President Obama is putting plans in motion to give the Commerce Department authority to create an Internet ID for all Americans, a White House official told CNET.com.

"The government cannot create that identity infrastructure," Dempsey said. "If it tried to, it wouldn't be trusted."

Schmidt stresses that anonymity will remain on the Internet, saying there's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge."

translation: they've had one for years, now time to use it.

So are we going to be tattooed on our foreheads or right forearm? Would make it easy then we can just be scanned.

Of course, there is nothing stopping anyone from creating another “internet” with an anonymous gateway to the real one :)

Is Howard Dean on his staff?

http://www.zdnet.com/news/howard-deans-smart-id-plan/133953

Fifteen months before Dean said he would seek the presidency, however, the former Vermont governor spoke at a conference in Pittsburgh co-sponsored bysmart-card firm WaveSystems where he called for state drivers' licenses to betransformed into a kind of standardized nationalID card for Americans. Embedding smart cards into uniform IDswas necessary to thwart "cyberterrorism" and identity theft, Deanclaimed. "We must move to smarter license cards that carry securedigital information that can be universally read at vital checkpoints,"Dean said in March 2002, according to a copy of his prepared remarks."Issuing such a card would have little effect on the privacy ofAmericans."

Dean also suggested that computer makers such as Apple Computer, Dell, Gateway and Sony should be required to include an ID card reader in PCs--and Americans would have to insert their uniform IDs into the reader before they could log on. "One state's smart-card driver's license must be identifiable by another state's card reader," Dean said. "It must also be easily commercialized by the private sector and included in all PCs over time--making the Internet safer and more secure."

Details about the “trusted identity” project are remarkably scarce. Last year’s announcement referenced a possible forthcoming smart card or digital certificate that would prove that online users are who they say they are. These digital IDs would be offered to consumers by online vendors for financial transactions.

So what they are saying is you won’t be able to buy or sell without it.

Thank you for shopping at Obama Mart.
