On Christmas Day, 18-year-old Sarah McKinley lost her husband to lung cancer, leaving her the sole caregiver to their three-month-old son.
On New Years Eve, the Oklahoma mother proved she was anything but defenceless after she shot and killed an intruder breaking into her home.
Two men tried breaking into Ms McKinleys house, one armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. While on the phone with 911, the young mother shot and killed one of the intruders with a 12-gauge shotgun after he passed the threshold.
After her husbands funeral the previous week, a man named Justin Martin stopped by Ms McKinleys house, claiming he was a neighbour and only wanted to introduce himself.
Ms McKinley, 18, was suspicious. She said he was calling late at night, when it was pitch black outside.
Martin returned on New Years Eve, this time in the middle of the day and armed with a hunting knife and an accomplice a man identified as 29-year-old Dustin Stewart.
The new mother told KOCO News that the men started knocking aggressively on her door, Martin in front and Stewart in the back.
She described to the Oklahoma station what she did: I walked over and got the 12-gague, went in the bedroom and got the pistol, put the bottle in his mouth, and then I called 911.
She also barricaded the front door with a sofa.
Ms McKinley asked the 911 dispatcher what to do should the two men break in.
Ive got two guns in my hand is it okay to shoot him if he comes in the door? she said.
Im in here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?
Once the 911 dispatcher confirmed with the young mother that her doors were indeed locked,

The British must be surprised she greeted them with a gun. In Old Blighty, the fair play would be considered for her to greet them with another 12-inch hunting knife.
Good for her. Don’t even want to imagine what they would have done had they been successful in entering. Shudder.
Oh, and it was unclear in the article, but just a warning about having any personal information published when a loved one dies. It’s not unheard of for criminals to watch the obituaries and then rob the home of the deceased during the funeral. In this case, anything published about the husband’s death would let criminals know the mother was now home alone.
She should have sat in the living room waiting and shot both..
dead men tell no tales.. and never sue you..
Define that for me, I used to know what that meant. Knew a guy once who thought it was a great idea. He's dead now so I can't ask him.
You may be correct, from what I have heard. After all, there were two who were trying to enter the house, and two inside. Even odds, and since one of those outside had a 12 inch knife, then those inside could have a 12 inch knife. I think they call that a "proportional response".
American jurisprudence took a different turn when a U.S. Supreme court decision said that: Detached reflection cannot be demanded in the face of an upturned knife.
In American cases, juries are to look at what the defendant knew at the time, and how they perceived the situation. They are to determine if what the defendant did was "reasonable" from that perspective.
This whole story is kind of strange. She was married at 16 to a man in his 50s... this other guy was stalking her when she was 16... and his accomplice, what about him? I mean, who says “Yeah, okay” to a man who is on his way to rape and perhaps murder some girl and needs a little help?
What a horrible experience for this young widow and mother to go through at a time like this in her life. This is a brave and resourceful young woman. God bless her and her baby.
“This whole story is kind of strange.... I mean, who says Yeah, okay to a man who is on his way to rape and perhaps murder some girl and needs a little help?”
Did you READ THE ARTICLE?
The apparently thought she still had her dead husband’s prescription pain meds.
Two of her dogs had just died mysteriously.
Read the whole article, very carefully..THEN comment. Sheesh.
nice looking german shepherd in that one pic. and she said two other dogs had been killed recently.
I didn’t read the Daily Mail story but I remain curious about one thing: how old was her husband? I have never heard of a young person dying of lung cancer. Was this one of those December-May marriages?
Another report referenced in the comments would seem to indicate these two were the depths of slime — they thought since her husband died of cancer the week before there’d be some bodacious prescription drugs in the place. Evil freaks.
Oh, now I look at the posts and see #8 (the guy was in his 50s).
That doesn’t explain why he was stalking her two years ago. And why not simply wait till no one was home?
He was in his 50s.
By the way, that pain meds information is in the comments below, not in the article itself, so why don't you make sure of your facts before you pop off, eh?
Ol’ Chubby is gonna get a name around prison. He’ll be easy pickin. Kind of that Ned Beatty look from Deliverance.
The Daily Mail story has pictures of her husband in his 20’s, but quote the Sheriff as saying that the husband was in his 50’s.
Good. The second perp charged with felony murder. This is a good law that needs to be prosecuted more. You’re involved in a crime where a death occurs, you are charged with causing it
I read the whole article TWICE and watched BOTH videos...I didn’t see anything about them coming for left over pain meds? Did I miss something?
I read another article that said breeding German Shepards is her source of income.
There’s a guy at my door. Ive got some dogs that keep coming up missing. This guys up to no good. My husband just passed away. Im here by myself with my infant baby.
If Obutmunch and Scolder got what they want gals like this would be sitting ducks for scum like this. Killed her dogs too boot.
Ha! Yup. Not to mention his PARENTS turned him in!
Kind of strange is an understatement. Good for her killing the perp, but who let her marry at 16 to a man 3 times her age? When did the relationship start, 15? She was being stalked when she was 14 by the guy she just killed?
This is a great gun story with a very creepy backstory.
I gather that the stalking and the marriage both took place when she was 16. I’m also a little surprised that she’s giving interviews, posing with the gun, that sort of thing. I know someone is going to pounce on me now with a string of personal insults (that’s what FR is like anymore) but I’m not criticising her for shooting the guy. Heck, I wish she’d gotten the other guy too. But yes... it’s strange.
When my dad died, we asked a neighbor to stay in the house during the funeral. A man rang the front door and apologized for stopping at the wrong house when our neighbor answered the door.
18 year old handled herself like a pro. God bless her and the little baby. I hope others are prepared to protect themselves and family as this woman was.
I know that's what the article said, BUT, there's a picture shown, and it's entitled Husband, and that guy is 20 to 25, in my opinion. I know that the picture could be 25 years old, but I doubt if it is.
Sounds like she was well prepared by someone who cared.
True. Wish others would do the same. One less creep society has to worry about. Could have been two but that nitwit will be a burden to the taxpayers of OK.
Loved this from the comments section/p
The same should go for the UK. Here in Thailand I live up a mountain with no neighbours. When I asked the local police chief about shooting burglars he simply told me to shoot them, drag them inside the house and give the gun to my wife. Justice Thai style not the lefty, liberal hand wringing justice you have back in the UK

Drummie, you gotta check out the full article & vids at the link. Great story, tho I feel for this lady who’s already experienced so much hardship in her young life.
Widowed at 18 on Christmas Day, home-invaded a week later on New Year’s Day, and has the presence of mind to plug a bottle in the wee baby’s mouth before dialing 911 with guns at hand. Shoots the invader, who flops dead on the couch she’s dragged over as a barricade to the door.
When seconds count...
I’m not going to jump on you, I’m going to agree with you. More than a little strange . . .
“but just a warning about having any personal information published when a loved one dies”
So true. And with the internet they can find your address by only having your name. And the obit usually tells the time and place of the memorial when the home will be vacant, so the thieves know where and when it is good to go.
It happened to my wife’s brother place. He was a great guy,1st Cav RVN, and died in a motorcycle wreck. He was also a master mechanic and had a great array of tools that were stolen from his shop in the break in.
Such a shame. But as they say, when the gardener dies, the garden dies.
Agreed ! Good for the young lady ! I do love it when a story like this one has a happy ending ie the perp is DRT.
The young lady did just fine . She & her infant son are ok, 1 dirtbag is KIA the other is charged with murder & the community is going to keep a close eye on anybody that goes snooping around from now on.
