Surprise! Democrats Call for Plastic Bag Tax -- Bill would add $1 to a grocery bill for every five bags --
Democrats in Virginia are often fixated on the gas tax, but sometimes they do come up with other ideas. Like making it more expensive for you to take home groceries.
Del. Joe Morrissey, D-Richmond, and Del. Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon, have put forward a bill that would charge hard working Virginia families 20 cents every time they bring home a bag from the grocery store.
Why? It's not about money, according to Morrissey. No, he just doesn't like the fact that people use plastic bags and he think they should stop.
"The goal is not to raise revenue through this tax but really just to change peoples' habits," Morrissey said.
Never mind the fact that thousands of families recycle their plastic bags already. Or that some Virginia companies actively encourage recycling because used plastic bags are their raw materials. Or that some families actively reuse their bags around the house.
Democrats don't like plastic bags, therefore everyone should pay more for groceries. Does that make sense?
Virginia Democrats: Do it our way, or pay up.
Time to gear up and get busy.
The General Assembly is in session and they’re looking for ways to take more of your money.
First they wanted to save the trees, so they went to plastic. Now they want to save the plastic, then they want to force the use of cotton bags. So we have to wash them and wste the water used to do that.
I wish they would just leave well enough alone.
Most democrats are brain diseased.
Expect to see much more dog crap on your walks.
I hop they plan on using the money to sterilize reusable bags between uses so people will quit getting sick from them.
Reusable bags are expensive, have to be washed between every usage (which means they use more natural resources over their lifetime than plastic), and transfer harmful bacteria to your food.
Plastic bags are cheap, recyclable, and are sanitary.
So, which one are the greenies behind? I swear, sometimes I think the greenies are making the wrong decisions are purpose. Nobody could be wrong this consistently due to pure stupidity.
A conservative thinks it’s dangerous to ride a bike without a helmet, so he wears a helmet.
A liberal thinks it’s dangerous to ride a bike without a helmet, so he tries to pass a law requiring all bike riders to wear a helmet.
They think they are better than the rest of us. They think they are little gods.
I’m not really surprised at this. Personally I prefer the paper bags, they were so useful for many other things once you got them home. And the plastic ones get used for used Cat litter. So it all works out I guess.
Time to go back to paper bags in VA.
Plastic bags were not that great idea to begin with, Wasnt that a ‘save the trees’ idea?
cotton bags. So we have to wash them and wste the water used to do that.
No need for that, that water contains valuable and
nutricious grocery molecules, save it for soups and
stews, or bathe in it, researchers have found that
regularly bathing in grocery water promotes smooth
skin and removes blotchyness.
So grocery stores are supposed to keep track of this and mail the taxes into the government? Idiotic feel-good nonsense.
The moral busy bodies are at it again.
I use paper bags... just doing my part to keep a lumberjack employed....
A liberal thinks its dangerous to ride a bike without a helmet, so he tries to pass a law requiring all bike riders to wear a helmet.
Well said. Personally, I would approve of a tax on plastic bags if our representatives would agree to put them over their heads.
Democrats playing to type: LYING THIEVES!
What bugs me are baggers who only pu a couple of items in a bag. They use twice a many as needed. They are much stronger than most people think.
What sucks about it is that I'm in lose-lose situation. If I don't change my habits, I have to pay an extra tax to the b*stards every time I go shopping. If I do change my habits, then they get their warm and fuzzy "green" feeling and move on to the next way to ruin my life.
Good idea. I can add a stash of plastic bags to my hoard of 100W incandescent light bulbs.
I’m sitting on a veritable fortune....
But just think of all the carbon that is being “trapped” in these bags and prevented from being released into the atmosphere.
Plastic bags are combatting climate change!
Save the plastic bags!
How about the “old bag tax”. You could make a mint off of Helen Thomas.
This dude should move to California, he'd fit right in.
Buy your 100 Watt light bulbs one at a time. With each purchase, insist that the clerk double bag the item using plastic bags. Fill your entire house with nothing but plastic bags and lightbulbs. Then call that show, “Hoarders” and become famous.
Now they want to do away with the plastic grocery bag because the plastic is not biodegradable.
I think what the Environmental Statist really wants is for everyone in the world dead and the plan is to make it so difficult to bring home food that we all give up and starve to death.
LOL, rain forest trees....morons
South Park Rainforest Shmainforest (1999)
Closing caption: "Each year, the Rainforest is responsible for over three thousand deaths from accidents, attacks or illnesses. There are over seven hundred things in the Rainforest that cause cancer. Join the fight now and help stop the Rainforest before it's too late."
Mr Garrison's class hosts a lecture by choir teacher Ms Stevens, who is leading a childrens choir for the cause, “Getting Gay With Kids.” When Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman disrupt the speech, Mr Garrison sends them to the Principal's office, where Mr Mackey decides that a fitting punishment should be for the four of them to join the choir on their upcoming trip to Costa Rica. The only one who does not object is Kenny, who has grown infatuated with one of the girls in the choir named Kelly.
Upon making it to Costa Rica, Cartman (naturally) becomes the most vocal of the kids, putting down the city as well as the residents of the place, much to Ms Stevens’ exasperation.
Before the presentation the next, day Ms Stevens and the kids are treated to a tour of the rainforest, but end up lost when their guide is eaten by a snake. Their attempts to get out are thwarted as they find a group of revolutionaries, large bugs. Cartman finally has enough and wanders off on his own, finding a logging company.
Even though he has hated the trip so far, Cartman and the loggers manage to rescue the others and Ms Stevens, who have been captured by local natives.
By the end of the entire trip, everyone on the choir has grown disenchanted by the rainforest, and at their choir performance, change the lyrics to reflect the need to destroy the rainforest.
Cmon man, you need to invent the 1st 100% cotton dog crap carryall with scooper attachment
Great idea. LOL
They have already started in super-liberal Montgomery county of MD. My nearest Trader Joe’s is in Montgomery county, and they charge 5c for every bag (but they use paper bags).
They should put plastic bags over their heads.
I now shop in Santa Clara.
If San Jose can't trust me with plastic bags, I can't trust them with my tax dollars.
You were not alone. We too always demand paper as the plastic doesn’t break down in the landfill as paper does. It was common knowledge back when the Left, the Environmentalcases pushed to have the plastic bags rather than paper.
The stats about the rainforests back then were so obviously hyped it was ridiculous. I’ve forgotten now what was claimed, but the rainforests would not have existed in a matter of a few months at the rate they claimed.
Environmentalism is just an excuse for lying.
Just under two bits for a plastic grocery bag. It’s a sin tax, dontchaknow.
Another regressive Democrat tax on the poor.
Notice the liberals never mention adding a tax to plastic bags used by newspaper companies on rainy days.
Most paper bags come from recycled cardboard. I especially like the bags from places like Trader Joes that have handles glued onto the paper bag.
However, I also like the plastic ones to line my bathroom and office trash cans.
Bring your own plastic bags you ordered online.
.015 each ;) Now.. if sams or the etailer is required to collect the tax... I don’t know what to tell ya.
They can wear those bags tied completely over their heads!
In fact i prefer they do so.
[They found E Coli inside the reusable bags. If you don’t wash them, they become used Diapers with handles.]
I think i will just buy a roll of Hefty kitchen bags whenever I go shopping and demand at the register they pack my groceries in them, it would be more sanitary.
My local fishwrap has at least 1 plastic bag around every single paper they deliver even though we're having a very serious drought.
I am doing the samething. I refuse to shop anywhere in San Jose if possible. I work in Santa Clara, so I pick up groceries on the way home.
No doubt, eh?
Saw it the other day - they were offering a chance to get 20 bucks if ONLY you used the cotton! And this is in TX. Grrr. I came here to get away from lefty nonsense.
Of course it depends on what you carry in them, but it is true they need to be cleaned.
