In Washington area, African American students suspended and expelled two to five times as * whites

Across the Washington area, black students are suspended and expelled two to five times as often as white students, creating disparities in discipline that experts say reflect a growing national problem.

An analysis by The Washington Post shows the phenomenon both in the suburbs and in the city, from the far reaches of Southern Maryland to the subdivisions of Fairfax, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

In Washington area, racial gaps in school discipline Study exposes myths about school discipline Most students suspended, expelled at some point Police presence in schools spur Miranda questions View all Items in this Story School days 2011-12 Get news, advice and more. Last year, for example, one in seven black students in St. Mary’s County were suspended from school, compared with one in 20 white students. In Alexandria, black students were nearly six times as likely to be suspended as their white peers.

In Fairfax, where the suicide in January of a white high school football player who had been suspended brought an outcry for change, African American students were four times as likely that year to be suspended as white students, and Hispanic students were twice as likely.

The problems extend beyond the Washington area to school districts across the country and are among a host of concerns about school discipline that sparked a joint effort by the U.S. Justice and Education departments in July to look into reforms.

Experts say disparities appear to have complex causes. A disproportionate number of black students live below the poverty line or with a single parent, factors that affect disciplinary patterns. But experts say those factors do not fully explain racial differences in suspensions. Other contributing factors could include unintended bias, unequal access to highly effective teachers and differences in school leadership styles.

My kids are told by me to do what the teacher says. How can that be a “black” thing? And I know the problem gets worse for those problem kids when they get to college where performance ratchets up and nobody really cares.

If it's hard to click on the link, then here's some:

The problem is not that blacks are more frequently disciplined than whites. The problem is that blacks misbehave far more frequently than do whites. THAT is why they are suspended and expelled more frequently. Compare crime statistics for white and black teenage offenders. The discrepancy is even greater. Why should it be surprising that the group that produces the most criminals per capita should face the most discipline?

I don't see anyone getting all worked up about the fact that whites are disciplined significantly more frequently than asians. And no one should care. If asians display more self discipline in class than whites, they should need less frequent discipline.

Blacks have no one to blame but themselves for their behavior and the reaction it brings. But as long as idiots like Donna St George and her enablers at the Post ignore the obvious, they will continue to play the race card rather than facing up to their own community's fatal pathologies.

What a misleading headline and article. Why is the headline on the Washington Post homepage "Wide Gaps in School Discipline"? It's not a wide gap in school discipline, it's a wide gap in student behavior. I read this entire piece and nowhere in the article was ever suggested that this could simply be a result of African American and Hispanic students behaving worse, on average, in school than their white and Asian counterparts. I suppose the obvious explanation for the gaps--worse behavior by black and Hispanic students--would have been deemed racist and politically incorrect.

It's amazing that in this day and age, with a black president, black supreme court justice, black senators, black congressmen, black federal judges, black CEOs, etc etc etc people are still afraid to talk openly and honestly about the single biggest domestic problem in this country: 75% of black children growing up without fathers. THAT is the primary reason for the achievement gaps in education, for the income gaps in the workforce, and for just about every other gap between whites and blacks. NOT racism. NOT "unintended bias". NOT lack of "cultural sensitivity training for teachers" or any other PC bulls***.

Black Americans are every bit as smart as white Americans. The difference is most white kids grow up with two parents while the overwhelmingly vast majority of black children grow up without dads. Fix this, and you go a long way towards fixing all these various troubling gaps. But until we even admit that this is the problem and stop blaming "racism" for everything, these gaps will always exist. Racism will always exist, but it is no longer a leading factor in any of these gaps. Let's stop kidding ourselves and stop worrying about offending the oversensitive, and start talking honestly about these issues.

And I suppose the teachers and administrators in Washington are overwhelmingly white? This is the white establishment keeping the black man down?

Or is it a lot of black public union employees trying to deal with a black criminal class caused by Liberal policies promoted by public unions? We have met the enemy and he be us?

“Result of single parent homes.”

One cause among many; many are from a “culture” (though I’d say actually a “cultural vacuum”) that places no priority at all on education. Blacks from the “WASP” culture (some West Africans, for example) I’m sure are suspended with even less frequency than their white counterparts.

Oh, yes, lets make up a bunch of sh** to blame it on. Couldn't possibly be that blacks and hispanics break the rules at a far greater rate than whites do because they think they are privileged races that can get away with it, and because they blame whitey for all their ills.

You could make your good point just as well without the vulgarity. Let's leave that to the DU types. It's not really needed here.

peer pressure to NOT be seen or called an uncle tom means not doing well in school,.
And as the previous post says no father to put a child in their place as a youngster.
Mom has to work and the kid grows up on their own.

Typical Lib comment: I don't see the point of suspending students. What is it supposed to do, except get the kid "out of sight, out of mind." If the kid doesn't like school, suspension is a vacation. And upon returning, the student is that much more behind, making it more difficult both for the child and the teacher. And as a disciplinary measure, it doesn't seem to work. Surely there are better solutions.

reply by another commentor: Totally clueless.
We suspend and expel disruptive students so that those who are trying to learn can do so.

I plussed up the reply.

This is a cultural issue not a race issue, the poor black culture is a culture of dysfunction. The problem is not really in the white culture but is staring back at them in the mirror for poor blacks. Since race in America is a blurry ill defined thing based on pigment, since laws are strictly enforced to prevent discrimination, there is only decades of entitlement and government sponsored family erosion left as an explanation.

typically we will hear the age old conversation stoppers: It's different.... Your not black.... You don't understand.... You have to understand.... It's a black thing.... Your a racist.... ....all these are used to "stop" any further discussion to point out the obvious. You will see more and more stories like this as Odumbo's number fall....he knows he has lost the 95% number he got when elected. Apathy, has set in since the hopey changie thing didn't pan out and nobody got "free" gas and the little boy king got billions along with Soros (a white guy). While he can't say it yet (because I'm black) his brown shirts will have to delivery the message.

So if blacks are getting expelled at higher rates and black leaders are “getting involved”, can we then expect an apology for this behavior, which is a blight on society?

there are five time more blacks in the DC school districts . Even if you expelled all the whites, more blacks would be expelled.

Perhaps its because the blacks are slow learners who have yet to realize what the purpose of suspension really is. Apparently the white kids “get it” and change their ways.

Then add in the difference in numbers of blacks versus whites as has been previously stated.
