“Bangkok threat: Terrorist’s Swedish connection
Thailand terror suspect married to Swede, believed to have used passport to aid Hezbollah”
Dudi Cohen
Published: 01.15.12, 00:42 / Israel News

SNIPPET: “The suspect detained in Bangkok on suspicion of planning to blow up Israeli targets in Thailand has been identified as 47-year-old Hussein Atris, an Lebanese man holding a Swedish passport.

An examination of the passport, which was obtained by Ynet, revealed that Atris was born in southern Lebanon and married a Swedish woman in 1996. The marriage made him eligible for a Swedish passport, which he allegedly exploited for the benefit of Hezbollah’s terrorism apparatus.”

SNIPPET: “Meanwhile, Thai police were looking for Atris’ accomplice, who is believed to be in his 30s or 40s. Police in Bangkok published the suspect’s composite portrait, which bears great resemblance to Hezbollah operative Naim Haris. The latter’s photo was unusually published last year, by the Shin Bet, which at the time identified him as an operative in charge of recruiting Hezbollah agents worldwide.

Iran is believed to have prepared a broad infrastructure for recruiting agents in Thailand by setting up schools, cultural and religious facilities for the benefit of the country’s Muslim population.”

Was it the Israeli or the US embassy that warned them?

“Huge Cache of Bomb-Making Materials Found in Thailand
Friday’s arrest of a Lebanese suspect in Thailand has led to the discovery of 400 boxes of bomb-making material. Travel warning in force.”

By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
First Publish: 1/16/2012, 10:44 AM

SNIPPET: “Friday’s arrest of a Lebanese suspect in Thailand has led to the discovery of 400 boxes of bomb-making material, and a severe travel warning posted by Israel and the United States remains in force. A second suspect has fled the country.

The intelligence information on the suspects was supplied by Israel, but a Thai intelligence officer previously said he did not understand why Israel suspected the men, who he said did not engage in any terrorist activity in the country.”

SNIPPET: “Thai police on Friday arrested a Lebanese man carrying a Swedish passport, who was linked with Hizbullah, the dominant political force in Lebanon that is financed in part by Iran.

The Lebanese suspect, Atris Hussein, told police where 10 pounds of urea and 10 gallons of liquid ammonium nitrate were being stored. Police said the material was for bombs for attacks outside of Thailand.”

“Hizballah Poised to Strike in Southeast Asia”

By Matthew Levitt
January 18, 2012

SNIPPET: “New discoveries regarding Hizballah bombmaking in Thailand are no surprise given the group’s long history of terrorist operations in Southeast Asia.”

SNIPPET: “Hizballah activity in the region continued into the new millennium, though mirroring the group’s post-September 11 trend of focusing more on logistics than operations in order to stay out of the crosshairs of the global war on terrorism. Even during this period, Hizballah engaged in some operational activity, especially infiltrations into Israel by operatives from Europe and, in one case, Southeast Asia. And the operational hiatus ended in full with the February 2008 assassination of Mughniyah, who had continued to serve as the group’s external operations commander.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise today that Hizballah has the capacity to carry out attacks and engage in logistical support activities in Thailand and elsewhere in the region. Should the need arise, the group is ready to either set contingency operations in motion or procure and move explosives or other materials. With the anniversary of Mughniyah’s assassination just weeks away, U.S. and Israeli authorities are on high alert for the kinds of plots reportedly foiled in places as far afield as Thailand, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Hizballah first demonstrated its ability to operate in Thailand more than two decades ago and has maintained it ever since. What remains to be seen is whether last week’s arrest, like Pandu’s in 1999, will help authorities uncover the local Hizballah cell that Atris Hussein and his escaped accomplice were almost certainly overseeing.

Matthew Levitt is director of The Washington Institute’s Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence. This article draws on research conducted for his forthcoming book Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon’s “Party of God” (Georgetown University Press).”
