Hiker Sarah Shourd criticizes Iranian, American policies
SFGate ^ | 12/27/11 | Ellen Huet

Sarah Shourd, one of three UC Berkeley graduates that were detained in Iran, spoke out Monday against the Iranian government as well as American policies that she said kept her and the two other hikers in prison for months.

When Shourd was released in September 2010 after more than a year in prison, she thanked Iran’s president and Ayatolla Khomeini for her “compassionate release from detention,” expressing gratitude because she feared for the fate of the two other hikers, who were still imprisoned, she wrote in The Daily Beast. The two hikers, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were released in September.

In her article and in light of Fattal and Bauer’s release, she revised her thanks to Iran.

“Perhaps it wasn’t dishonest of me to thank the Iranian government 16 months ago, but now I can be more specific,” she wrote. “Thank you for using us to further deepen your own crisis of legitimacy around the world and with your own people. Thank you for laying bare your total disregard for justice, fairness, and human liberty.”

The average ability of Americans to exercise sound judgment and common sense dropped significantly when these three hikers returned home, but the average around Berkeley remained the same.

Two comments:

1) The headline is misleading as she slammed Iran mightily while she only made a comment about a U S Hose bill that prohibited low level discussion with Iran.

2) What on earth would possess a sane person to get within a hemisphere of Iran if they didn't have to be there?

Further trolling for her own ‘legitimacy’, interviews, a book deal, etc. Typical Berkeley-ites.

Concerning this person, I'd like to quote a song by Jimmy Buffet...........

Dung in lieu of brains would be an improvement for any imbecile stupid enough to hike along the border of two hostile nations during war time.

I hope she does not reproduce; her or any of these utterly expendable showboat ‘hikers’.

What makes you think a sane person was within a hemisphere of Iran? The article only mentions the Berkley nutjobs.

Sarah Shourd is a non-religious Jew who was working in refugee camps in Syria before her little Iraqi vacation.

If you noticed, when the two guys were released, her boyfriend was very vocal about how well they were treated in Iran, but the other young man was silent and turned away from the reporters. He didn’t want to have anything to do with what his companion was saying to the press.

The silent young man, was in Iraq to explore his Jewish roots. His grandfather was from Fallujah, or some other town in that area.

Well, up the street, here comes my garbage man.

His opinion on Iranian-American policies is EVERY BIT as valid as the hiker’s.

However, the anti-American, anti-Christian queers at SFHate won’t be giving HIM a platform though.

Maybe they should hike the DMZ between the Koreas...

At least they wouldn't come back complaining about stepping on the land mines still buried there.

Unless they were ‘employed’ by the ‘Company’ or one of its affiliates....

That was my thought when they were captured. Now, I wonder. Perhaps this girl is just good at it....

If I had this irresistible urge to go hiking in another country, outside of the US, I would give serious consideration to Canada. If I really wanted to travel, I'd consider Australia.

The closest I want to come to Iran is an antique Persian rug.

Let’s take up a collection to pay for a nice cruise for this bright young genius... Let’s say, up the Somali coast...

I really don’t care who they are. They are all unutterably stupid and I surprised each of them survived childhood.

They climbed 400 foot up to the top of a ridge to get to Iran. They were warned many times by locals not to go.

I believe they did so to meet activists and give them sat phones.

They are 3 lucky Berkely grads.

Well, it is an interesting adventure destination,
lots of motorcycle tourists visit from western EU.

However they first take the trouble to get a visa
and to enter at one of the land border crossings.
Beutiful country and hospitable people, but unfortunatly
mullah-ridden.

Never a good idea to accidently violate another countries
border.
