Spring Cleaning Spurs Home Depot To Hire 70,000

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Get those orange aprons ready for the spring cleaning rush. Home Depot announced Thursday it plans to hire 70,000 temporary workers at its U.S. stores to handle its spring selling season, the busiest time of the year for the home improvement chain.
The hiring target is 10,000 more than its announced target a year ago, although at that time it ended up hiring about 70,000 workers. While the jobs are intended to be temporary, Home Depot said that there is a possibility of permanent employment for many of those hired. "About half of The Home Depot's 2011 seasonal hires stayed on in permanent positions," said the company.
Home Depot would not provide a pay range for the positions, saying pay varies depending on the position, the worker's experience and the market where the store is located. The temporary positions are part-time, with the number of hours available to seasonal workers also varying widely.
The spring shopping season at Home Depot (HD, Fortune 500) is like the holiday shopping season for the typical retailer. It starts in mid-February in the warmer states, and by March in the northern parts of the country, and runs through July 4.
As the nation's largest home improvement chain, Home Depot has 1,974 U.S. stores, and more than 300,000 employees worldwide.

At a very dysfunctional electronics recycling branch here in SC, the local manager got tired of people not having pens and other minor things on them at all times.
His idea was to get a bunch of those aprons that HD uses. He was Amish and a great many of the staff were too. The staff called them slave aprons. It lasted about a week. I bought a clip on pouch at Lowes. I wasn’t about to wear one of those insults.
I applied at their site, never heard anything called local store, no response. 70k jobs there???? BS.
Next time show up and talk to the Manager. I know they can hire you on the spot.
That would be about 32 additional hires per Store. A bit hard to believe seeing how many Employees I see standing around in the Chino CA stores as is.

Would it have been too difficult for CNN to just say, “the same number they hired last year”... or just too honest?
So that’s where all the employees from Beaumont CA store went to. I wondered.
As soon as the holiday season passed, the HD in my neighborhood has become a ghost town. Mind you, this a NY store right next to I-84 in a busy area with virtually no serious competition for 15-20 miles in every direction.
But, this is somehow a sign that the economy is better this year than last year.

Here in Seattle, Home Depot pays Washington state minimum wage, which is $9.04/hour.
Target, FedEx, and most seasonal hiring stores pay the same.
At JC Penney, about 75% of the clerks speak accented English.
My employer, an electronics company, has a large temp work force, up to 200 people at times, also about 75% immigrant.
Current pay, $10/hour.
Their biggest complaint (besides bad pay)?
They are forced to work with other people who can’t speak English, so there’s no way they can improve their English language skills.

Maybe the new hires are to tidy up the areas where the illegal invaders gather to steal American jobs.

People realize they’ll never recoup the cost of home improvements at this point; they’ll keep things running, but little more.
American retailers (and banks) seem to have no interest in hiring Americans; they’ve been shut out of the workforce in any field where limited English MIGHT get by.
this makes sense. Turnover is very high and these places give the noobs the crap jobs like cleaning the bathrooms, sweeping the floors and hauling bags of dirt to people’s cars.
My mom works at a Lowes and she said they have to hire five-six people a month to deal with those that just stop coming to work, quit because they have enough money to get an i-pad or who get in trouble for stealing.
