be grateful to him for that.

His own mother didn’t think he could unseat the white haired witch.

[Merry Christmas, Psycho.

Condolences about Newt.]

LOL! Merry Christmas to you, and thanks! Newt is doing just fine. But if I were you, Newt is the last of your worries.

No, I’m not worried about Newt. He’s my second choice but reaching the top and then starting a big slide is not usually a good thing.

I’d rather have Newt than Romney, but why settle for Newt when we can have Perry?

Since we are such an insignificant number, why don't you go harass someone else. Or better yet, find good things to say about your candidate.

BURLINGTON, IA. — Rick Perry paused the routine stump speech he’s developed during his 44-stop bus tour of the state in Burlington on Thursday to honor a deceased Iowan and Navy SEAL.

During a string of slams on the federal government that have become common for Perry, the Texas governor praised the military. Then Perry paused, pulling up one of his sleeves to reveal a bracelet that reads: KIA 8-6-11 Remember J.T.

Perry, who had not mentioned the bracelet during his speech before, seemed to struggle for his words:

“I wear a — I wear a little band, matter of fact one of your Iowans, who was killed on the sixth day of August this last year, who was one of those Navy SEALS that went down in a helicopter, Jon Tumilson, to remind me about my duty to make sure those young men and women have the support they need as they serve on active duty.”

Tumilson, a Rockford native, was one of 30 Americans killed last summer under attack from enemy forces in Afghanistan. His death became well-known after moving images of his dog lying on the floor near Tumilson’s coffin went viral.

Perry met with Tumilson’s parents when they rode on his bus for a stretch last Sunday in Charles City, a moment that was not publicized. That’s when he received the bracelet, Perry’s campaign said.

I’m not saying TX’s success is all Perry. But it’s ridculous foolish to say that his long run as Lt.Gov. and Gov. had NOTHING to do with it and/or is irrelevant. Perry overwhelmingly (if not entirely) pursued pro-business policies in his span in office. You are just desperate to tear down anyone who isn’t your beloved Newt. It would be nice if FReepers didn’t feel the need to attack an obviously conservative, successful governor because he’s not their particular cup of acid. (You’ll notice I’m not going to tear down Newt, even though I have huge problems with him.)

Sorry, nothing is unbreakable. I think saying Texas is unbreakable is stupid. The right people can break anything and do it quickly. 3 years ago people thought the USA was so unbreakable that electing a super-majority of Rats in congress and a rat president wouldn’t hurt the country. Look at all the damage they have done in 3 short years. Think what you want but I think that Romneycare, Newt Gingrich style cap and trade or a host of other initiatives both of these jokers have supported in the recent past would have gone a long way towards breaking Texas.

Those national poll numbers don’t mean anything at this stage. Right now, the only thing that matters is where Perry is in Iowa, and you can bet your drawers that number is far north of single digits and growing.

I like Rick Perry and I like what Bob Wise said about Perry:

“He’s human, puts his pants on one leg at a time,” Wise said. “He’s not Washington, he’s Texas. And he talks the truth, he talks it straight. So if the American people will wake up and listen to that, rather than all the promises that we’ve been getting politically and not had fulfilled, then why not?”

I am with Governor Perry too. The more I hear him talk about our troops I know he would be fully dedicated to supporting our military.

I have heard enough flip flopping from Romney and Newt, and although I like Rick Santorum he needs more time to get better known. I will certainly fote for whomever wins the nomination but I hope it is Rick Perry.
