Ms. Clinton Goes to War?

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 – by Staff Report

Hillary Clinton

U.S. to Help Create an Elite Libyan Force to Combat Islamic Extremists ... The Pentagon and State Department are speeding up efforts to help the Libyan government create a commando force to combat Islamic extremists like the ones who killed the American ambassador in Libya last month and to help counter the country’s fractious militias, according to internal government documents. – NY Times

Dominant Social Theme: These are necessary efforts in an unsafe world.

Free-Market News: It seems like Hillary Clinton’s very own terrorist strike force is about to become a reality. We first wrote about this back in May. You can see the article here: “As Commandos Raid Tampa US State Department Demands Power to Declare War.”

Ms. Clinton was attending a Tampa-based conference, “Building the Global SOF Partnership,” with representatives from some 90 nations. During the conference military from these countries participated in a drill that aimed to “rescue” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, supposedly kidnapped by terrorists.

The drill received a lot of attention in the alternative media but we found what Hillary Clinton was quoted as saying to be even more interesting.

We wrote at the time that the Secretary of State seemed to imply in certain remarks that the State Department now possessed the authority to declare a limited state of war via an expanding liaison with US Special Operations Forces. We quoted her directly:

... We created a new Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations that is working to put into practice lessons learned over the past decade and institutionalize a civilian surge capacity to deal with crises and hotspots.

Experts from this new bureau are working closely with Special Operations Forces around the world ... Our diplomats also saw that the UN staff in the region could be useful partners. So they worked through our team in Washington and New York to obtain new authorities for the UN officials on the ground and then link them up directly with our Special Operations Forces to share expertise and improve coordination ...

We have to keep our international cooperation going and growing at every level. Next week I’ll be heading to Europe, and I’ll end up in Istanbul for the second meeting of the new Global Counterterrorism Forum, which we helped launch last year. Turkey and the United States serve as the founding co-chairs, and we’ve been joined by nearly 30 other nations.

At the time, we asked, “Who has given Ms. Clinton the brief to do such things? ... Constitutionally, only the US Congress has the right to commit US troops to war.”

We certainly didn’t expect an answer but now we may have received one with the sudden creation of an “elite Libyan Force.” Here’s some more:

The Obama administration quietly won Congress’s approval last month to shift about $8 million from Pentagon operations and counterterrorism aid budgeted for Pakistan to begin building an elite Libyan force over the next year that could ultimately number about 500 troops. American Special Operations forces could conduct much of the training, as they have with counterterrorism forces in Pakistan and Yemen, American officials said.

The effort to establish the new unit was already under way before the assault that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans at the United States Mission in Benghazi, Libya.

According to an unclassified internal State Department memo sent to Congress on Sept. 4, the plan’s goal is to enhance “Libya’s ability to combat and defend against threats from Al Qaeda and its affiliates.” A companion Pentagon document envisions that the Libyan commando force will “counter and defeat terrorist and violent extremist organizations.” Right now, Libya has no such capability, American officials said ...

The proposed Libyan commando force springs from an unusual partnership between the State Department and the Pentagon. Just last year, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the defense secretary at the time, Robert M. Gates, agreed to pool resources from their departments in a fund approved by Congress to respond more quickly to emerging threats from Al Qaeda and other militants in places like Libya, Nigeria and Bangladesh.

You see? The big news here, just as we speculated five months ago, is that the US State Department is now directly involved. Rather than becoming less of a colonialist presence in the world, US officials seem to be moving rapidly in the other direction.

Conclusion: American citizens may not support such expansions but officials like Clinton obviously do. And they’re not asking permission.

Looks like Hillery wasn’t kidding

" I’m betting the White House is smirking and perfectly happy to be accused of having a breakdown in communication as opposed to the alternative."

Thanks for this and the other Pings. This thing is just getting started. Funny thing, the truth. It has a tendency to want to come out. As I've said in the past, all that's needed is for a few key blocks to be removed and the Ojenga tower of lies will fall, and spectacularly.

Candy Crowley, by virtue of her partisan antics at the last debate, has ensured that the subject will continue to be discussed. Benghazigate may prove to be the removed pebble that starts the landslide.

hillary clinton is as frightening as obama, (naybe moreso,) and always has been. She is evil wrapped in evil married to evil...a committed socialist/radical almost all her life.
A long time ago I brought up the fact that she spends, and has spent since her teen years, an inordinate amount of time in South America, and as a young girl, with Force 13 making trips to Cuba. No one ever questions her on these frequent trips. What is in South America that she keeps going there for?

Feinstein: Intelligence Mistake, Inadequate Security To Blame For Libyan Terror Attack
CBS San Francisco ^ | Oct. 17, 2012

Posted on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 11:19:31 PM by Free ThinkerNY

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) — The head of the U.S. Senate’s Intelligence Committee said Wednesday that it appeared an intelligence mistake along with inadequate security were to blame for the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American Embassy in Benghazi, Libya that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, a Bay Area native, and three others.

“I can tell you this, I think we do know what happened now. There’s no question but that it was a terrorist attack, there is no question but that the security was inadequate and I think that there is no question that we need to work on our intelligence,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) during an exclusive interview with CBS 5.

Feinstein’s comments came one day after a spirited back-and-forth exchange between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney in their second debate over the assault on the consulate. Romney claimed the attack was a symptom of weakness in Obama’s foreign policy.

“It’s looking like obama is actually going to try and pull off a hit. Suddenly, this guy is in all the news out of literally nowhere.....Don’t like the smell of this one bit..”

Agree. obama needs to do something to get the heat off the Benghazi subject (just as soon as get some results back from the focus groups).

In keeping with my birds/stone theory, another reason for this particular man may be to take attention away from the February 17th Brigade, MB, and even Al Qaeda, if they can. They need to distance Benghazi attack from the radicals/terrorists the Adm has been most closely aligned with.

Working theory is that this was not, or was *just* not Ansar Al-Sharia.

“On diplomatic paper the moderate February 17 Martyrs Brigade and the extremist Ansar Al-Sharia had nothing in common. In reality, the differences between the two militias were mostly cosmetic and the ***Martyrs Brigade had been contacted ahead of time by an Al Qaeda politician and asked to stand down*** while the attack took place.”

From your post #807:

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat is an Arab newspaper published in London, and it’s found a Libyan guard who survived that night, named ‘Ali. (Translation by MEMRI.org; formatting in original.)

... Ali was part of a Special Protection Unit, which comprises members of the February 17 Brigade, a Libyan militia comprising radical Islamists which was established following the Libyan revolution.

Back in March 2012, the U.S. Consulate had hired members of the Special Protection Unit to guard its compound.

‘Ali and others in his team describe ... the embassy’s poor cooperation when, following the June 2012 attack on the embassy, (when a bomb exploded outside the Benghazi consulate) they requested upgrades to their weapons and improvement of the security tools at their disposal.

‘Ali said that during the attack, after the embassy was stormed by some 50 men, ... his team’s calls for backup, in Arabic and English, went unanswered by both the Americans inside the embassy and by the February 17 Brigade headquarters less than two miles away.

Reported today:

US Relied on Firm Using Unarmed Guards for Diplomatic Security in Libya (Used flashlights, batons)
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2946666/posts

Security practices at the diplomatic compound, where Blue Mountain guards patrolled with flashlights and batons instead of guns, have come under U.S. government scrutiny in the wake of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Federal contract data shows that the Benghazi security contract, worth up to $783,284, was listed as a “miscellaneous” award, not as part of the large master State Department contract that covers protection for overseas embassies. ....

The State Department contract for “local guard” services in Benghazi took effect in March 2012. Several of Blue Mountain’s Libyan employees told Reuters that they had no prior security training or experience...

The unarmed guards were told to sound the alarm over the radio and then run for cover if there was an attack, a Libyan who acted as a supervisor for the Blue Mountain local guard team at the mission said during an interview with Reuters.

Documents show Stevens worried about Libya security threats, Al Qaeda before consulate attack
Fox News ^ | 10-19-2012 | James Rosen

Posted on Friday, October 19, 2012 2:56:57 PM by sheikdetailfeather

Across 166 pages of internal State Department documents — released Friday by a pair of Republican congressmen pressing the Obama administration for more answers on the Benghazi terrorist attack — slain U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and the security officers assigned to protect him repeatedly sounded alarms to their superiors in Washington about the intensifying lawlessness and violence in Eastern Libya, where Stevens ultimately died.

On Sept. 11 — the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed — the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled “sensitive,” in which he noted “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as “too weak to keep the country secure.”

The Obama Libya Cover-Up Explained (Long Article)
Townhall.com ^ | October 19, 2012 | Rush Limbaugh

Posted on Friday, October 19, 2012 3:39:49 PM by Kaslin

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: If you were here yesterday, you recall that the last hour of the program I kept promising, kept intending to spend some time on the latest developments of Benghazi and Libya. And I’m glad I didn’t because all hell has broken loose overnight about this. We now know, McClatchy news has come out with the story that practically explains everything. Let me summarize it for you. McClatchy news says that the regime’s concoction of the video story to explain the attack in Benghazi was a purposeful cover created by the regime to cover up the disaster that our operation involving the removing of Moammar Khadafy proved to be.

Getting rid of Khadafy basically turned the Benghazi area into an Al-Qaeda stronghold. That was the truth of the matter, and that’s what the regime doesn’t want anybody to know, or didn’t. So they concocted the story that the video was responsible for the death of the ambassador and the three other Americans in the attack in Benghazi, because the regime had tried to tell this great story, “Look what we did. We cleaned up Libya. We got rid of an evil guy, and we’ve made Libya part of the Arab Spring, a great outbreak of democracy. Look, aren’t we wonderful.” When instead what happened was we kicked him out of there and then left ourselves, and we left ourselves nobody to control what was happening in the aftermath, and Al-Qaeda has established a beachhead in Benghazi.

Obama’s running around saying that there is no more Al-Qaeda, until yesterday when he pulled it out of his speeches. He was saying there was no more Al-Qaeda. I’ll tell you, what we have learned overnight and this morning, Romney is so set up for the foreign policy debate on Monday night, and there’s much more detail to this. You know, brevity is the soul of wit. Everything that I am going to say down the road here on the program today basically will be to explain how McClatchy learned this. It involves the CIA. The CIA knew within 24 hours that it was a militant attack, that there was no video, there was no spontaneous demonstration. The State Department knew immediately. The White House knew. It was Jay Carney who started the lie.

It was Jay Carney under orders, I’m sure, from Obama and whoever else, which started the ball rolling on the video, and then Susan Rice gets involved. And again, all of that was to cover up an absolute disaster. Taking Khadafy out, it’s arguable whether that was a good thing to do, but we did it, and in the process Obama’s raising the flag, (Obama impression) “Look at me, look at me. I mean, I can pull the trigger as good as anybody, get bin Laden, take care of Libya.” And what happened was, in fact, the ringleader of the Benghazi attack is now doing media appearances in the Middle East. He’ going on The Oprah shows of that region bragging about what he did. He’s not hiding behind a mask or anything. The ringleader of the attack is doing media appearances, is doing television shows.

Let’s go quickly to John Bolton. A couple of audio sound bites here. Numbers ten and 11. He was on American Newsroom with Martha MacCallum this morning on Fox. And I love Bolton. You know, Bolton, former UN ambassador for us during Bush, tough-as-nails guy. He’s very, very much into ideology and he is of the belief that the reason everything’s falling apart in the Middle East is because of Obama’s ideology, because of his liberalism, or Marxism or socialism, whatever you want to call it. His view that America is to blame, his view that it’s always America’s fault, and that’s what enabled him to so easily swerve into blaming an American-made video, when he knew that’s what it was not, by the way.

Everybody knew it was not the video. They were lying on purpose to prevent the dots from being connected that Obama’s action created an Al-Qaeda beachhead in Benghazi.

And, by the way, Benghazi, the government, the head of Libya is in Tripoli, and we learn here Tripoli has no control, the government has no control over what’s going on in Benghazi. Benghazi’s a rogue, renegade place, and it’s now Al-Qaeda’s. I mean, it is utterly devastating.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Here is John Bolton. So he was again with Martha MacCallum today on Fox and talking about the way the regime handled the aftermath of the attack. (interruption) No, I don’t... (interruption) I’m not in the... (interruption) I’m being asked a question here. If people would leave me alone, you know, I could probably get this show done in an hour. But since everybody wants to know what I think, they ask me even when I’m in the middle of a monologue.

I don’t think Obama’s “optimal” comment is that big a deal, but there is a point to be made about it. He has no trouble whatsoever excoriating an American citizen over a video. He’ll describe that person in the most despicable terms. But when it comes to the death of the ambassador, “Well, yeah, the death of four Americans, it’s not optimal.” He does have a different set of values.

I don’t think that thing as a stand alone is that big a deal. You might disagree. We’ll talk about it. Anyway, back to John Bolton. MacCallum said to him, “It seems to me to some extent if you were in the [regime], you felt uncomfortable about the way it was handled initially, one thing that you could do you is sort of make it very clear to the American people that the investigation is ongoing.

“Potentially hear from John Brennan, for example, other people who are very high up in this operation who are supposed to be watching over counterterrorism activities around the world. That would give people some reassurance about what’s happening to avenge the deaths of these four American citizens.” She’s basically asking, “Why didn’t they just say, ‘We don’t know what happened yet; we’re looking into it,’ instead of blaming the video?”

Well, you know the answer now, but I want you to hear what Bolton said.

Stevens warned State Dep’t on day he died about deterioriating security in Benghazi
Hot Air ^ | 5:21 pm on October 19, 2012 | Allahpundit

Posted on Friday, October 19, 2012 5:50:46 PM by Ernest_at_the_Beach

Not just on the day he died, mind you. Multiple times before, too. I’m near the point now where I want to abandon the whole “pre-planned attack versus spontaneous protest” line of inquiry just because it’s steering us away from the more important topic of State’s negligence on his security. Besides, we already know, more or less, why Carney and Rice pushed the “spontaneous protest” theory. Ask Saxby Chambliss:

“Talking points distributed by the administration [in the immediate aftermath] are nearly identical to intelligence assessments within hours of the attack, except in one important way: the intelligence judgment that the attackers had ties to al-Qa’ida was excluded from the public points,” [Saxby] Chambliss said in a statement on Friday.

“The administration omitted the known links to al-Qa’ida at almost every opportunity … Whether this was an intentional effort by the administration to downplay the role of terrorist groups, especially al-Qa’ida, is one of the many issues the Senate Intelligence Committee must examine,” Chambliss said.

The guy who got Bin Laden and knocked out Qaddafi didn’t need a storyline in the middle of a campaign about AQ affiliates killing the American ambassador in the heart of the “new Libya.” That’s straightforward, and that’s almost certainly why the “spontaneous protest” theory got traction initially. (“Al Qaeda is on the run” used to be part of Obama’s standard stump speech, in fact. That line has been quietly dropped lately.) What’s not straightforward is why State refused to boost Stevens’s security despite countless warnings about the danger, some from the man himself. It’s inexplicable. It’s not a budget issue, either: Charlene Lamb testified to that before the House. She also testified that State had “the correct number of assets in Benghazi,” which literally no one but her seems to believe is true. So, once again: Why didn’t Stevens have more security? What were they waiting for before making a decision to either send him a more professional force or end the American presence in Benghazi? Was that politicized too, i.e. State didn’t want abandon the consulate over security fears because that would have made for some bad headlines about conditions inside the “new Libya”?

On Sept. 11 — the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed — the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled “sensitive,” in which he noted “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as “too weak to keep the country secure.”…

Roughly a month earlier, Stevens had signed a two-page cable, also labeled “sensitive,” that he entitled “The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya.” Writing on Aug. 8, the ambassador noted that in just a few months’ time, “Benghazi has moved from trepidation to euphoria and back as a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape.” He added, “The individual incidents have been organized,” a function of “the security vacuum that a diverse group of independent actors are exploiting for their own purposes.”

“Islamist extremists are able to attack the Red Cross with relative impunity,” Stevens cabled. “What we have seen are not random crimes of opportunity, but rather targeted and discriminate attacks.” His final comment on the two-page document was: “Attackers are unlikely to be deterred until authorities are at least as capable.”

… “Islamic extremism appears to be on the rise in eastern Libya,” the ambassador wrote [on June 25], adding that “the Al-Qaeda flag has been spotted several times flying over government buildings and training facilities …”

Libyan guards at the consulate also thought security was too thin to meet the challenge from local mujahedeen, but were reportedly told by the Americans they spoke to that everything was cool and that no one would dare approach the consulate — even though, as noted above, even the Red Cross wasn’t spared from attack. (That may have been part of a jihadi strategy to push all western outfits out of the city.) I’d sure like to know which Americans said that; based on his increasingly dire reports to the State Department, it doesn’t sound like Stevens was one of them.

I’ll leave you with this. Funny how Susan Rice is capable of detecting a terrorist attack right away in some cases. Is she sure that Beirut bombing this morning wasn’t a reaction to the Mohammed movie?

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the terrorist bombing in #Beirut & extend our condolences to the victims' loved ones. #Lebanon

“And, ironically, our ambassador to Libya, who was murdered, was at the forefront of assisting those terrorists during the revolt backed by Obama’s illegal war against a sovereign ally.”

That is why Stevens is dead. Seems that he was becoming too mouthy. Once he started receiving death threats and as his fears were increasing, his cables became more frequent and more frantic. He lost their confidence in his willingness to keep his mouth shut and bang.

Watch for more from Lt. Col. Andy Wood who has already stated he would put his entire career in jeopardy to get the truth out and take the consequences for outing classified information...including prison if necessary.

How US Ambassador Chris Stevens May Have Been Linked To Jihadist Rebels In Syria

Michael Kelley | 46 minutes ago

US Weapons Are Going To Hard-Line Jihadists Fighting To Topple The Syrian Regime

The details of the September 11 attack that killed four Americans at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi are still murky and there’s certainly more to be known.

Former CIA officer Clare Lopez argues that the key issue is “the relationship of the U.S. government, Ambassador Christopher Stevens and the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya with Al Qaeda.”

That relationship, Lopez argues, could be connected to the rise of Islamic brigades in Syria, who recently created a “Front to Liberate Syria” to wage jihad against the Syrian regime and turn the country into an Islamic state.

Glenn was right, Libya edition: stunning new report
Friday, Oct 19, 2012

Just a few days after the Benghazi attacks Glenn called out the administration’s phony youtube theory and posited one of his own.

That theory was that Chris Stevens was overseeing the efforts by the administration to arm the rebels fighting Ghaddafi.

Glenn goes over the Business Insider report showing there is ‘growing evidence’ that suggests Amb. Stevens was at least aware of heavy weapons being moved to rebel forces.

“The president is out on the stump speech right now saying that he’s really decimated Al‑Qaeda, but if you go back to when we went into Libya, again the New York Times was reporting that we may be arming the wrong people.

We may actually be arming Al‑Qaeda.
Do you remember that happening during the Arab Spring?” Glenn said.

“They said we were arming Al‑Qaeda. The White House denied it. My speculation was right after the September 11th attacks that not only was this an attack by rebels, this wasn’t due to a video, this was due to the fact that Christopher Stevens was the gun‑runner. He was the guy brokering the deals with Al‑Qaeda‑related affiliates. That was my speculation.

” Now what has the Business Insider found? Their report is below:

The official position is that the US has refused to allow heavy weapons into Syria.

But there’s growing evidence that U.S. agents—particularly murdered ambassador Chris Stevens—were at least aware of heavy weapons moving from Libya to jihadist Syrian rebels.

In March 2011 Stevens became the official U.S. liaison to the al-Qaeda-linked Libyan opposition, working directly with Abdelhakim Belhadj of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group—a group that has now disbanded, with some fighters reportedly participating in the attack that took Stevens’ life.

In November 2011 The Telegraph reported that Belhadj, acting as head of the Tripoli Military Council, “met with Free Syrian Army [FSA] leaders in Istanbul and on the border with Turkey” in an effort by the new Libyan government to provide money and weapons to the growing insurgency in Syria.

Last month The Times of London reported that a Libyan ship “carrying the largest consignment of weapons for Syria … has docked in Turkey.”

The shipment reportedly weighed 400 tons and included SA-7 surface-to-air anti-craft missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

Those heavy weapons are most likely from Muammar Gaddafi’s stock of about 20,000 portable heat-seeking missiles—the bulk of them SA-7s—that the Libyan leader obtained from the former Eastern bloc.

Reuters reports that Syrian rebels have been using those heavy weapons to shoot down Syrian helicopters and fighter jets.

The ship’s captain was ”a Libyan from Benghazi and the head of an organization called the Libyan National Council for Relief and Support,” which was presumably established by the new government.

That means that Ambassador Stevens had only one person—Belhadj—between himself and the Benghazi man who brought heavy weapons to Syria.

Furthermore, we know that jihadists are the best fighters in the Syrian opposition, but where did they come from?

Last week The Telegraph reported that a FSA commander called them “Libyans” when he explained that the FSA doesn’t “want these extremist people here.”

And if the new Libyan government was sending seasoned Islamic fighters and 400 tons of heavy weapons to Syria through a port in southern Turkey —a deal brokered by Stevens’ primary Libyan contact during the Libyan revolution—then the governments of Turkey and the U.S. surely knew about it.

Furthermore there was a CIA post in Benghazi, located 1.2 miles from the U.S. consulate, used as “a base for, among other things, collecting information on the proliferation of weaponry looted from Libyan government arsenals, including surface-to-air missiles” … and that its security features “were more advanced than those at rented villa where Stevens died.”

And we know that the CIA has been funneling weapons to the rebels in southern Turkey. The question is whether the CIA has been involved in handing out heavy weapons from Libya.

In any case, the connection between Benghazi and the rise of jihadists in Syria is stronger than has been officially acknowledged.

“You follow this?
The guy we worked with is the guy doing these deals. Our ally Turkey is ‑‑ knows all about it. Our ally, the prime minister, who’s the best friend of Barack Obama?

Who’s the one he was the first one to call?

He didn’t call, not Tony Blair, he didn’t call Gordan Brown.

He didn’t call anybody.

The first guy he called was Turkey’s leader. He’s the closest to Turkey’s leader,” Glenn said.

“Turkey is taking the arms from Libya and shipping them into Syria.

Reuters also reports that satellite photos exposed a CIA post in Benghazi located 1.2 miles from the consulate. It was used as a base, among other things, for collecting information on the proliferation of weaponry looted from the Libyan government, including surface‑to‑air missiles.

And that its security features were more advanced than those at the rented villa where Stevens died. We also know that a dozen CIA operatives and contractors left the Benghazi base after it was exposed. Could the two CIA groups be connected as a start‑and‑end points to help funnel heavy weapons to the Syrian opposition?

The answer is yes.

We know that the CIA has been funneling weapons to the rebels in southern Turkey.

CNN reports that FSA members are cutting their own deals to get weapons from well‑armed extremists.”

“So it raises questions on who the CIA is arming. We also know that U.S. weapons are now ending up in the hands of hardline Islamists in Syria.

It turns out that many of the jihadists are the same ones, the same people that Stevens helped arm to topple Muammar Gaddafi.”

“Now here we go. Who was he having dinner with? On September 11th.

September 11th he was having a meeting with the Turkish ambassador, the guy who’s involved in the gun‑runnings.

He’s having dinner and he leaves from dinner 40 minutes early.

The consulate is surrounded and he dies.

Eerie coincidence?

I think not.

This is the truth of what happened in Benghazi.”

****************************************************

Like I said. The man knew too much and he was getting scared. Looks like he had damn good reason.

Incommunicado: House Armed Services chairman blocked from getting answers from senior military...
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 10/19/12 | Bill Gertz

Posted on Saturday, October 20, 2012 7:02:55 AM by markomalley

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is demanding answers from four senior United States military officers about whether there was advance warning of terrorist threats and the need for greater security prior to last month’s terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

However, an aide to the chairman, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, (R., Calif.), said the office of secretary of defense Leon Panetta blocked the senior officers from providing the answers last night.

“The chairman is disappointed that the administration won’t respond to this basic request for information,” the aide said.

“It is nearly unprecedented that the office of the secretary of defense would prohibit a member of the uniformed military from answering direct questions posed by the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.”

Pentagon spokesman George Little told the Free Beacon: “We received the letters last night and are working expeditiously to provide a response.”

The chairman’s letters are dated Thursday. They were sent to Gen. Carter F. Ham, commander of the U.S. Africa Command, which is responsible for military activities in Africa; Adm. William H. McRaven, commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command; Vice Adm. Kurt W. Tidd, director for operations at the Pentagon’s Joint Staff; and Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

McKeon asked the officers to provide answers to questions about security threats by the close of business Friday.

The questions reveal that there may be information within the military revealing warnings about terrorist threats and the need to increase security that were ignored by the State Department or other civilians within the Obama administration.

McKeon asked each of the four officers in separate letters whether prior to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi anyone under their command had notified the State Department or other agencies about growing dangers in Libya.

“Given the steadily deteriorating threat environment in Libya prior to Sept. 11, 2012, did you or anyone in your command advise, formally or informally, that the Department of State or any other agency take action to increase security for U.S. personnel in Libya?” McKeon asked.

He also wants to know if there were any requests to increase security in Libya for U.S. personnel.

Also, the letters to the four officers asked whether any military officers under their command had recommended “deployment of additional U.S. military forces to Libya due to the threat environment.”

Other questions focused on determining if the officers were aware that officers under their command recommended increasing security in Libya prior to the deadly attack on the consulate that killed Amb. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

“To your knowledge, has the Department of State or any other federal agency requested additional U.S. military forces to augment security for U.S. personnel in Libya?” McKeon asked.

Since the attack took place five weeks ago, McKeon said he wanted answers by the close of business Friday.

The committee aide said the chairman also had asked for a briefing on events leading up to the attack, and so far the Pentagon has failed to provide the briefing.

McKeon, according to the aide, does not believe any failures related to the deadly terrorist attack can be traced to the U.S. military, which has a limited presence in the region, including special operations engaged in counterterrorism operations.

“He believes it is important whether or not the State Department and the administration were using all the information available at the time” on the terrorist threat and the dangers to U.S. diplomats and intelligence personnel.

McKeon sent the letter as a supplement to an earlier letter to President Obama sent by McKeon and seven other House Committee chairmen, which sought details on the intelligence leading up the attack, security for personnel, and the role played by former Guantanamo detainees in the attack.

The House leaders said in that Sept. 25 letter that administration statements attributing the attack to protests spawned by an anti-Muslim film disturbed them. They emphasized that the consulate murders were “a terrorist attack.”

“Decades after al Qaeda attacked our embassies in East Africa, which catalyzed a series of events that led to the attacks of 9/11, it appears they executed a highly coordinated and well-planned attack against us again,” the Sept. 25 letter states.

“Clearly the threat from al Qaeda and affiliated groups has metastasized; yet we do not appear to be learning from the past.”

The House leaders said it appears the administration has reverted to a past policy of treating terrorism as a criminal matter “rather than also prioritizing the gathering of intelligence to prevent future attacks.”

Notes from the Pentagon

ElBaradei’s revenge

Defense officials tell us the disclosure this week of the 380 tons of missing high explosives from Iraq was the work of International Atomic Energy Agency director Mohamed ElBaradei, who is said to be opposed to the United States.

Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said they believe Mr. ElBaradei, an Egyptian, sought to influence the outcome of the presidential election when his agency called on the new Iraqi government to account for the stored high explosives at Al-Qaqaa.

“There’s no question that most people here think the whole [Iraqi explosives] thing was cooked up,” one official said.

The IAEA wrote a letter to Iraqi Science and Technology Minister Rashan Mandan Omar, who then had his chief monitor, Mohammad Abbas, write back. It was Mr. Abbas who claimed that the explosives were looted after the U.S.-led invasion, a claim defense officials dispute.

The Bush administration has been frustrated that Mr. ElBaradei has been slow to deal with the growing crisis over Iran’s nuclear program and the refusal of Tehran to halt uranium enrichment in violation of IAEA rules.

Mr. ElBaradei also has not been tough on North Korea, for its rogue nuclear program.

An IAEA spokesman could not be reached for comment.

The speed with which the campaign of Sen. John Kerry exploited the issue also has raised suspicions in the Pentagon that U.S. intelligence agencies helped the Kerry campaign with the story, at least until it began to fall apart shortly after the report appeared in the New York Times on Monday.

Iran’s Nuclear Program: What Is Known and Unknown

The Heritage Foundation ^ | March 26, 2010

...Moreover, on December 14, 2009, The Times of London reported that Western intelligence agencies had uncovered Iranian documents indicating that Iranian scientists had tested a neutron initiator, the component that triggers a nuclear weapon. A neutron initiator has no peaceful application. This discovery directly contradicts the U.S. intelligence community’s position that Iran halted nuclear weapons-related work in 2003.[3] On December 18, Iran announced that it was testing more advanced centrifuges, which could enrich uranium faster.

Since 2002, the IAEA has bent over backwards to give Iran the benefit of the doubt, in large part due to the politicized leadership of IAEA Director General Mohammed ElBaradei, who was an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration and often acted as an apologist for Iran. In November 2009, ElBaradei was replaced by Yukiya Amano of Japan.

Under Director General Amano’s leadership, the IAEA appears to be taking a more objective look at the Iranian nuclear program. On February 18, it issued a confidential report that warned for the first time of evidence that Tehran is working on a nuclear warhead for its missiles.[4] This warning contradicts the controversial 2007 U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which concluded that Iran had stopped working on a nuclear weapon in 2003.[5]...

Egypt Protests: Will the Real Mohammed ElBaradei Please Stand Up?
By Anne Bayefsky
Published February 01, 2011
FoxNews.com

In the name of democratic reform, Mohammed ElBaradei is doing his best to appear as the annointed one to succeed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek, should the government fall. In reality, ElBaradei has more in common with Iranian demagogue Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than anything remotely resembling democracy. He is the former Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where his primary legacy was running interference for Iran and ensuring that Iran is now on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons.

Year-after-year for a decade, ElBaradei used his position at the IAEA to stall for time on behalf of Iran. In September 2005 ElBaradei helped push the issue off the Security Council table and bragged: “I am encouraged that the issue has not been referred to the Security Council, precisely to give time for diplomacy and negotiation.” Typical of his foot-dragging was his February 2006 report: “Although the Agency has not seen any diversion of nuclear material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices, the Agency is not at this point in time in a position to conclude that there are no undeclared nuclear materials or activities in Iran. The process of drawing such a conclusion ... is a time consuming process.”

In January 2007, in the midst of growing calls for sanctions against Iran, ElBaradei suggested a “time-out.” In September 2007, with stiffer sanctions on the horizon, ElBaradei again called for a “time-out.” In January 2008 the IAEA reported: “ElBaradei has repeatedly noted that ... the IAEA has not seen any diversion of material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.”
As soon as ElBaradei was finally replaced as IAEA head early last year, his successor Yukiya Amano attempted to distance himself from the obvious cover-up. He issued a report in which the IAEA, for the first time, said things like - on the basis of “extensive” and “credible” information the IAEA now has “concerns about the possible existence in Iran of ... current undisclosed activities related to the development of a nuclear payload for a missile,” and “concerns about possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program.’’

If El Baradei were ever to become President of Egypt, not only would he have helped Iran acquire nuclear weapons, he would undoubtedly turn around and lead the charge for an Egyptian nuclear weapon. Nobel Prize notwithstanding, his calling card is to cast nuclear proliferation as some kind of equal rights game between developed and developing countries.

Here is the frightening interview he gave to the Financial Times on February 19, 2007 that indicates the kind of Iranian look-alike which is in the making: “Iran sees enrichment... as a strategic goal because they feel that this will bring them power, prestige and influence...[A] lot of that is true. A nuclear capability is a nuclear deterrent in many ways...When you see here in the UK the programme for modernising Trident, which basically gets the UK far into the 21st century with a nuclear deterrent, it is difficult then for us to turn around and tell everybody else that nuclear deterrents are really no good for you...”

Reports out of Egypt directly connecting ElBaradei’s political ambitions with Tehran surfaced last September via a political rival, Abdul Mabboud. A story translated from Egyptian Newspaper Al Youm Al Sabeh last September said: “in a communication to the Attorney General of Egypt, Dr. Yasser Najib Abdel Mabboud, has accused Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei...of receiving funds exceeding $7 million (US) from Iran’s leadership as support for ‘political reform in Egypt’.” The story claimed that “the check in the amount of $ 7 million is said to be meant to cover the financial costs of the election campaign and the activities of the Front for Change.”

The shoe sure seems to fit. ElBaradei told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Sunday that: “The Muslim Brotherhood ...has nothing to do with extremism...[T]hey have a lot of credibility...And I have been reaching out to them.” Actually, ElBaradei’s comrade-in-arms is a viciously antisemitic and anti-Western organization that would send Egyptian women back to the stone ages and rupture peace agreements with Israel as a warm-up act.

If the Obama administration throws Mubarek overboard in the immediate future with nothing but an ElBaradei-Muslim Brotherhood front man in the wings, Egyptians will be farther away from democracy than they ever were and the rest of the world will be a far more dangerous place.

Thomas L. Friedman: Getting to Know You ... (January 15, 2012)

Mohamed ElBaradei, the Nobel-Prize winning diplomat who helped galvanize the demands for democracy here, said on Saturday that he was dropping his presidential bid in protest over the military’s continued hold on power nearly a year after the ouster of the strongman Hosni Mubarak.

He helped found an umbrella group, the National Association for Change, which became a rallying point for many of the young activists who later helped lead the uprising against Mr. Mubarak.

Mr. ElBaradei appears to have been one of the few who publicly anticipated the revolt that forced out Mr. Mubarak. In a widely circulated online video he released weeks before the revolts broke out in Tunisia and then Egypt, Mr. ElBaradei bluntly told the Mubarak government that it faced its “last chance,” predicting “there will be violence.”

“A day of reckoning will come,” he said. “And I am asking the Egyptian people to keep a record of every case of torture and oppression and the violation of personal liberty.”

In an interview in December 2010, about a month before the uprising began, he repeatedly invoked his visits to the Tehran Hilton on the eve of the Iranian revolution in 1979. “Things were boiling underground, and that is what I see here in Egypt,” he said. “I would not be surprised if you saw violence in a couple of weeks, or in a month or two.”

ElBaradei is a front man for the Muslim Brotherhood, he’s also a board member of the International Crisis Group where Thomas Pickering (Hillary’s pick to head-up their Libya Attack Investigation) is Chair (along with Louise Arbor ICC (she was the prosecutor of the Serbs). Soros is also a board member - he had a part in setting up the ICG but his friends and frontmen Mollach Mark Brown (UN, oil for food - International Rescue...), and Mort Abramowitz - Century Institute, Carnegie Peace International...put their names to it)

ElBaradei knew a little too much on what was going to happen in Libya, Cairo etc., he’s either a prophet or in it up to his neck. These committees are made up of the usual suspects. Track back to the Balkans. I had stuff on each of them but computer trouble erased the file had trouble with my computer but will do another search time permitting.

Bottomline:The Balkans, Sierra Leone, Philippines, Afghanstan, Georgia - Orange Revolution, Turkmenistan... , along with this whole Arab Spring deal is about Pipelines (water/minerals/land). Interesting that the cities that have been taken over by the Jihad Salafists are port cities. The UN is the umbrella - the US gets used for her money and military. Thomas Pickering (Hillary’s old friend) is a board member of TMK OIl and Pipelines - Moscow. Some government aka elected officials and otherwise, are in on the deals while others refuse...the people that refuse are being systematically removed. Their Human Rights Watch (Soros) does the reporting which is picked up by the MSM which makes their boss’ happy because some of them are in on it. Yes, it sounds crazy but being rich isn’t where it’s at with these people, it’s the power, and the game of making more money. Their supposed concern for refugees, the poor etc., is also a front to gain followers - the Jihad Salafists do the same thing.

“Those heavy weapons are most likely from Muammar Gaddafi’s stock of about 20,000 portable heat-seeking missiles—the bulk of them SA-7s—that the Libyan leader obtained from the former Eastern bloc.”

Where did Gaddafi get his advanced surface-to-air missiles?
BRYAN PRESTON
March 31, 2011

So where did they come from? No one (outside the regime) is sure, but

They’re Russian-made SA-24s Grinch missiles. Very portable, used for knocking out aircraft. Aviation Week first noticed them in recent footage of Libyan government army operations. And they’re nasty.

The SA-24 is more accurate, longer-flying, and more lethal than than earlier models of surface-to-air missiles. It also has a dual-band infrared seeker and is more difficult to jam than older systems.

The missiles “reportedly have counter-countermeasures that may be difficult for planes with just flares to counter,” Matthew Schroeder, director of the Federation of American Scientists’ Arms Sales Monitoring Project, tells Danger Room. ”Overall it’s just a much more capable system.”

Russia has sold Venezuela a shoulder-fired version of the SA-24, which is a bit different from the truck-mounted model found by Aviation Week. In classified cables released by WikiLeaks, American diplomats expressed alarm at Russia’s deal with Venezuela, writing that the missile, “considered one of the most lethal portable air defense systems ever made,” was at risk of falling into other hands.

Faced with evidence that Russia’s sales of ammunition to Venezuela had ended up in the hands of Colombian terrorists, Russian diplomats tried to reassure their American counterparts that they had their arms sales under control.

I don’t find reassurances from a KGB police government, about Hugo Chavez, particularly reassuring. Venezuela reportedly bought 1,800 SA-24s from Russia in 2009. At $60k to $80K a pop, Gaddafi can afford to buy an awful lot of them.

“Russia’s sales of ammunition to Venezuela had ended up in the hands of Colombian terrorists” - there seems to be a pattern - not only locally (fast and furious) but internationally!

McCain was with Stephens in Libya praising the arming of the “revolutionaries”. I’m not surprised that McCain and his cronies gave Michelle Bachmann a hard time for calling out the Muslim Brotherhood within the WH. They’re working with them.

It looks like Human Rights Watch (Soros) is attempting to save their butts (Abdel Hakim Belhadj and Sami al-Saadi): http://www.jadaliyya.com/pages/index/7231/delivered-into-enemy-hands_us-led-abuse-and-rendit

Most likely to cover for why so many terrorists were released in the first place (George Bush’s fault).

Full Title:

They DID know: Now White House admits they knew ‘within 24 hours’ that Al Qaeda was behind Libya attacks despite confusing public statements
U.S. Government privately labelled attack on U.S. Consulate a terrorist act almost immediately and knew CIA was chasing specific suspect

White House claimed for a week that assault was staged by crazed protestors reacting to anti-Islam film
Finally admitted act was a ‘terrorist’ strike last week

Hillary Clinton yesterday said she believed the attack linked to al Qaeda
Libyan president Mohamed Magarief said that attacks were ‘pre-planned’
FBI being denied access to crime scene in Benghazi

U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens was killed along with fellow Americans Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty
The Obama administration has confirmed that it knew within 24 hours that U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens had been killed in a pre-planned terrorist attack and not by crazed protestors enraged by an anti-Islam film.

The White House claimed for a week that the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was ‘spontaneous’ and sparked by the controversial movie, before finally admitting that the 9/11 anniversary attack was orchestrated by terrorists.

But senior U.S. officials have now confessed the government privately labelled the attack a terrorist act almost immediately after it happened, and even knew that the perpetrators had links to al Qaeda.

Two unnamed officials told Fox News that the administration internally flagged the strike ‘terrorism’ from day one, setting off the proper protocols and mobilising resources.

The government had also been informed by September 12 that U.S. intelligence agencies were hunting on specific suspect - militant Ansar al-Shariah and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, who were likely responsible for the deadly attack.

W.H. Tries to Write Al Qaeda Out of Libya Story
Weekly Standard ^ | 12:22 PM, Oct 20, 2012 | STEPHEN F. HAYES

Posted on Saturday, October 20, 2012 4:16:48 PM by Ernest_at_the_Beach

The Obama administration appears to be mounting yet another version of its campaign to push back on claims that it misled on the intelligence related to the attacks in Benghazi on 9/11/12. But the new offensive by the administration, which contradicts many of its earlier claims and simply disregards intelligence that complicates its case, is raising fresh questions in the intelligence community and on Capitol Hill about the manipulation of intelligence for political purposes.

The administration’s new line takes shape in two articles out Saturday, one in the Los Angeles Times and the other by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius. The Times piece reports that there is no evidence of an al Qaeda role in the attack.

Sources: Predator drone was over Benghazi consulate during last hours of attack
Hotair ^

Posted on Saturday, October 20, 2012 10:39:22 PM by chessplayer

CBS News has been told that, hours after the attack began, an unmanned Predator drone was sent over the U.S. mission in Benghazi, and that the drone and other reconnaissance aircraft apparently observed the final hours of the protracted battle…

But it was too late to help the Americans in Benghazi. The ambassador and three others were dead.

Retired CIA officer Gary Berntsen believes help could have come much sooner. He commanded CIA counter-terrorism missions targeting Osama bin Laden and led the team that responded after bombings of the U.S. Embassy in East Africa.

“You find a way to make this happen,” Berntsen says. “There isn’t a plan for every single engagement. Sometimes you have to be able to make adjustments. They made zero adjustments in this. They stood and they watched and our people died.”

Benghazi: Obama and His Ilk Hung Chris Stevens and Others Out to Dry
Townhall.com ^ | October 21, 2012 | Doug Giles

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 6:57:38 AM by Kaslin

This past Friday the State Department released internal docs showing that Chris Stevens, U.S. Ambassador to hell’s corridor in Libya, begged Obama’s boys in D.C. to ramp up security in Benghazi. And, as we all know now, he got nothing from the State Department but was allowed to be tortured and murdered by “democracy seekers” from the “Religion of Peace” in the “liberated” nation of Libya.

As far as I am concerned, blood is dripping from Obama’s golf-gloved campaign hands. Whatever do I mean, you ask? Well, according to James Rosen’s findings in the newly released damning papers, it’s crap like …

· On September 11—the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed—the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled “sensitive,” in which he noted “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as “too weak to keep the country secure.”

· Roughly a month earlier, Stevens had signed a two-page cable, also labeled “sensitive,” that he entitled “The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya.” Writing on August 8, the ambassador noted that in just a few months’ time, “Benghazi has moved from trepidation to euphoria and back as a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape … The individual incidents have been organized,” he added, a function of “the security vacuum that a diverse group of independent actors are exploiting for their own purposes.”

· By September 4, Stevens’s aides were reporting back to Washington on the “strong revolutionary and Islamist sentiment” in the city.

Scarcely more than two months had passed since Stevens had notified the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and other agencies about a “recent increase in violent incidents,” including “attacks against western [sic] interests.” “Until the GOL [Government of Libya] is able to effectively deal with these key issues,” Stevens wrote on June 25, “the violence is likely to continue and worsen.”

· After the U.S. consulate in Benghazi had been damaged by an improvised explosive device, earlier that month, Stevens had reported to his superiors that an Islamist group had claimed credit for the attack, and in so doing had “described the attack as ‘targeting the Christians supervising the management of the consulate.’”

“Islamic extremism appears to be on the rise in eastern Libya,” the ambassador wrote, adding “the Al-Qaeda flag has been spotted several times flying over government buildings and training facilities …”

· In the days leading up to 9/11, warnings came even from people outside the State Department. A Libyan women’s rights activist, Wafa Bugaighis, confided to the Americans in Benghazi in mid-August: “For the first time since the revolution, I am scared.”

From the 166 hellish pages we see a stack of warnings, via multiple cables sent to D.C. from Chris’s own laptop about which diddly was done—and that being after prior bombings of the Red Cross and our own compound and an assassination attempt on the British ambassador. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. This is gross and inexcusable.

If what happened in Benghazi on 9/11 was not an act of terror, or an act of war, I don’t know what is. What’s the “Religion of Peace” got to do to wake this administration the heck up? Destroy one of Obama’s favorite golf courses?

Oh, BTW: Missing from the extensive documents is any mention of a YouTube video ticking these “peaceful protestors” off.

Someone please forward this over to Romney’s campaign for talking points for Monday night’s debate on “National Security.”

BENGHAZI: Documents show Stevens worried about security threats, al-Qaeda
The Daily Bret Blog ^ | Oct 19 , 2012 | JAMES ROSEN

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 9:12:47 AM by Ernest_at_the_Beach

Across 166 pages of internal State Department documents – released today by a pair of Republican congressmen pressing the Obama administration for more answers on the Benghazi terrorist attack – slain U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and the security officers assigned to protect him repeatedly sounded alarms to their superiors in Washington about the intensifying lawlessness and violence in Eastern Libya, where Stevens ultimately died.

On September 11 – the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed – the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled “sensitive,” in which he noted “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as “too weak to keep the country secure.”

In the document, Stevens also cited a meeting he had held two days earlier with local militia commanders. These men boasted to Stevens of exercising “control” over the Libyan Armed Forces, and threatened that if the U.S.-backed candidate for prime minister were to prevail in Libya’s internal political jockeying, “they would not continue to guarantee security in Benghazi.”

Roughly a month earlier, Stevens had signed a two-page cable, also labeled “sensitive,” that he entitled “The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya.” Writing on August 8, the ambassador noted that in just a few months’ time, “Benghazi has moved from trepidation to euphoria and back as a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape…The individual incidents have been organized,” he added, a function of “the security vacuum that a diverse group of independent actors are exploiting for their own purposes.”

“Islamist extremists are able to attack the Red Cross with relative impunity,” Stevens cabled.

New details emerge of deadly attack on US Consulate in Libya (Obama warned of possible attacks)
fox news ^ | 10/21/2012 | By Greg Palkot

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 12:40:35 PM by tobyhill

Nearly six weeks later, the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that left Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead is still shrouded in mystery. A clearer outline of the attack, though, is emerging.

A credible witness tells Fox News that, prior to the attack, he heard a mob approaching the mission’s front gate, chanting blood-thirsty slogans, before they broke in. He said it was less like a demonstration and more like a warm-up to battle.

This could explain how others thought, including some I spoke with, that the attack started as a protest. In the crowd, we are told, were members of Islamist groups from Benghazi. They all deny responsibility for the attack.

One such figure, singled out in the past week, was one-time Brigade leader Ahmed Abu Khattalah. Both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal last Wednesday, citing Libyan officials, described him as a key suspect. They even suggested he was “on the run.”

I met with him openly last Friday. He admitted he was in the area of the mission the night of the attack (directing traffic) and inside the compound (assisting fellow brigade members). He denied any responsibility.

Bigger Than Watergate? Rep Issa Questions Obama’s Role in Benghazi
Big Peace ^ | 10/21/12 | AWR Hawkins

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 12:43:53 PM by markomalley

On Friday Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent a 10 page letter to President Obama asking him to clarify the role of the White House in the Benghazi attacks.
In the letter, Issa pointed pointed again to the refusals to increase security. He specifically cited a 16-man security that could have been sent in but was not, because Obama allegedly wanted to lessen the number of U.S. security personnel in country in order to “normalize relations” in Libya.

Democrats are disputing this claim, because they know it will do Obama in politically if it can be proven.

Yet Issa is asking Obama to explain this very point

[The American people] deserve a complete explanation about your administration’s decision to accelerate a normalized presence in Libya at what now appears to be at the cost of endangering lives. These critical foreign policy decisions are not made by low or mid-level career officials — they are typically made through a structured and well-reasoned process that includes the National Security Council at the White House.

Portman: Iran story looks like “another national security leak from the White House”
Townhall.com ^ | October 21, 2012 | ERIKA JOHNSON

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 4:13:14 PM by Kaslin

It was only a few months back that there was plenty of hearty suspicion going around concerning the White House’s involvement in a specific string of high-profile national-security leaks to the media, and on MSNBC’s Meet the Press this morning, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman suggested something of the same vein in regards to yesterday’s report on possible negotiations between Iran and the United States, via the NJ:

Portman, R-Ohio, said that the fact both countries are denying the story makes it look like another inappropriate leak from the administration rather than a diplomatic breakthrough.

It looks like “another national security leak from the White House,” he said on NBC’s Meet The Press. “They’ve done a lot of that.” …

Portman added that one-on-one negotiations would also be unwise because it would cast aside countries like France, which have helped marshal sanctions.

“The last thing we want is to abandon our allies on this,” he said.

I point to Portman’s response because he’s the man who’s been tasked with trying to get inside President Obama’s head as Mitt Romney’s debate-practice sparring partner, and since he’s been so heavily involved in the preparation process, this could be a good hint for the tack that Romney will take in Monday’s third and final presidential debate on all things foreign-policy related.

Team Romney has been highly critical of both President Obama’s leak-riddled administration and his handling of the United States’ relationships with Israel and Iran, and it’ll certainly be one of the front-seat issues in the debate. If this is really something that the administration floated to help bolster the president’s foreign-policy creds just before the debate and perhaps something that the president could even bring up himself as a positive during the debate, I’d wager that Romney won’t let it be too easy for him.

The U.S. intelligence official, who has access to a wide swath of reporting from various spy agencies, told The Times that a few days after the attack, “We looked at it and said, ‘There is enough information here. There’s a body of evidence here that we resolvedly say, tells us, that this was not a spontaneous attack.’ We adjusted our assessment.”

Rep. Rogers calls latest Libya intel disclosures ‘orchestrated defense’ of administration
FoxNews.com ^ | 10/21/2012

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 11:11:23 PM by RoosterRedux

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said over the weekend that recent disclosures by intelligence officials that once again revise the narrative on what happened during the deadly attack last month in Libya suggest an “orchestrated defense of the administration.”

The Michigan Republican congressman did not specify what disclosures he was talking about, but was likely referring to recent news articles downplaying the role of Al Qaeda in the Sept. 11 strike, as well as comments by intelligence officials claiming once again that protests elsewhere over an anti-Islam film may have played a role in inspiring the attack.

“It appears from a spate of articles that there is an orchestrated defense of the administration underway with selective disclosures of (intelligence community) products to support what policy-makers have said publicly,” Rogers said in a statement.

Report: Islamist radicals find warm welcome in Obama White House
Daily Caller ^ | October 22, 2012 | Neil Munro

Posted on Monday, October 22, 2012 1:26:35 AM by Cincinatus’ Wife

White House visitor records show that administration officials have hosted numerous White House meetings with a series of U.S.-based Muslim political groups that have close ties to jihadi groups and push to reduce anti-terrorism investigations.

The visits were discovered by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, which compared the Obama White House’s visitor records with its database of Islamist advocacy groups.

For example, the records show that officials from the Council on American Islamic Relations have visited the White House 20 times, according to the organization’s report.

Members of CAIR were invited to the White House, even though an April 2009 FBI statement said the bureau “does not view CAIR as an appropriate liaison partner” because of its ties to the Hamas jihadi group.

Read the White House Visitor Logs

Administration officials also invited Syrian-born Louay Safi to the White House twice in 2011, even though he had been named an unindicted co-conspirator in two terrorism cases, and had been barred from Fort Hood following the 2009 jihadi attack by a Muslim U.S. Army major.

In contrast, White House officials have not invited Zuhdi Jasser, an Arizona-based, American-born moderate Muslim and former Navy officer.

“We’ve never been invited and nether have any of [the 24 leaders in] our American Islamic Leadership Coalition,” Jasser told The Daily Caller.

The absence of invitations to real Muslim moderates allows White House officials to pretend that members of the well-funded, U.S.-based radical group are moderates, even when they’re linked to the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood, he said.

Jasser’s nonpartisan coalition includes left-wing and feminist Muslims who are frequently criticized by the groups invited to the White House, he said.

“The White House has selectively omitted genuine [Muslim] moderates and instead has picked radical Muslims to meet,” said a statement from Steve Emerson, founder of the Investigative Project on Terrorism.

The closed-door White House meetings legitimize the radicals, but do not bring them into the mainstream, Emerson told TheDC.

“The American public has a right to know why the White House is meeting with Hamas front groups,” he added.

The visitor logs show that many of the Muslim advocates met with coalition-building officials in the White House, rather than with national security officials. The officials they met with include Paul Monteiro, the associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, and Amanda Brown, assistant to the then-White House director of political affairs Patrick Gaspard.

Gaspard is now the executive director of the Democratic National Committee.

The White House’s Secret Service guards do not veto invites from White House officials, but merely tell the officials if the guests will be arrested on existing charges if they arrive at the gates.

The meetings were likely intended to boost the president’s nationwide effort to bind often-rivaling constituency groups into the Democratic Party’s diversity coalition.

That disparate coalition already includes groups claiming to represent environmentalists, blue-collar workers, immigrants, African-Americans, Hispanics, gun-control advocates, Jews, gays, tort lawyers and many others.

In April, White House officials invited members of the National Network for Arab American Communities to a White House meeting.

“Our issues are American issues that affect our entire nation … and we will ensure that our community’s voice is at the forefront of public debates around healthcare, immigration and national security reform,” Linda Sarsour, NNAAC’s national advocacy director, said in an April press release.

Sarsour has been a White House visitor on seven different occasions. Her network includes 23 separate member associations, including the Illinois-based Arab American Action Network.

That group’s director, Hatem Abudayyeh, has been under criminal investigation at least since late 2010, when FBI agents raided his home as part of an investigation into terror-related financing.

Abudayyeh visited the White House in April 2010, according to the Investigative Project on Terrorism’s study.

Muslim voters likely comprise less than one percent of the nation’s electorate. Many are in blue states, including California and Illinois, but a significant number of Muslims have settled in Michigan and Virginia, where every vote could potentially sway a close election.

Overall, 75 percent of Muslim Arab Americans support Obama, while 8 percent support Gov. Mitt Romney, according to a poll of 400 Arab Americans taken in September by the Arab American Institute.

In turn, Christian Arabs strongly favor Romney by 16 percentage points, reducing Obama’s overall support among Arab Americans to 52 percent, according to the poll.

In 2008, Obama won 67 percent of the Arab-American vote.

James Zogby, the Arab-American founder of the AAI, estimates there are a combined 833,000 Arab-American voters in Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida.

The White House’s Muslim constituency group meetings are supplemented by additional meetings outside the White House.

In June, George Selim, the White House’s director for community partnerships, told TheDC that “there is [sic] hundreds of examples of departments and agencies that meet with CAIR on a range of issues.”

Selim’s office was formed in January to ensure cooperation by law enforcement and social service agencies with Muslim identity groups in the United States.

The CAIR meetings were arranged even though CAIR has extensive ties to jihad groups, including Hamas — the Palestinian affiliate of the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood.

Top officials, including President Barack Obama, have participated in the Muslim outreach.

Obama has chosen to meet personally with leaders of several Muslim groups, including the Islamic Society of North America and the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

That group’s co-founder, Iraqi-born Salem al-Marayati, visited the White House six times. He has denounced several successful convictions of jihadi terrorists, and has repeatedly called for Muslims to stop cooperation with the FBI except when it is mediated by MPAC or other Muslim groups.

The Islamic Society of North America was declared an unindicted co-conspirator in a successful 2008 trial of a Texas-based Muslim group that smuggled funds to Hamas. In October 2011, Mohamed Magid, the Sudanese-born president of ISNA, told top Justice Department officials that “teaching people that all Muslims are a threat to the country … is against the law and the Constitution.”

Some of Obama’s deputies, especially Valerie Jarrett and Tom Perez, who runs the civil-rights section in the Justice Department, have also been enthusiastic supporters of the outreach policy.

Jarrett spoke at ISNA’s 2009 conference, and Perez spoke at its 2012 event.

TheDC emailed or called the White House, MPAC, CAIR, Safi, Sarsour’s press secretary and Abudayyeh for comment. None responded.

Any outreach to Islamic groups carries a political risk for American politicians because many Arab groups are infused with the bitter ethnic and religious politics in their foreign homelands.

The most important of those conflicts is the resentment among many Muslim Arabs over the remarkable successes of the small Jewish-majority state of Israel.

“War and occupation in our home countries leads to political and legislative attacks on us here … we must advocate and organize within our community to affect change,” says an Arab language speaker on the Arab American Action Network’s website.

Also, many of the Muslim-advocacy groups are led by religious zealots, ensuring a conflict with social-liberal groups in the diversity coalition. For example, in June 2010, Monteiro met with Muzzamil Siddiqi, the former head of the Islamic Society of North America, even though Siddiqi had declared in 2001 that that he “supported laws in countries where homosexuality is punishable by death.”

Numerous Democratic and Republican politicians have already grappled with this problem.

In August 2007, then-Democratic governor of Virginia Tim Kaine appointed a Muslim immigrant — Esam Omeish — to a Virginia panel on immigration. He rapidly rescinded the appointment after learning of Omeish’s vocal support of jihad, the name given to war waged for Islam, during a radio talk-show.

Omeish was one of the top officials at a radical-linked mosque in Falls Church, Va., that hired Anwar al-Aulaqi as its imam prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. Aulaqi subsequently fled and was later tied to numerous jihadi attacks, including the 9/11 and Fort Hood attacks.

President Obama approved a drone strike in Yemen that killed Aulaqi in September 2011.

Omeish has been welcomed to Obama’s White House three times.

In 2006, California’s Sen. Barbara Boxer revoked a routine “certificate of achievement” award to a Californian employee of CAIR after a conservative blogger brought to light inflammatory statements made by the awardee. “When a mistake has been made, the record has to be set straight,” Boxer’s office announced.

CAIR officials have visited Obama’s White House twenty times.

But CAIR’s regional offices includes some exceptional people, said Brian Levin, director for the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State University, San Bernardino.

However, he added, “I personally will not sit at any event where CAIR is participating … [because] their national leadership has been involved in things so that I’d rather abstain from even appearing to endorse.”

MPAC’s leadership has evolved and improved, Levin argued. MPAC’s al-Marayati “is not a bad guy … there’s a difference between him and CAIR, by a long-shot,” he added.

Republicans have also misjudged some of these radical Muslim groups.

Before and shortly after the 9/11 jihad attack, President George W. Bush met with jihad-linked immigrants, including CAIR co-founder Nihad Awad and Abdurrahman Alamoudi, a leader in several American Islamist groups.

In 2001, Bush’s administration invited Alamoudi to speak at the national prayer service for the jihadis’ 9/11 victims. In 2004, Alamoudi was sentenced to 23 years in prison for plotting to kill a top Saudi government leader.

Bush’s deputies learned their lesson and later scrubbed invitations to jihad-linked advocates.

Regardless of ethnicity or nationality, said Levin, “politicians really have to be carefully watching who you associate with, because many times they’re antithetical to the general goals you champion.”

First, Aid the Living
National Review Online ^ | October 21, 2012 | Bing West

Posted on Monday, October 22, 2012 6:51:08 AM by billorites

A U.S. ambassador is missing and his diplomatic team is desperately fighting off terrorist attacks. Our commander-in-chief and his national-security team in Washington are listening to the phone calls from the Americans under attack and watching real-time video from a drone circling overhead. Yet the U.S. military sends no aid. Why?

On September 11, at about 10 p.m. Libyan time (4 p.m. Washington), Ambassador Chris Stevens and a small staff were inside our consulate in Benghazi when terrorists attacked. The consulate staff immediately contacted Washington and our embassy in Tripoli. The White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, and numerous military headquarters monitored the entire battle in real time via the phone calls from Benghazi and video from a drone overhead.

Our diplomats fought for seven hours without any aid from outside the country. Four Americans died while the Obama national-security team and our military passively watched and listened. The administration is being criticized for ignoring security needs before the attack and for falsely attributing the assault to a mob. But the most severe failure has gone unnoticed: namely, a failure to aid the living.

By 4:30 p.m. Washington time, the main consulate building was on fire and Ambassador Stevens was missing. In response, the embassy in Tripoli launched an aircraft carrying 22 men. Benghazi was 400 miles away.

At 5 p.m., President Obama met with Vice President Biden and Secretary of Defense Panetta in the Oval Office. The U.S. military base in Sigonella, Sicily, was 480 miles away from Benghazi. Stationed at Sigonella were Special Operations Forces, transport aircraft, and attack aircraft — a much more formidable force than 22 men from the embassy.

In the past, presidents had taken immediate actions to protect Americans. In 1984, President Reagan had ordered U.S. pilots to force an airliner carrying terrorists

Last week, Reza Kahlili, a former Revolutionary Guard member wrote that Iran had reached a deal with the Obama Administration to preserve portions of its nuclear program.

Hossain Ebrahimi told reporters yesterday that Obama sent the regime a secret message.

On Saturday, the Iranian regime confirmed this report. The Iranian regime revealed on Saturday that the Obama Administration sent them a secret message through the Swiss Embassy recognizing their nuclear rights. The Swiss government, acting through its Embassy in Tehran, serves as protecting power for U.S. interests in Iran. Fars News reported, via Weasel Zippers:

Senior Iranian parliamentary sources revealed on Saturday that the Swiss envoy to Tehran has quoted US President Barack Obama as acknowledging Iran’s nuclear rights.

Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Livia Leu Agosti attended a meeting with senior Iranian foreign ministry officials a few days ago to submit a letter from the US president to Tehran leaders.

Vice-Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Ebrahimi told FNA that during the meeting, Agosti had told the Iranian officials that President Barack Obama recognizes Iran’s right of access and use of the nuclear technology.

“There are a couple of points with regard to this (US) message (to Iran),” Ebrahimi said and added, “Firstly, during the session to submit the message, the Swiss ambassador to Tehran quoted the US president as saying that ‘we (the US) recognize your nuclear rights’.”

As regards the second issue, the lawmaker said that the Swiss diplomat had also quoted Obama as saying that “I didn’t want to impose sanctions on your central bank but I had no options but to approve it since a Congress majority had approved the decision.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said on Sunday that Iran has received a US message regarding the Strait of Hormoz via three different channels.

“The US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice had handed a letter to Iran’s Ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khazayee; the Swiss Ambassador to Tehran (Livia Leu Agosti) also conveyed the same thing; and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani delivered the same message to Iranian officials,” he said last Sunday.

The US letter follows threats by Iran last month to shut off the Strait of Hormoz – the world’s most important oil shipping lane – if new US and EU sanctions over its nuclear program halted Iranian oil exports.

CBS News: Why didn’t we send the military to rescue Benghazi personnel?

video at link...y now we’ve gotten the basic details of the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi — no thanks to the White House, which tried to pass it off as a “spontaneous demonstration” that “spun out of contro” for more than a week after the attack. Not too many people may have understood that the attack lasted for seven hours, however — and that American military assets were in easy reach. The last two Americans who died had managed to survive six hours into the attack.

CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson asked the obvious question yesterday: If we could fly an unarmed drone over the consulate while it was under attack, why didn’t we send the military in to rescue our people?

Excerpt:

The United States had an unmanned Predator drone over its consulate in Benghazi during the attack that slaughtered four Americans — which should have led to a quicker military response, it was revealed yesterday.

“They stood, and they watched, and our people died,” former CIA commander Gary Berntsen told CBS News.

We have been saying for years that Osama was dead some time after escaping Tora Bora, and why.

The whole later “hunt” was theater played by both sides.

I don’t doubt it. Maybe they used a stand-in and the Seals weren’t aware of it. Makes sense. We weren’t allowed to see the body because we didn’t want to upset the muslim world. Yet obama hasn’t stopped bragging about it since it happened.
