Romney campaign tries to trip up Newt Gingrich before the do-or-die South Carolina primary

Mitt Romney’s campaign unleashed a multi-pronged attack against Newt Gingrich Wednesday — a sign the GOP front-runner could be worried about a surge from the ex-Speaker prior to South Carolina’s primary on Saturday.

Romney rolled out a pair of new attack ads and dispatched two of his top surrogates to blast Gingrich’s erratic temperament just days before the make-or-break southern contest.

“He’s not reliable,” former Missouri Senator Jim Talent slammed on a media conference call. “Yes, he can say exciting things — he also says things that undermine the conservative movement.”

That theme was reminiscent of the line of attack that was trotted out by Romney’s team when Gingrich briefly soared to the top of Republican polls in early December — a tactic that sent the former House Speaker’s support into a downward spiral before the Iowa caucus.

Romney’s campaign also put out a pair of negative ads Wednesday — one not-so-subtly titled “Undisciplined,” the other dubbed “Unreliable Leader” — to question Gingrich’s character, trustworthiness and penchant for straying off-message.

“I can only describe his style as leadership by chaos,” Rep. Susan Molinari (R—N.Y.) said on the conference call, echoing her line in one of the ads.

“The focus is always Newt,” she said, “and when the focus is Newt, the Republican Party loses.”

Though Romney continues to enjoy solid leads in the most recent Palmetto State polls, his campaign’s internal tracking numbers show his support there is slipping, according to reports. A Romney spokeswoman, however, denied that her team was suddenly running scared.

Yet Romney’s campaign, which rolled through New Hampshire, has also suffered some self-inflicted wounds. His performance in Monday’s debate was shaky, and he has come under fire for not releasing his income taxes.

More signs?

Now, where are those Romney supporters crying out that this is the not the "nice" Romney, but the "angry" Romney and demanding that he stop running such "ugly" messages against a fellow Republican?

Too bad Romney won’t go after Obama with the same intensity.

All Romney has is the ability to slime and lie about people.

He certainly can’t run on his failure as a governor or his robbery of the US taxpayer with Medicare-stealing Bain Capital.
