Mark Steyn: Politics trumps Left's empathy
The Orange County Register ^ | January 6, 2012 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 01/07/2012 1:23:05 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Lest you doubt that we're headed for the most vicious election year in memory, consider the determined effort, within 10 minutes of his triumph in Iowa, to weirdify Rick Santorum. Discussing the surging senator on Fox News, Alan Colmes mused on some of the "crazy things" he's said and done.

Santorum has certainly said and done many crazy things, as have most members of America's political class, but the "crazy thing" Colmes chose to focus on was Santorum's "taking his two-hour-old baby when it died right after childbirth home," whereupon he "played with it." My National Review colleague Rich Lowry rightly slapped down Alan on air, and Colmes subsequently apologized, though not before Mrs. Santorum had been reduced to tears by his remarks. Undeterred, Eugene Robinson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist, doubled down on stupid and insisted that Deadbabygate demonstrated how Santorum is "not a little weird, he's really weird."

The short life of Gabriel Santorum would seem a curious priority for political discourse at a time when the Brokest Nation in History is hurtling toward its rendezvous with destiny. But needs must, and victory by any means necessary. In 2008, the Left gleefully mocked Sarah Palin's live baby. It was only a matter of time before they moved on to a dead one.

Not many of us will ever know what it's like to have a child who lives only a few hours. That alone should occasion a certain modesty about presuming to know what are "weird" and unweird reactions to such an event...

I work in the funeral industry, in Pennsylvania in fact, I can say definitively that Santorum’s actions are not out of the ordinary. I can't fathom losing a child shortly after they are born and I can say I will never judge a person based on how they responded to this situation.

How does he write at that level consistently?

I am only partially embarrassed to say that I need to read Mark Steyn's columns at about half of my normal reading speed and that I usually have to check an online dictionary at least once with every column. Not even counting the new words I invariably learn, I find that taking the time to fully understanding whatever he is saying is always worthwhile.

Colmes is unbearable - always has been.

A few months ago I had enough of BOR - interrupting, etc. etc. He’s not allowed on the TV in the room I happen to be in, even as spouse may have him on in another room - - -

Never understand why he has guests with a story or opinion, or POV - and CONstantly interrupts.
Does he want US to hear their story, or what???

I know he doesn’t want anyone to get away with ANYthing (’Spin’), but he doesn’t wait a DECENT amount of time before he’s all over them.
Even the folks more or less on his side!

Or someone like Mary Catherine Hamm - rarely lets her finish a whole thought. I swear - one of these times she’s going to bash him one, tell him off, and quit - I can see it!
He didn’t do right by Michelle Malkin ages ago (don’t really know the whole story . . it didn’t have anything to do with interrupting . . ?
He didn’t defend her over something, think it was).

I sort of don’t understand why people bother to go on his show, knowing they’ll get in tiny bits of talk, but I guess it’s prestige.

What is LOUsy for the TV audience is that we can’t understand when 2 people talk at the same time.
I can, when it’s me and another, talking face to face, but conversation is hideous to try and understand over TV and radio when 2 or more people talk ‘on top’of each other.

What would the 'empathic left' prefer? That Santorum and his wife leave the dead baby at the hospital to be 'disposed' of? Maybe thrown in an OR waste can? Baby in waste can - now that's NOT weird by liberal standards...

My experience is liberals 'empathize' with themselves and fellow liberals. And act like that's special. It's as if we bragged about our great understanding and 'feeling' for a fellow gun owner. How much effort does that take?

If liberals knew how dreadful they looked to the rest of us, they would crawl back under their rocks.

When parents have to face the loss of their child who dies before and at birth, it is one of the most heart wrenching things on earth. Those who try to pretend it never existed are the ones who often have the most long terms problems. I get aggravated by Colmes many times, but I never would have imagined that he would stoop this low and be this cruel.

This is a profoundly touching article.
I was moved to tears as
Steyn compared the private actions of Santorum and his wife to the hateful public comments by Combs and Robinson and the “acceptable behavior” of abortionists.

Santorum doesn’t apologize to the left. The left apologizes to Santorum!

A close relative of mine had to deliver a dead baby. Alan Colmes and Eugene Robinson don’t know squat. I hope they never have to go thru it. But this is deeply sick and corroding nastiness in each of them. Revenge, if you will, from a left furious that the final victory over the Constitution, which they thought they had in 2008, will likely be delayed for a bit.

“He is great on paper just horrible when he fill in for Rush.”

****

Agreed. Same problem on TV. Steyn filled in for someone on either Fox News or Fox Business Channel the other night and it was dreadful. Great writer. Poor radio and TV presence.

“I am only partially embarrassed to say that I need to read Mark Steyn’s columns at about half of my normal reading speed and that I usually have to check an online dictionary at least once with every column.”

So glad to hear that. I usually reread several sentences over and over again until the light bulb comes on. His writing skills are much better than my comprehending skills. Wish I hadn’t attended public school.

IMHO, Steyn is a close second behind Rush. I didn't start out thinking that way, but he eventually won me over.

Brilliant and very funny. Unlike the other substitutes, I look forward to Steyn guest-hosting.
