Across the Washington area, black students are suspended and expelled two to five times as often as white students, creating disparities in discipline that experts say reflect a growing national problem.
An analysis by The Washington Post shows the phenomenon both in the suburbs and in the city, from the far reaches of Southern Maryland to the subdivisions of Fairfax, Prince Georges and Montgomery counties.
In Washington area, racial gaps in school discipline Study exposes myths about school discipline Most students suspended, expelled at some point Police presence in schools spur Miranda questions View all Items in this Story School days 2011-12 Get news, advice and more. Last year, for example, one in seven black students in St. Marys County were suspended from school, compared with one in 20 white students. In Alexandria, black students were nearly six times as likely to be suspended as their white peers.
In Fairfax, where the suicide in January of a white high school football player who had been suspended brought an outcry for change, African American students were four times as likely that year to be suspended as white students, and Hispanic students were twice as likely.
The problems extend beyond the Washington area to school districts across the country and are among a host of concerns about school discipline that sparked a joint effort by the U.S. Justice and Education departments in July to look into reforms.
Experts say disparities appear to have complex causes. A disproportionate number of black students live below the poverty line or with a single parent, factors that affect disciplinary patterns. But experts say those factors do not fully explain racial differences in suspensions. Other contributing factors could include unintended bias, unequal access to highly effective teachers and differences in school leadership styles.

I disagree. The parents are equally ill behaved. Did you see the latest example of the Nike tennis shoe thing? Examples like that occur all the time, and that attitude as well as the behavior run rampant across the country.
This sub-human mindset is not confined to schools, it is not confined to inner cities, and it is not only those below the poverty line. It is nationwide across the spectrum and is only getting worse.
What is needed is “cultural ebonics”, so that black students don’t have to follow the “white man’s rules and laws”, but have their own, which are based on no punishment for breaking the rules and law.
If my son was expelled for 1day for doing something stupid, he’d ask the principal if he could make it 3 days...the kid had a sense of humor and is today a loyal freeper...I think we all have a little rebel inside of us....
I’m going to move to the utopia of Liberia.
Nonsense! This is a NEA “talking point”.
Let's call the extra parents must pay to home or private school what it is: RANSOM! Parents must RANSOM their children from government control! Some call it jizya.
Children whose parents are unable to homeschool ( and there are many) or can not send their children to private school are under police threat to send their children to their government assigned indoctrination center ( misnamed “school”)
And...I see that you conveniently forgot to mention that taxpayers are under armed police threat to pay for this First Amendment violation of freedom of assembly, freedom to freely exercise their religion, freedom of press and speech, and freedom from the government establishment of atheism.
Next....In my county there are **no** private schools in my county or surrounding counties. The government monopoly cartel with its price-fixed tuition of “zero” has created such a hostile business environment that there are **no** private schools. Who can compete against “tuition-free”?
Conclusion: Government socialist K-12 schools are a human rights abomination that crush every First Amendment human Right of the parent, child and taxpayer. Personally, I hold every socialist school teacher who makes these indoctrination centers possible in contempt. I will not have them for a friend.
Good one, that belongs on this thread. Let’s make that a link:
Can I ask you what the alternative is? So far as I know, it’s public schools, private schools, or homeschooling. You obviously don’t like the former, and you want the other two for free! That’s classic liberal thinking for you. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of Americans support public schools as a necessity for education future generations. At the same time, if you don’t like public schools, you have the freedom to educate your kids another way - at your own expense, of course. That is hardly ransom, my friend, since the private sector, not the government, collects.
Perhaps you would agree that public schools need more local control - getting rid of the “socialist indoctrination” curriculum you mention. While basic education must be made available to all Americans, there has to be greater oversight from parents and the community, not the NEA.
Regarding the unavailability of private schools in your county, I would advise you to move - you are still free to do that. Freedom doesn’t mean getting stuff for free, it means you have the freedom to change your situation by your own means.
“These idiots and the media that prints thisthey try and see everything except whats right in front of their faces.”
Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not - Jeremiah 5:21
“Or is it a lot of black public union employees trying to deal with a black criminal class caused by Liberal policies promoted by public unions? We have met the enemy and he be us?”
Nope! The enemy - He be what he be.
What he “be” is URBAN FERAL!
Bad behavior on the part of Urban Ferals can be caused by a diet deficient in heavy metals.
Injection of lead has been found to cure Urban Feral Syndrome (UFS) in all cases where it has been applied.
Insufficient dosage will not cure UFS, and may even exacerbate the expression of UFS. The considered professional opinion of experts experienced in dealing with UFS is that rapid repetition of sufficiently sized dosages is necessary.
“Controlling for race and not fatherhood automatically falsifies this study. If they factored in women head of households I bet the difference would be nil.”
Might I suggest not betting the farm on your above quoted theory?
Black students risk beatings, or even death, if they are seen by other Urban Ferals as “acting white”. That so many black and Hispanic students are not Urban Ferals is proof that allowing government in to any aspect of family was a bad idea. Not to mention a Constitutional violation.
Can I ask you what the alternative is?
Those using our nation's socialized school system are horribly addicted to this entitlement. We will see the same in a few generations socialized medicine. Most of the population will be incapable of imagining life without it. They can't even imagine having private team sports or cheerleading for their teens. Even **conservatives** will defend socialized medicine in a generation or two and insist that it must be reformed.
So? What is the alternative. I suggest that we immediately make all government owned and run schools charters. We have a template for this: New Orleans. It can and does work. At the same time, I would fund all socialist schooling by way of tax credits. All citizens and businesses would have the freedom to choose a private scholarship fund of their choice that would issue private vouchers.
The next step would be to gradually reduce the taxes imposed on citizens for tax-funded schooling and increase the amount that parents would pay directly. Tax credit vouchers would be issued only to the poorest as is done with housing ( Section 8) and food stamps now. Eventually, all schooling for the poorest would be funded with charity. If Harvard can have an endowment of 35 BILLION and universities across this land with funds in the billions and multimillions, I believe that, as Americans, we do have the will and means to privately fund charity K-12 schooling for all those in need.
If our nation had never started socialized schooling it is possible that every child in this nation would now be receiving a tuition-free **private** education. (Please remember there is historical precedent for this.) Millions upon millions of Catholic children up until the late 1960s attended tuition-free schools staffed by dedicated volunteers. I attended tuition-free Catholic private schools, so did all of my maternal cousins and aunts and uncles, my mother, and all of my maternal grandparents. (**All** of my husband's family enjoyed tuition-free charity Catholic schooling. **ALL** of them!) By opening compulsory attendance, compulsory funded socialist schools government disrupted what would have been a natural progression of privately funded, tuition=free, ** private** schooling.
So far as I know, its public schools, private schools, or homeschooling. You obviously dont like the former, and you want the other two for free! Thats classic liberal thinking for you. /p>
You are correct. Public funding of private education can make private education an arm of the government. It **is** a serious danger that must be avoided. This is why I strongly recommend that the movement toward gradual but ** complete** separation of school and state be made immediately upon changing to a charter and tax credit system of funding K-12 education.
The fact is that the overwhelming majority of Americans support public schools as a necessity for education future generations.
First of all we must call government owned and run schools what they are: Socialist schools or socialized schooling. Mc Donald's is public. Anyone can buy stock. The service is open to all, at an amazing reasonable price, and with consistent quality. This is rarely the case with anything that is socialized. Government gatekeepers, who are always overpaid, guard access to the many socialized mazes.
As for the American sheeple who have been indoctrinated to expect and love their socialist school after attending them for 13 or more years ( and their socialized minor league sports teams), why are we surprised that they can not imagine a world without them? We will soon see the same with socialized medicine in a generation or two.
It is up to conservatives to teach others and to help them understand that a world without government owned and run socialized education is possible. Point out some of the successes. Show them the major cities in the U.S. with 20% or 30% or more of the students in privately owned charters and even more using vouchers or tax credits. Talk to them about charters. Show them the movie "Waiting for Superman".
At the same time, if you dont like public schools, you have the freedom to educate your kids another way - at your own expense, of course. That is hardly ransom, my friend, since the private sector, not the government, collects.
It is ransom. It is jizya.
And.... it is an abomination that parents and children who can not home or privately school **are** under police threat to put their children in atheistic government schools. These children must think and reason godlessly just to cooperate in the classroom. It is an abomination that any citizen be under police threat to pay for it.
Perhaps you would agree that public schools need more local control - getting rid of the socialist indoctrination curriculum you mention.
Simply attending a socialist K-12 school is socialist indoctrination. Children who attend our nation's system of socialized schooling risk learning that the government gives them tuition-free schooling by taking money ( under police threat) to pay for it. Geeze! It only took one to three generations of this to get a Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hey! If government can use its police threat to give kids tuition-free schooling, why not use that police power to get **lots** of socialist goodies?
Our nation's system of socialized schooling is corrupt to the core because socialism is corrupt! All of it is a First Amendment and freedom of conscience abomination no matter who sits on the People's Correct-thinking Control Committees. ( oops! "school boards")
It's like trying to cure cancer without excising the cancer. It's like fighting a raging forest fire with a water pistol. It's like throwing a grape a Jupiter. It's like trying to "reform" a Nazi concentration camp by rotating the chairs in the concentration camp board room.
While basic education must be made available to all Americans, there has to be greater oversight from parents and the community, not the NEA.
You have the audacity to call **me** a liberal? Huh? Where did **you** latch on this Marxist idea that one neighbor **owes** another neighbor's child any schooling? ( Let alone $13,000/year for it?)
Completely illiterate and innumerate people graduate from high school all the time. Somehow they manage in life.
And.... I have personally witnesses nearly completely illiterate and innumerate high school graduates learn at the community college, (in **two** years,) everything they should have been taught in 13. These kids are the same kids,( who just 12 weeks earlier,) their government teachers insisted were not capable of being educated. They still have the same crummy families, full-time jobs, broken homes, ADD or ADHD, parents in prison, etc., yet 12 weeks after graduating from high school they suddenly can learn at the community college. Amazing isn't it?
Regarding the unavailability of private schools in your county, I would advise you to move - you are still free to do that. Freedom doesnt mean getting stuff for free, it means you have the freedom to change your situation by your own means.
Cartel monopolies that price-fix a service at the price of "tuition-free" is CRIMINAL it isn't freedom. If a cartel of private CEOs did this they would be in prison in a blink of an eye. But...Down on the socialist Animal Farm government school price-fixing cartels sleep in the farmer's house. Price-fixing cartel CEOs get prison. OINK!
With this statement above, I would have sworn that you were a paid government school defender sent here to troll the Free Republic thread, however, your posting history doesn't suggest that. Therefore, I sincerely urge you to read up on conservative alternatives to forced-attendance, force-funded, socialist schooling. There is a way free from this quagmire.
Our nation's system of socialized K-12 schooling is soooooo much of a threat to our nation, that I fear that one more generation of this and we will have tyranny brought to us through the voting booth!
Yes! It is **that** serious!
I believe it is soooooo serious a threat that I, personally, will NOT have a government school teacher for a friend. If they can not open their eyes to the danger, then they are too evil, too stupid, too much of a sniveling and paycheck-collecting hypocrite, or too much of a Useful Idiot to have as a friend.
Truly Swiftian. Thanks for the laugh.
That’s the thing. Calling me racist, bleh, cos it don’t affect my experience or my education or anything about me.
I grew up in the phully in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
I saw it all.
I was “friends” with black girls who were on my side as long as it didn’t involve another black girl. Or boy. All bets were off then. They were open about that.
I’m sure some here would call me racist and they have and they can bite me. :)
No pollyanna in me anymore.
When my I met my husband at college, he was from an affluent suburb.. then he spent a summer in philly and his idealistic fantasy world collapsed. It was during the Mayor Goode, black mayor of philly, bombing of the MOVE people.
There’s a reason blacks aren’t shaping up, on the whole, and if it’s raciist to point that out, so be it. I don’t give a damn.
People, whites especially, worry about being called “racist” for addressing and speaking about these things. LBJ didn’t cause the black family to become non-existent...he helped it along for sure but his Great Society wasn’t the cause. It was happening long before him and his Great Society just provided them the excuse to blame others, esp whites, for their failure.
Culture, race, there’s a difference. There’s a reason immigrants of the past assimilated into our socuety and there’s a reason they no longer do.
I espeically like the self important cops trolling online trying to get us ignorant people to see the light. RME.
I grew up in the city back in the 60s 70s and 80s. There’s a resason my parents encouraged me to move out and a reason I did. There’s a reason I moved to a very affluent jersey suburb to raise my kids.
Like my parents, I wanted better for my kids.
The black people in this country had it a whole lot better than most others worldwide and most of the immigrants who came to this country and succeeded in the American Dream without all the laws giving them special treatment and them still failing! There is a reason they are still failing.
It’s not PC and it’s considered racist to say this stuff but I don’t care. It’s factual and it’s truth.
People refuse to see that.
Thanks for the complement.
Have a Happy NewYyear.
She’a juat another whiner. Don’t waste your time.
She’s not looking for solutions, just an echo chamber.
Her kids are adults now and one of them went to public school. She was ok with that of course.
Here she goes again. Beware.
Me! I will join you! I used to come to FR because it was such a relief to hear ideas and opinions that did not offend me all the time. Now I have to avoid reading half the threads because I know they will be offensive.
