Santorum is a social conservative and I admire that although I find him a bit bland but serious and not given to Newt's ego tantrums or Perry and Bachmann's gaffs. He may not be able to defeat Romney but I'm willing to support him in the fight because I do believe that Santorum can defeat Obama. In fact, my neighbors dog could probably defeat Obama at this point. He is a defeat waiting to happen and we don't need to 'lean to the left' to accomplish Obama's defeat. That is the Democrats meme - and it is fallacious. Santorum can beat Romney but only when we stop splitting the vote 4 or 5 ways every primary and actually get behind one candidate even if that candidate isn't the political man of our dreams, as it were. I could still support Gingrich or Perry should they emerge as the ultimate GOP presidential nominee. However, I can't support Romney, Ron Paul or Jon Huntsman. Fortunately, aside from Romney, the other two have little chance to win the GOP nomination. Should Romney end up the Republican presidential nominee, I'll have a tough decision to make, I know. However, Romney can be stopped in South Carolina. If not there, then he is likely going to win the nomination. I don't believe many FReepers want that to happen. This one certainly does not.
Gov. Rick Perry is the one that wouldn’t sell out to the lawyers or teachers. He has the NOW gang targeting him. He’s suing the Feds for the state of Texas and resisting the Energy Department and the EPA. He won the right (in the Supreme Court) to display the 10 Commandments on Texas State Capital grounds. He was the first Texas gov. since WWII to CUT spending. He got photo voter ID. He couldn’t be more solid on Life and marriage. He’s made the state a MAGNET for business and jobs by keeping taxes low, cutting regulations and going out and working to bring business to Texas. He is an Executive’s Executive.
Gov. Perry ran for a 3rd term. The Bush-Rove-Hutchison viewed that as betraying party politics because it had been agreed that Kay Bailey was going to retire from the U.S. Senate and plant her RINO butt in Austin.
Perry won against her primary challenge (was 20 points behind and blew her away by 20 points on election day) by portrayed her accurately as Kay “bail-out” Hutchison.
The Republican Party has never forgiven him and has worked against his election and for Romney in this primary.
You've written a thoughtful post but I must caution, the states that have pushed up their primaries are being heavily punished and their delegates are not something to brag about.
This isn't the time to fold. Santorum is where he is because the "surge" game ended on his lap up the polls, just before the Iowa Caucus vote was taken. THAT is (was) his appeal. He's already dropping in SC.
Economic and social issues are both important and each are linked to the other. There are moral consequences for economic policy just as there are economic consequenses when taking a moral stand against the anti-social policies pushed by the DUmocrats.

This is the plain truth. Too bad some who call themselves conservatives couldn’t throw their support behind Perry; if they had, we’d be looking at a solid conservative who could beat Obama. But they were having too much fun screeching insults.
Of course he has. Just like Sean Hannity hasn't endorsed any one. Or Bill Reilly hasn't endorsed anyone. Or Rush Limbaugh hasn't endorsed anyone. Or Dick Morris or Karl Rove or ....... you name 'em and then you tell me who they've telegraphed that they don't like. I bet you can.

True dat, but then at the time Santorum was a mere asterisk. Besides, just because the Texas bill was veto-proof, that didn't mean Perry had to defend it on its merits to the country and insult those of us who questioned it.
Newt currently has the best chance of defeating Romney. That’s the only quality that matters right now. I’m a Santorum supporter, but because Rick fell flat on his face after Iowa, I’ve given my support to Newt because we’re only a few days away from potentially ceding momentum to Willard Romney the open socialist.
I don’t understand why you people still cling to failing candidates. Don’t you realize that defeating Romney is just as important as defeating Obama? If we make the same mistakes as ‘08, we’ll have the same election results as ‘08 with John McCain v2.0.

It just dawned on me, is the primary similar to the general, in that delegates are there to support who they represent, but actually make their own vote?
Reason for asking is, if Romney were to win a plurality but either Santorum or Gingrich had by the time of the convention already dropped out of the race - could the departing candidate assign their own delegates to the other?
Thereby, resulting in victory for the recipient of the assigned delegates?...
“Fell flat”???? Not only did Santorum most likely win in Iowa, he came in ahead of Newt in New Hampshire. Stop assuming that Newt can win...he’s got too many skeletons the DNC will have a field day with to be even considered as a nominee. His numbers dropped like a stone in Iowa and beyond which should be fair warning of things to come.
What makes them think that the bulk of rank and file conservatives are going to fall in line just because just because a group of “leaders” get together in a meeting and choose someone to support?
