Rep. Hinchey won't seek reelection

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.) will not seek reelection next year, his office announced Wednesday.

The ten-term lawmaker plans to formally make the announcement on Thursday in Kingston, New York.

His decision follows his recent treatment for colon cancer and doctors have designated him cancer-free, according to his office.

One of the most liberal members of Congress and a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Hinchey, 73, was first elected to Congress in 1992.

His district is comfortably Democratic but its lines may change when the state completes its redistricting process.

During his first run for Congress in '92, Hinchey advocated for a national health insurance system. He also cosponsored legislation in 2008 to impeach President George W. Bush and was an outspoken critic of that administration. Last year he won reelection by 53 percent.

I wish him a speedy recovery and good health in his retirement.

And I also thank the good Lord he's not going to seek re-election, probably because his district will finally be made so Ithaca is out of that district and someone other than a flaming lib will be able to be elected.

I guess this means the Democrats won't retake the House.

Everytime a Republican retires, the next thing you hear is that the Democrats are going to retake the House.

i imagine that gibson #20 will get much of the eastern part of Hinchey’s #22. Every district grows geographically. This is likely the one to be dismantled.
