CBS NEWS ^ | Tuesday January 3, 2012

After a disappointing fifth-place finish in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, Texas Governor Rick Perry said he is going home to Texas to assess "whether there is a path forward for myself in this race."

"With the voters' decision tonight in Iowa, I've decided to return to Texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus, determine whether there is a path forward for myself in this race," Perry told supporters at the end of the night.

The candidate, once considered a frontrunner in the race for the GOP nomination, earned just 10 percent on Tuesday's contest with more

It’s been a constant thing on Free Republic and apparently with Republicans.

Constant infatuation with a particular candidate; say, Sarah Palin (yes, I was guilty there); disappointment when they didn’t run; quickly transferring love to another... mostly Cain. He proved unworthy, but the devotion here was a little scary. Then the Palin/Cain/? crowd switched to Newt.

What happened to Newt? I still don’t know. He was riding high but some negative ads took him down. I like Newt and was well aware of his negatives but thought his positives overcame them.

Now, it looks like the Newt people may be switching to Santorum because Iowa caucused at just the right time for him. Santorum is not our best bet to beat Obama.

Someone accused me of sour grapes, but I don’t think so.

Disappointment that Perry didn’t do better, but the Santorum grapes have been sour all along.

This race is so volatile and changeable, I hope Perry stays in. His time may come.

The libs and press will now concentrate on taking down Santorum. Does he have the fight to overcome it?

Maybe, but I’m not seeing it.

I’ve been for Rick Perry all along since he declared.

In other words, he’s dropping out.

It will depend on his big supporters. If the money is still there, he will continue to South Carolina. More power to him.

That’s the big problem with Perry supporters, they spent so much time spinning nonsensical BS it only made their guy that much more unappealing.

One of their other fantastic spin jobs was to claim Perry’s “Oops” moment as a calculated move to make him look more human, a really really sad display of fan girlishness.

If Perry had been consistently polling in the top three, I think his big donors would shrug off this loss and pour more money on the campaign, but the fact is, he's been polling in single digits for six months now.

I don't see anything that would give his big donors hope that he'll do better down the road.

I don’t see a path forward for him in this race. I hope that his 10% along with Bachmanns’ 5% coalesce around Santorum and the most conservative in the race who just showed that with a little more help, Mitt can be beaten.

Unless those big donors think that moving south would give him an edge with the southerners since he is one. But I could be wrong. We will know soon.

Apparently, sooner than we expected. Tweets now coming out of the Perry camp about him "heading to the Palmetto state."

Good luck, Rick. You're gonna need it.

Me? (laugh)I didn’t say anything to you or any others in the time leading up to Iowa, that I can recall. However, if I did, it was in reaction to some of the nasty comments coming from you and other Perry-bashers!

You shouldn’t be so smug, because your candidate could go down too, what will you do then? And no, no matter how tempting it would be, I wouldn’t rub it in your face, like some of you bashers are doing to the Perry supporters. That would really be rude, wouldn’t it, hmmm?

Besides, there are reports now which state Perry’s not going to leave the race just yet! So maybe your smug “I told you so” attitude is a little premature?
Think about it.

This is yet another case where the moderator has moved the story over to breaking news far later than the actual release of the story.

Usually when this happens, there is at least great confusion over _when_ an event happened, or if a _repeat_ of an event has happened.

However, in this case, the effect is worse than that. Since the Perry campaign is reevaluating his apparent drop-out, the posting of the story now to breaking news creates a completely false picture of what the current situation to be.

I humbly provide this friendly feedback to the Mod gods: if a story is worthy of breaking news status, put it up on the sidebar when posted, not days later.

If you’ll notice the info about him heading to SC was posted earlier.

I think this was done just to stir up a flame war.
The Paultards and the santorum crowd along with the rest of the establishment want Perry out and will stoop to any lengths to get him out.

Well in some ways you are right. Perry is back in. I told you I would vote for any of them but Romney and Paul. Does that sound like someone who would not vote for Perry. I would. I just prefer Santorum. You prefer Perry. Not much difference according to some around here.
