It was the tea party the Obamas just couldnt resist.
A White House Alice in Wonderland costume ball put on by Johnny Depp and Hollywood director Tim Burton proved to be a Mad-as-a-Hatter idea that was never made public for fear of a political backlash during hard economic times, according to a new tell-all.
The Obamas, by New York Times correspondent Jodi Kantor, tells of the first Halloween party the first couple feted at the White House in 2009. It was so over the top that Star Wars creator George Lucas sent the original Chewbacca to mingle with invited guests.
The book reveals: any official announcement of the glittering affair coming at a time when Tea Party activists and voters furious over the lagging economy, 10-percent unemployment rate, bank bailouts and Obamas health-care plan were staging protests quickly vanished down the rabbit hole.
However, the White House made certain that more humble Halloween festivities earlier that day for thousands of Washington-area schoolkids were well reported by the press corps.
Then the Obamas went inside, where an invitation-only affair for children of military personnel and White House administrators unfolded in the East Room.
Tim Burton decorated (WH Dining Room) in his signature creepy-comic style. His film version was about to be released, and he had turned the room into the Mad Hatters tea party, with a long table set with antique-looking linens, enormous stuffed animals in chairs, and tiered serving plates with treats like bone-shaped meringue cookies, reports the book, which The Post purchased at a Manhattan bookstore.
Fruit punch was served in blood vials at the bar. Burtons own Mad Hatter, the actor Johnny Depp, presided over the scene in full costume, standing up on a table to welcome everyone in character.

At the rate we’re going, somebody needs to start a website for pictures of Obama looking at things.
I just saw this on Fox News Sunday.
And the denigrate the Tea Party??????
But it’s okay to have a ‘tea party’ of their own, right?
How dare they? Pompous arrogance on parade. And now we know. I see a few really good protest signs and banners coming.
I’m surprised - Moochelle should have dressed as the Queen of Hearts..
But they'll use the story now....?
What one has to think about is the austerity of callousness. think about where you would have to operate in your mind to do this. The world is falling apart and you are having an orgy on the peoples dime. Time to act ....
Somebody please post a picture of the Zer0 in his ‘Alice’ costume.
THey’re selling books for their friends.
History repeats itself over and over... some are too self-absorbed to get it.
Roman Empire = United States
Ring any bells?
Why are they content to leak it now?
Anyone else besides me wondering?
FWIW, given the choice of publisher, I don’t think this about book sales.
Some frantic poster is insisting over and over that the kids had tea with with cut out characters.
Me too, this is more of a display of out and out Moral Bankruptcy and Ethical Corruption on behalf of the “Entertainment Industry and News organizations” than anything else which falls in line with an article posted here by Dan Greenfield on the Demise of Hollywood and why. You need not look any further as to why Hollywood is FAILING.
This almost sounds like a fairy tale story, except for the fact that they were making FUN of the Patriots in the TEA PARTY!!
Amen....I loathe the entire family AND administration.
It was best to bring the story out now....rather than wait until October (before the election)...makes perfect sense.
Were George Stephanopoulos the pres corps there dressed as a Tweedledum and Tweedledee:
Tweedledum and Tweedledee
Agreed to have a battle;
For Tweedledum said Tweedledee
Had spoiled his nice new rattle.
Just then flew down a monstrous crow,
As black as a tar-barrel;
Which frightened both the heroes so,
They quite forgot their quarrel
Wonder who came dressed as a monstroous crow?
just posted this on my FB page, along with the comment that by my posting it, I hope I’m not labeled as a terrorist. Or, a racist.
