It has been legal for people to take loaded firearms into Mount Rainier since 2010, when a federal law went into effect that made possession of firearms in national parks subject to state gun laws.
Bill Wade, the outgoing chair of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, said Congress should be regretting its decision to allow loaded weapons in national parks. He called Sunday’s fatal shooting a tragedy that could have been prevented. He hopes Congress will reconsider the law that took effect in early 2010, but doubts that will happen in today’s political climate.

You guys make me sick. You don’t wait for anything before you start yapping about “the killer”. Is that what everyone said when a Vietnam vet with PTSD killed someone back in the day? Yeah, “that killer probably had issues before he went to Vietnam...Yeah, that vet deserved to die!”
If you read up on this, yes, he had PTSD issues...But, tragic as it is that the mother of two children died..its also tragic we can’t get plenty of help for our veterans.
According to you...why bother? They were messed up before they went over there...and anyways, they deserved to die in a cold river, they’re just killers.

I’m kind of surprised at the attitude on this thread too. I can be as vengeful as the next person, but I can’t be happy this young man met such a fate. I think he deserved punishment, but not this.
It certainly is. I've seen it referred to as "paradoxical undressing". Supposedly it occurs due to the constriction and then subsequent dilation of blood vessels within a person's extremities as they experience stages of hypothermia. Not sure of the physiology, but the bottom line is that the person will suddenly feel overheated even as their temperature continues to drop. As a result they'll shed layers of clothing, hence hastening the process.
I also thought of that when I read the about the one shoe. I also thought that a man in the mountains would likely have at least a jacket. But the younger generations consider it fashionable to go out in the cold with no coat, shorts (or pajama bottoms) and flip-flops. The young people today give no thought to what happens if things go bad while they are away from home. Going out like that can mean death or easily the loss of body parts to frost bite.
The shoe could have been lost early on when he was running away. If it was he should have surrendered then because it was a death sentence.
We're doing more now for vets than we EVER have before--and that includes WWI, WWII and Vietnam vets who saw incredibly horrible combat conditions--or years in horrific POW camps.
One can barely turn around and not hear on TV or other media about private and public groups helping out vets... My WWII-era parents are amazed at all the focus on vets today--something they never saw in their generation--and this for all volunteer military--that, relative to experience--are very well paid in salary and even life-time benefits. Almost every (smart) job recruiter too, gives preference for veterans...as the discipline and respect for authority engrained in the military, itself pays lifetime benefits.
Yes we need to be grateful and help out men and women who put their lives on the line to serve America, but, guys who go wild like this man evidently did--are not the fault of America not caring for her vets.
I've noticed this too. Something as minor as a flat tire--or running out of gas can turn to a life-threatening crises for the stupid flops/shorts wearing fashionistas.
Didn't anyone spend time in the Boy Scouts, where one is taught to "Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst?"
To me it's irresponsible and effeminate for men especially to be underdressed and unprepared going out in cold weather.
In a white out you can become disoriented very quickly and die just yards from your own front door.
In the winter if the weather is bad stay home. The Global Warmists think that rising temperatures are going to kill millions. Well the cold kills much quicker.
I think of the young woman with the two little girls....working to provide for the public on New Years Day...I'll save my sympathy for her dtrs and her husband and family...
My point is the msm is all over the vet status while omitting salient details in other reporting, out of political correctness.
You mean like the guy in Texas who dressed himself as Santa and then shot his whole family to death on Christmas morning?
Notice how long it took for that story to get out. In fact, I don't know if any of the major news sources even covered the honor killing angle. If it wasn't for TheBlaze.com and DrudgeReport.com we wouldn't know anything about that part of the story.
Let me get this right....because we did not do enough for previous war veterans , whatever services our current vets get should be “enough”?
The VN and Korean War vets are the most supportive of our veterans getting all the help they can.
And yes, there are still not enough services for them.
I stand by my comments. I spent 21 years in the Marine Corps, three running the separations center, and I’ve seen a lot of troubled young Marines come and go. Many of these kids come into the service specifically because they have issues. The military doesn’t create the problem, they bring it with them when they enlist and when they are finally kicked out.
As to the PTSD, I don’t see that he was ever diagnosed. That comes from the opinion of his girlfriend in her custody affidavit.
There will be much more coming out about this guy and his past, so we will eventually know. As for me, he murdered an innocent young woman in cold blood. I will shed no tears for him.
True, many come back with emotional problems. In my experience, many had problems before entering the service. Many veterans will not develope PTSD, are not subject to overt emotional problems and lead perfectly normal lives upon return.
There is also a school of thought that says when permission is given to act out, many individuals will take advantage of that permission to blame basic life problems on some incident. This is a controversial theory. I have read a few things about it lately, but I believe it’s not that new.
Follow up... your firebug was legally present on a non-immigrant visa that expires Jan 18th. His ditsy mother, however, is illegal.
