Why Does Buffalo Pay for Its Teachers to Have Plastic Surgery?
the Atlantic ^ | January 18, 2012 | Jordan Weissman

In Buffalo, New York, the heart of the American rust-belt, the public school system pays for its teachers to get plastic surgery. Hair removal. Miscrodermabrasian. Liposuction. If you can name the procedure, it's probably covered.

No, I am not exaggerating. And no, this article is not an excuse to make "Hot For Teacher" cracks. When I write that Buffalo's school system pays, I mean it literally. The perk is included as a self-insured rider in its teachers' contract. Therefore, the district has to cover the cost of each nip and tuck itself. There's no co-pay, so the school district ends up footing the entire bill. It estimates the current annual cost at $5.2 million, down from $9 million in 2009.

This in a city where the average teacher makes roughly $52,000 a year. The plastic surgery tab would pay salaries for 100 extra educators.

If Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's legislative assault on public sector workers was a prime example of right-wing excess on the issue of organized labor, the story of Buffalo's teachers and their botox should be looked at as cautionary tale for the left. You see, nobody particularly wants to keep the plastic surgery rider. It's an embarrassing mole everybody agrees should be removed, a vestige of an earlier era that the school board would love to scrap, and that the teacher's union has said it's willing to give up. But because of New York's broken collective bargaining system for government employees, it's survived, ugly and in tact.

For the same reason, Pittsburgh Public Schools pay elementary music teachers +$80,000 for 9 months of employment.

Perhaps their teachers are uglier than anywhere else? Give them a break.

We’re paying for all kinds of nonsense worldwide anyway.

In Wisconsin, the teacher’s union arranged to have the taxpayers buy health insurance for the teachers from an insurance company owned by the union.

At $25,000 per year per employee.

About a year ago, that particular scam ended, and now teacher health insurance is put up for competitive bid.

The company owned by the teacher’s union offered to cut the premiums by about 50% in order to keep the contract.

Because the voters do not have the courage to make a change. They bought off on this crap that teachers are poor victims chained to their desks for 181 days a year...
They have to rehab after plastic surgery during their summer 3 month vacation. Perhaps their union should fight for them to rehab during school and just hire subs...

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The corruption in Erie County and City of Buffalo politics is legendary. Buffalo has so much potential and it's been ruined by decades of incompetence.

Those old hag cougars need to sex it up for the young boys they’re after. With cheerleaders hanging around, the competition is tough. Sheesh. Come on. /s

A neighboring town paid more than that for a kindergarten teacher; she was about 45 years old (imagine what that tab will be when she’s 65), and kindergarten isn’t even required by the state of NJ. Nobody can understand Governor Christie without first looking at the environment in which he was elected. The Asbury Park Press released salaries of NJ public school teachers, and they’ve lost the hearts & minds of the voters. All this nonsense about “underpaid teachers” (progagated by their party’s media) are ridiculous; they are the upper middle class in NJ.

The taxes they inflict have driven many Americans, and the companies they work for, out of the state; soon the gubmint workers will have illegal aliens and the permanent underclass as their only clientele.

Buffalo is a lot like Newark, NJ - much of the morning “rush hour” is school buses.
