Skip to comments.Paul's surge may prompt a new look from GOP voters

The closer the first votes of the 2012 presidential campaign get, the more competitive longtime congressman Ron Paul appears to become.
It's a moment his famously fervent supporters have longed for. Plenty of others are asking: What's Ron Paul about, again?

Yep, he's still a moonbat truther who hates Israel.
Ron Paul is our McGovern or Kucinich, without the gravitas.
In their dreams.
Yes, SmithL, as a rock group once sang, “There’s A Moonbat Out Tonight”. Wasn’t a big hit, and I hope that Ron Paul isn’t either.
The danger with Paul is that he is not only anti-Israel, our one reliable friend in the Middle East (Obama got rid of Egypt and is trying to get rid of Israel, so they have something in common), it is that he is so much of an isolationist the he would allow our enemies to encircle us with hostile nations and bases to the point that we would not be able to carry on waterborne trade, nor even to keep enough of the sealanes opens to survive as a country.
If you look at the re-rise of marxist regimes in Latin America, after their having suffered serious defeats in the 1980’s and early 1990’s (Nicaragua, El Salvador, Peru, Chile, Argentina), now aided by Ecuardor, an emasculated Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, etc. then you will understand what I mean, and that applies just to our hemisphere.
The rest of the world is in even worse shape thanks to Obama’s cowardice and stupidity. All Ron Paul wants to do is to leave the field to our enemies who are growing bolder every day (Iran, Syria - no Spring there, boychek, Russia, Red China, North Korea, the Moslem Brotherhood and Al Qaeda all over Africa, and Red Chinese infiltration from Venezuela to Madagascar/Seychelles, and the US).
We need a leader who firstly, recognizes that there are these challenges, secondly knows who the enemy is, and thirdly, does something decisive about them.
Ron Paul is one of the “No-Nothing” offspring of American history, and would lead America down the road to destruction, with Obama cheering him on.
Ron Paul is the last free marketer left on the field. The rest are socialists
Shouldn’t you be outside spraying vinegar up in the air to break up the chemtrails?
So, that’s how you do it! And here I was thinking that I was laboring under a “systemic avoidance of reality!”
Paul’s standing up to AIPAC would likely win Republicans the American Jewish vote for the first time in memory.
I’ll let you review Ron Paul’s record on earmarks and then you can get back to me on his philosophy on the free market.
I already had my look. One look was enough for me.
Its an anomaly. Paul falls flat in S. Carolina.
If Paul were to get the nomination, it would end the Republican Party.
He’d get about 5% of the vote, and a third party candidate would get 45 to 55%, depending on who it was.
I won’t vote for Paul. The Paul-tards can take that straight to the Fed and bank it.
I think you’re right. At least you are unless the media full court press was able to sway an awful lot of people. The media would love very little more than doing that.
Ron Paul have a pretty good explanation about it. Earmark is better than allowing the Fed administration to decide where the money go
A real conservative fights the feds to do federal things only. He doesn’t do deals, than vote against them knowing that they will go through anyway.
If he was from Massachusetts, he'd have to be a bit soft to survive, but there's no excuse when you're from Texas.
But he does fight against it. He earmark the funding then vote against the spending bill for it. Its not his fault that the other gop vote for the spending bill thus allowing them through. So in the end, money going towards projects proposed by elected senators/congresseman go is better than allowing the unelected federal administrators to decide
He’s Jeremiah Wright without the tan.
Apparently, GOP voters can’t get enough of a truther, a bigot and a moonbat.
I’m savvy enough to know that conservative politicians cannot vote conservative all the time. There are times when am earmark will do more good, in the long run, than for it not to be done.
I’m sure that some of Ron Paul’s earmarks actually went to good causes. But you cannot be, consistently, one of the Kings of Earmarks for a long time and still claim to be against them.
Ron Paul is simply playing his supporters like a cheap violin.
Ron Paul is the guy at the end of the bar who babbles incessantly even after everyone has gone home and the lights are out.
If Republicans are actually supporting Paul in such high numbers in Iowa, it further shows the irrelevance of that state. If Republicans are actually supporting Paul in such high numbers nationwide, then the GOP has ceased to be a serious political party.
Ron Paul is never going to be elected President. Ever. Bank on it.
Ron Paul has some insightful economic views. But the world is a scary place and that is half the equation that Ron Paul misses. No one who is sane will vote for Ron Paul as a matter of self preservation. And I say that as someone who realizes retrenchment from foreign entanglements is necessary.
Eventually the Soma will wear off and Paulists will realize they’ve been had but not until too late.
The idiot will NEVER be our president. NEVER
Ron Paul is the ‘Jerry Brown’ of the GOP!
**If Republicans are actually supporting Paul in such high numbers nationwide, then the GOP has ceased to be a serious political party.**
If WronG Paul wins Iowa, the next Iowa Caucus should be held in September... AFTER the Convention!!
Most rational people like Paul less every time they take a new look at him.
RP is a whacknut. They WISH we would consider him as a serious candidate. The Dems only want him for fodder in their MSM- destroy-conservatives-cannon.
Wishful thinking from America’s enemies.
There’s no daylight between a black liberation theologist and Ron Paul’s world view. READ.
The problem with Ron Paul is you never know which day he will show up or which day the cuckoo bird will show up.
I don't think this crackpot has a chance either, but a Paul acceptance speech, or any speech he gave, at the convention would make for some very interesting tv. I think it might be the first time a speaker at a convention would get booed. Or at best, most conventioneers would sit on their hands. But you're right, Paul getting the nomination would be the end of the Republican Party. I won't vote for him.
Paul as Repub candidate would give Obama a sweep of all states in November.
Yeah, Paul is a hopeless moonbat with no hope of winning the Big Enchilada.
But people are desperate for somebody — ANYBODY — who holds strong views on the Constitution and a limited role for the central government. We want a hero, not another paper-shuffler! The Tea Party is eerily quiet, just when we need them to HOWL!
Besides, the media is actively picking off real conservatives and leaving us with second-stringers, again. (Remember John McCain?) Ron Paul is enough of a nut job to fit their requirement for a hopeless candidate that will insure a second round of Obummer socialism.
Any chance Mrs. Cain will let Herman come back out to play?
I posed a question on a different board yesterday, wondering what so many youth saw in Ron Paul, considering he’s quite strongly pro-life and not for any form of racial or social preferences. The answer I received from a liberal friend was they stopped at the “legalization of all drugs” part.

Perhaps if those same youth would apply themselves, only major in subjects that actually do have job potential (instead of ‘ethnic studies’, ‘gender studies,’ or ‘pop culture influence on society’) and started with community colleges or trade schools they’d have a better chance? Our daughter just graduated with a degree in structural engineering and had the job of her dreams in 2 weeks. We paid more for her parochial school education than for her college tuition (though far less than what the State and Barack’s grandma paid at Punahou).
Our son opted for a more difficult option, piano performance, but still is making more than the average college grad teaching lessons, doing accompaniment gigs, and the occasional church assignment while he waits for his applications for grad school to process.
Boy, that convention idea is a thought isn’t it. Wow.
I hadn’t considered that moment. It would certainly be a powerful one. I’m wondering if he would even get that far. Talk about your open revolt at a convention.
