Gingrich Hit Hard by Iowa Mailers
New York Times ^ | December 30, 2011 | Jeff Zeleny

A prevailing headline from Iowa has been the decline of Newt Gingrich, who attributes the fall in his standing to a barrage of negative advertisements from his Republican rivals and their allies. The criticism on television is pointed, but the attacks arriving by mail are even sharper and carry a far longer shelf life than a fleeting 30-second commercial.

“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” says a brochure that hit mailboxes this week. If the message wasn’t clear, another postcard declared, “Old Dog, Newt Tricks.”

For all the talk about the confidence of Mitt Romney in the days before the Iowa caucuses next week, his campaign continues to relentlessly hammer Mr. Gingrich. While Mr. Gingrich and his advisers concede that the negative messages have damaged his candidacy, not everyone on the receiving end of the mail agrees.

Kim Reem, a Republican activist from Cedar Rapids, has been saving some of her political mail for the past week for The New York Times. Much of it attacks Mr. Gingrich, a tactic she said has not been persuasive.

“I haven’t had a piece of Romney mail on Romney in quite some time,” Ms. Reem said. “I assume he is making such big tracks shredding on Newt that he has given up campaigning on his own merits.”

But a poll released Friday showed that Mr. Gingrich has lost more than half of his support. He was leading in the NBC News/Marist Poll conducted earlier this month, but currently is backed by only 13 percent of the voters surveyed. He is in a three-way tie with Rick Santorum (15 percent) and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas (14 percent).

“Romney’s negative mail campaign tells me he is afraid of Newt,” Ms. Reem said. “And he should be.

Newt seemed to be the candidate postioned with the best GOP credentials from among the Republican pack, certainly in a way that should have differentiated him to his benefit, but instead Newt faltered. To those who've been puzzled by his poor showing this article reveals the strategies some of which contributed to his poor showing.

Every candidate has had a rise .... and a fall.

Why should Newt be any different?

Yea, that’s the anti-Willard revolving door for you.

Whatever happens, I’ll be glad to have heard the end of it. In fact, I hope next cycle they get moved to dead last so I never have to hear about the Iowa caucus ever, ever, ever again.

I’m convinced these ads are being put out by The Messiah’s people - they don’t know how to run against Gingrich and they fear him.

Very odd election, all centered on those debates. The whole process starts way too early.

Radio ads and mailers by Acme Backbiting PAC.

Romney tried to pave Iowa in 2008 with glossy brochures.

Rinse, repeat.

Robocall after robocall; a Paulista from a boiler room; press one for Mitt Romney.

Oh, and Ann Coulter, who apparently found Bill Maher a hunk, sound bites for the rebranded Romney.

While Bachmann's stooge ran off to Paulistan.

The Death Star allows only three choices, none conservative.

It is odd. I don’t think anyone likes the candidates ... not even the Newt supporters.

And, yes, way too early.

This isn’t the big game, this is just Iowa, a state full of folks willing to vote for Romney and Paul, making them look like a bunch of inbred idiots.

As Bevis and Butthead used to say, “Iowans are Cornholios.”

Oh yeah, here we go.

Gingrich Hit Hard by Iowa Mailers

A prevailing headline from Iowa has been the decline of Newt Gingrich,

"NBC News" poll. Yeah, right, it probably did not get out of the NYC area codes.

This is SOP communist agenda donk propaganda to create the atmosphere that all republican candidates are dirt-chewing hillbillies except mittwitt which is ascending to the heavens riding a magic carpet of halos and cherubs.

They know Mittwitt is the ONE jerk that the evil republicans will falter in turning out to vote for because Mitt is nothing but a "D" with a couple of fairly vertical lines on the bottom.

If ANYONE else besides Mittwitt gets the pubbie nomination jug-ears is a goner...

This clown Romney has been stuck on 25 percent since the thing began—and he trashes Gingrich to the benefit of only Paul and Santorum. But he’s too big an a’hole to figure it out. The Repuke insiders have hand-picked him at this point, and we see that he’ll just end up losing to Obama in the end,

they don’t know how to run against Gingrich and they fear him.

They'd better fear him.

Newt didn't become Speaker by waiting patiently for his turn, playing patty-cake with opponents or suffering fools gladly.

One of the reasons Newt gets a lot of grief from some former members of Congress is that he blew up the old-boys network. He bypassed people with seniority to appoint committee chairmen committed to moving his agenda through the house.

Newt went rogue before Sarah Palin knew the meaning of the word.
