KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.
"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.
Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

“Any of you youngins reading this, keep working and paying, I’m a greedy old coot.”
I’m already working overtime in the coal mine.
If you are aware that SS was a Ponzi scheme, is broke, there is no money and you still want to maintain the status quo then you are supporting a socialist program. If you are OK with that then fine. It is wealth redistribution plain and simple.
If he said the opposite, the Santorum bashers on here would be whining "This is an example why he's NOT a fiscal conservative. Newt is sooooooooo much better on cutting government!!"
HA!
Good luck on that.
That was a thoughtless post.
You are 40 and you know you won’t get benefits.
I think most people agree the system is not working and should be phased out.
PHASED OUT. Don’t you get it? People in their 70’s and 80’s were taught to depend on this.
Lives would be ruined if social security was cut or dropped now for people already on it or getting there.
You sound like a hard case, but good luck with your life.
I hope you don’t have any aging parents. They may have to move in with you.
What part do you think I didn’t read? I was basically agreeing with you. Wait and see where the truth is. No I don’t believe a lying liberal, unless he’s found to be telling the truth on a rare occasion.
Get out of attack mode when someone agrees with you.
Do you realize that Santorum has no intention of reducing the benefits of 75 and 80 year olds? Try reading the entire story for goodness sakes.
And you, my friend, are a jerk.
And if you agree with Santorum on immediate changes to benefits currently being received by the elderly, you have no idea of the chaos that would be created.
I’ve said I’m all for phasing it out, protecting those who are on it now and about to be but for those under 55 there should be changes.
If you support Santorum on this, you are in a deluded minority.
My point is that it’s a well known Obsma troll at the AP another daily source of Obama media lies , hit pieces and drive by bs but all
These posters automatically post like the hit piece
Is the gospel and most know it’s the usual overblown lies from
A democrat party operatives.
“When you attack or accuse an individual, you are not dealing with the issue at hand, just merely trying to put the other person on the defensive.”
Review your posts.
I hadn’t thought of that. :)
But we all agree it’s the sound bites and headlines that matter.
A girl can dream.
I’ve never expected to receive a dime from Social Security.
I am in my 40s. I did not vote SSI in. I was forced to pay. Do I expect to see SS? No. But you tell my 70 year old mother who depends on SS that her benefits are going to be cut, she is NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR YOU.
In case you missed that... If you tell my 70 year old mother her SS benefits are going to be cut, SHE IS NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR YOU.
That sweetie, is just how she rolls.
This is why our country is doomed, right here.
Fact, the politicians stole the money. Our parents generation was too focused on themselves to pay attention and now many of them expect my kids to pay more so they can enjoy the rewards the same politicians promised them. Our generation is doing nothing to change it because of what you wrote.... it’s political death.
My grandma took care of her mother. My mom takes care of my grandma. I will take care of my mom. My Aunt took care of her sister who had no kids. It works in much of the world but it’s too inconvenient for us... it’s just easier to make our kids pay for it!
Government pushed entitlements on a willing populace just like a drug dealer pushes dope onto the weak. We are all addicted now, comrade.
One politician talks says the truth and look at the response of many “conservatives” on this forum. Sad.
Well said!
Okay, I went back and read the story carefully.
I don’t like what he said at all. He was murky on details and shouldn’t have said anything at all until he’d thought more seriously about his plan.
He was for cutting benefits and for means testing. The whole deal with social security as it was sold to us was that it was retirement we were paying for and belonged to us.
There would never be means testing.
They also said that the fund would be kept separate and sacred.
“They” lied about a lot of things.
Now, as it read it, Santorum is advocating means testing and reduction in current benefits.
He’ll probably come out tomorrow and say he was misunderstood and it was all a joke, hahahaha.
But he’s now moved into last place in my estimation when, before he was Number 2.
“Do the evil capitalists hold you down and shove statins and aspirin down your throat?”
Not mine, my FRiend, but they do that to many unsuspecting patients, and not just seniors. Statins are bad, period...cholesterol is not a disease. That is just one of may examples of gross malfeasance on the part of allopathic medicine...
And btw, aspirin is not a bad thing...the malfeasors would shove Tylenol down your throat...one of the leading causes of destroyed livers...hope you prefer aspirin... :)
Thanks
It’s like Ground hog day every time the Obama media
Need to destroy anyone else from preventing Useful idiot Mittens from losing badly to their Dear Marxist Leader .
Thanks. Santorum has moved into last place for me both for what he proposes and for being stupid enough to propose it now.

Wasn’t it just yesterday we were reading how Santorum was a “Big Government, Compassionate, Conservative”?. And now an article on how he wants to throw old people out on the streets /sarc.
God help us if Obamacare doesn’t get repealed.
Just how conservative are these people complaining about what Santorum said?
Unbelievable that he would choose this to ignite his campaign. Ignite as in crash and burn...
and some of us self-employed fools paid the full amount - meaning both the non-existent employer contribution and our own.
Now, because of the humongeous health care premiums we once paid, we couldn’t save enough, so now are up the creek. No paddles remain.
We would really appreciate a check for all we have paid in, with reasonable interest, and please consider all the losses incurred by the ever-shifting tax laws which consumed our savings when the “rules” changed.
Anyone remember when they did away with the law that let us income average for the good years vs the lean years?)
We have been screweled by our congress and administration for far more years than we care to think about, and when we try to explain the late 70s/early 80s to our adult children, they get that thousand yard stare, like the old-folks are whining again.
What the heck, I can’t even get across the concept of the fiat dollar to them.
It seems that they are doomed to have to learn it all on their own, the hard way. And, then 4 generations later, there will be a reprise of the same old sad refrain.
My only advice is to get out of your 401k/IRA/stocks, etc, and grab some real money while it is still cheap. That doesn’t mean fiat dollars/computer bank entries, my friends - but silver and gold coins, or bullion. Not paper, but the real deal, in your own possession.
Even though we are presently too poor to take these precautions, and need all our savings for meeting the “assisted living” bills, you might be in a better position to protect yourselves, your children, and your grandchildren against the oncoming devastation.
Again, do your own research, and be aware of the dangers of the market gimmicks out there. Not all that glitters, etc.

Calling SS an entitlement really pisses me off. Working for thirty plus years and contributing my hard earned money....it Burns me using that word.
I’m not for hanging him, but I’m not voting for him.
Not that it will matter. By the time it ever gets to Texas my vote won’t matter.
I’m for Perry who outlined a sensible plan, but if Perry doesn’t make it, I’m switching to Gingrich.
We’ll save you a seat.
Amen!
The FR SSI is mine don’t touch it crowd might be happier if they went over to the DU. They’d be missed but what the hack go with your own kind.
I want your money and I want it now.
Ring the doorbell loud (I’m a little deaf in the older years) and bring cash.
I don’t trust no banks or nothin’
The posts here just confirm what I’ve been saying for years about why nothing will ever change in Washington.
Everybody wants to cut spending and pork EXCEPT for their own pet programs.
It's a Ponzi scheme. Intellectually you know this is true but you are in denial. You are not alone. Reality is bitch and sometimes it is ok to delude yourself. The problem is when people delude themselves on a public web site.
You get 6.4% of my money every month.
Social security is not a ‘pet program.’
It’s a system instituted by the government and forced on us.
A large percentage of senior citizens depend on their social security for basic living.
Perhaps it should have been changed years ago, but it wasn’t. You saw what happened to George W. Bush when he tried social security reform.
People are amenable to reform now and it can happen if a sensible, compassionate (sorry about the word—I know it offends some of you) plan is proposed.

"I'm old.....Gimme Gimme Gimme!"
Your kids have no claims on it.
Are you for real?
My kids have no claim on what - oppressive taxation on their future earnings? Have you noticed that “we” are 16 Trillion in debt? Contrary to popular belief and some of what I am reading on here the SSI Trust Fund does not exists in a vacuum or lockbox. It’s a guarantee by the same government that is 16 Trillion dollars in debt that grows more each passing day. It all comes from the same government and same printing press.
There is no trust fund! There is nothing... it’s a ponzi scheme that is administered by fools. Don’t worry though, I expect our politicians to completely destroy our currency and economy to honor their promises to cut those checks to you.
Well, that’s not enough. Do you know how much peanut butter costs now? And I have a 103 pound dog who likes food.
I want ten percent of your money and I want it now.
Screw our grandkids, let’s party!
Perry also said the pensions 65 or near 65 year olds would not be affected in his plan.
The BEST thing he said was all countries now receiving foreign aid would start again at Zero in his administration.
THAT’S what we need to cut.
Look at the BILLIONS Omuslim has poured down Islamic sh*tholes.
You work, pay into it, yes you should be able to benefit from it. I have never looked at SS as an entitlement as long as one works and pays into it.
I had high hopes for Santorum, but in this case I'm afraid he wanted to show that he can make the tough and painful decisions, instead showed that he can make the easy and dumb decisions.
As has already been said, and as has been the subject of previous threads, Medicaid and Medicare are greater future liabilities than SS.
And what sort of painful cuts does Rick plan for those, or for Section 8 housing, or food stamps and welfare? Guess he hasn't thought that far.
well, I’m not that old.
And by the way, that’s kind of an insult, but I guess you don’t care.
BTW: I just donated a small amount to the Sanatorum campaign, $100.00.
